Hi Everyone! Good Morning YorkieTalk! Yorkie Newbie here! We have had Teddy for about a week and a half now and he is such a good boy! Doing well with his potty training, etc. The only issue is he loves to dig and bite our carpet and I am constantly pulling pieces of fuzz out of his mouth. Any suggestions on what to do to prevent this from happening? http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/ima...c/progress.gif |
Not let him have run of the house until he's completely house trained. Remember, once they pee on carpet, they will always pee on a carpet. |
Welcome to YT!! :D |
Welcome to YT! Teddy is cute. I would agree with above, make sure he can't get to certain areas of the house. Also, distract him with a toy when he goes to chew on something you don't want him to chew on. |
I can't get the pic to open....but your avatar pic is adorable!!!! Welcome to YT! |
Thanks everyone! We definitely don't let Teddy have the run of the house. We keep him in an x-pen that our breeder recommended when we aren't there and when we are sleeping. When we are playing with him he tries to eat the carpet. We live in New York city so the apartment isn't large. Would you suggest moving the carpet while playing with him? |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk! We are so glad you found Yorkie Talk. I bet your pup is a little darling. He sure is a cutie pie! I'm glad to hear you have him in an x-pen when you can't watch him closely. I would be trying to keep him occupied with toys and reinforcing that chewing on the carpet isn't a good thing. Tell him no, but be careful not to scare him. At least that is what worked for me. Good luck with your baby. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Teddy is a cutie, and you must be having so much fun. Like others have said, provide lots of safe chewing toys for him. Also you can get a spray called "bitter apple" to spay on certain areas of carpet he starts to chew; it tastes yucky so he'll quit. I had to use it on chair legs Meika wanted to chew. |
Welcome to YT. Sounds like you have plenty of great suggestions. Good luck. Teddy is a cutie. |
Thanks everyone! I will definitely try the "bitter apple" spray and reinforce that chewing at the carpet isn't good. He is so playful and such a good doggy...I couldn't be happier :) |
One of the worst things about chewing on carpet, in addition to wrecking the carpet, is if the pup swallows the fibers or strands, they are not digestible and if they don't pass thru can cause a bowel obstruction. There is a similar danger with some of the rope toys too. Good luck. |
