Spaying at 18weeks I have 3lb female yorkie who will be 18 weeks at the time that I would like to have her spayed. I know it is early for standard spaying, but I was wondering is this okay. I would like to have her spayed at 18 weeks because I will be able to monitor her completely without leaving for work for a few hours or anything. I don't really have an issue with waiting, but I have a spay and neuter contract with her breeder and the next time that I have off will be a month after the allotted time period for me to spay her. She also had her rabies and bordetella this week and the spay would be next week, so I don't know if that would factor into your opinions. She is healthy. She has been sleeping a little more which I think is because of the rabies shot but other than that she is normal with her eating and bowel movements. |
Hi Welcome to YT! I say she is to young...you should wait until she is atleast 6 mos and a good 4 lbs or more...and keep in mind...she will be teething soon and sometimes not all the milk teeth fall out its very common with Yorkies and you will have to have her put under to have them removed...most people wait until around 8 to 9 mos before spaying to see if they have to have baby teeth pulled than you can have both done at the same time. And I'm not sure but I do know my Vet will not put a 3 lb pup under...its very dangerous...I'm sure your breeder will understand and she should have told you about the spaying and milk teeth removed at the same time...it really is best and safer for your pup. Yes, Just wait til she's over 3-4 lbs. Probably about 6 mos old. It doesn't take long for recovery...just a weekend or so. It would probably take longer if it was done earlier because of her being so small. So just wait...you won't need to take off work, but maybe a 1/2 day on a Friday, then you'd have the whole weekend to help her recover. (if you get weekends off) Good Luck... Keep us posted :) |
I would wait until after her growth plates close. If I were in your shoes, I would feel better knowing the pup was done growing before taking a part of her away. |
I'm sure you could contact the breeder since it's only 1 month past the date (I'm assuming 7 months?) and she'd probably be okay with it. That's when I got mine done because we had their teeth pulled then too anyway:D |
You should definitely wait. I would never do it until her permanent teeth had all come in so you could have any retained baby teeth removed at the same time. It's dangerous to have them anesthetized, but I wouldn't want to have it done twice unnecessarily. |
I wanted to double check my contract and it states by 7 months to have her spayed. I think she may have told me about the teeth when I first bought the puppy but I was there for 4 hours talking ;) and I adore her for that, but it was a lot to take in on top of a lot of paperwork to take home. I think I was also freaked out by having a monetary penalty for not getting her spayed in the allotted time since it is considered breach of contract. I haven't talked actually spoken with the breeder about maybe getting it done later. She is a talker and I want to save up a couple of question to warrant our 2+ hour conversations;) Thank you so much your responses |
ok-I guess Many breeders spay them earlier than that AND littler. I am not saying I agree, but it is not unheard of. Good luck and make sure all the blood work is done and that the vet knows the protecol for little ones.:confused::confused: |
I think by 7 months you should be able to see if her teeth have all come in or not. But like everyone else before me said - why put her under anesthesia another time - do both the spaying and, if needed, any teeth removed at the same time. She may not get any bigger than what she is now (all dogs develop differently) so the size doesn't really matter. What does matter, and what is extremely important - is to have bloodwork done on your puppy before you put her under anesthesia. Mine was only 2.7 lbs when he was put under - and he did just fine! |
Yes I would definitely wait, my Oliver just got neutered last week and they informed that 16 of his baby teeth had not yet fallen out and needed to be removed! Thank goodness I had waited because I would not have wanted to put him under anesthesia a 2nd time. I was able to get the teeth removed, neutering done and his microchip put in all at once and he recovered super fast! I would be so worried putting such a tiny, young pup under anesthesia :( Best of luck with your decision and congratulations on your new addition!! :) |
I would say wait... My Khloe was 3.8 pounds at 8 months when we finally spayed her. She was just so tiny at 6 months that I didn't want to put her under anesthesia. I think its fine to wait longer if you have no intact males in your home and she will not be in contact with any. Good luck!! |
I wouldn't spay my little one that young. I was a nervous wreck when I had her done at 8 months. I agree with the others as far as the baby teeth go. |
