How would you ship your dog? Let me Start by clarifying I am talking about 2 full grown dogs over 10 lbs each.I would never ever ship a puppy. My best friend joined the army and is leaving me with her dogs while she does the training and what not, However one day she will want them back and we have no clue if she will be in driving distance. Clearly the best choice would be for them to be carried and supervised the whole flight by me or her but That may not be possible. We looked into pet air and they seem expensive but we are willing to pay for it if that is the best option. Is there an airline that we could have them shipped on that would be safe? What about one that will let them stay in the cabin without us? If the only way to ensure there safety is to take them personally then what is the best airline for that? I am afraid the one dog is too big to go in the cabin he is 12 lbs and tall and thick but He is also old and I'm afraid that cargo would be too much on him. Oh yeah we want to do this privately we don't want the army involved in the transport. Thanks for the advice in advance. |
I've heard of breeders using couriers for puppies. Hopefully someone can come on and give you some suggestions. A courier would fly the pet in the cabin. I would never allow my pet to be in cargo. My neighbors moved from the east coast from the west and their dog was transported by ground. Their dog was large though. Good luck! |
If one of you cannot accompany them- look for a courier. You could even look for someone who is just traveling the route and would be willing to take the dogs with them for a small fee- obviously it is better to use a reliable courier with references but really anyone would be better then sending them under the plane. |
There is a program now that fosters Military families' dogs in private homes while they are on tour. I wonder if they have a program in place to return them to their families once they get state side? There are also truckers wo transport for shelters and rescue...does anyone know if they transport for military families? I would personally be glad to participate in a puppy train for a military family if it was needed. |

Awww Thank you. It will be months before we will need to really worry about how to get them there. I am just the kind of person who MUST be super prepared. Anyone ever use pet air? |
i just wanted to offer the MO branch of the yorkie train if you ever need me just ask! i'd be happy to drive up into IL or IA to pick up and drive across the state of MO with one to it's new home! :D |
as far as i know, you must accompany your pet for the cabin ride and its often one dog per person. Often times they have a limit on how many pets are allowed in the cabin. I dont know where you will need to ship the dogs to, but when my cousin moved from nyc to korea, she took Korean Air and the dog was in the cargo and had no problem. When my mom moved from toronto to korea, she took mickey on Korean air but because he was under 10 lbs (9lbs to be exact :P) he was able to ride in the cabin with my mom. I know there are pet friendly airlines (not necessarily pet specific airlines). I wish you luck! |

Thanks, It is soo nice to see such offers of help. I am looking into couriers but Have not found one for my area yet. I do have several months to look into it though I just HATE to be caught last min at anything. |

Thats smart!!! Maybe post in the breeder area? Or call relocation -- moving companies and they could give you some references. I agree.. I would not ship in cargo. Good luck |

I have a child in the military who decided to move off base and get a dog (despite my advice not to "at this time") - scheduled to go to Afgan' by January - this might be a good idea. Someone in Kentucky (near Ft. Campbell) be interested in 'fostering' her dog?? Now, I haven't talk to my child regarding all this, but I will. |

We decided against it because Poky one of her dogs is elderly and not very nice and tends to stop eating when stressed so we wanted him to be with someone he knew well. Ill find out some more info for you and PM you with it so you have a second option. |
