How can you tell what kind of coat they have? This is probably a question that has been answered before, but I could not find and answer that I understand. How can you tell which kind of coat a Yorkie has ? Does it change in texture from when they are puppies to when they are adults? Gizmo is 16 weeks and seems to have really sparse hair compared to some of the other cute little furry guys I have seen pictures of. I don't know how to tell what cottony, wooly, silky or wiry are. I read on here that only certain types will grow long and that some of them matt easily. Gizmo just looks like a porcupine, for lack of a better discription. He has silver sprigs on the roots on the few long hairs he has. His hair just feels like hair to me...I'm lost...Help... |
Many times, yorkies with thin hair will end up being silky. I'm no expert but repeating what I've read and what I've experienced. When Cooper was smaller, I kept trimming his hair as it would grow because if felt like yucky baby hair. After that baby hair was cut out, it was silky as can be. Its growing as slow as molasses though. I'll be patient and reap the benefits later! We're going through the ugly teenage stage but looking forward to all the years of maturity! Lisa |
I have a hard time with this too. I think my Minnie is a silky and Mickies coat seem real thick to me. |
2 Attachment(s) Thank you. Carter is a cutie! Gizmo has really short, fine fuzz in between his sparse real hairs. Is that normal? It doesn't have any silver to it. Here is a picture of him. Thank you again for your help. |
Mickey and Minnie---I love it. They are both beautiful. |
Gizmo is a doll! :) |
A Yorkie's coat texture is partly determined genetically according to the ancestors. The important thing is not so much what kind of shampoo you use (natural like oatmeal is best), but what is most important is not what you put on your Yorkie, but what you put in him/her! Wheat Germ Oil is terrific to help their coats thicken with more body and also promote a healthy shine. I now have a litter of Yorkie pups. Two have the nice silky thick coat, and one has a more sparse lighter weight coat. I am putting the Wheat Germ Oil in the last one's drinking water and in his food. Wheat Germ Oil can be found in the bird section of the pet store in a small container. If you want to order in a larger quaity - I know they can do that too. |
He has a bit of a sensitive tummy and had some trouble with several brands. He is on Nutro Natural Choice Puppy for Sensitive Stomachs and is doing great. I actually have wheat germ oil because I make soaps and bath products. I never would have guessed it could be used that way also. I will give it a try. Hopefully his tummy can handle it. Thanks |
Is Gizmo purebred? He looks like he is mixed with something like a chihuahua or pom.. Did you see his parents? They can be a good indication of his possibilities.. |
Yes, I have papers on him and saw both parents. The mom weighs 3 1/2 lbs and the dad weighs 3. They were both beautiful and both most definately Yorky. So, unless I found a breeder that is good at falsifying docs and showed me the wrong parents, yes he is purebred. |
They say you cant tell with the puppy hair what type of coat your gonna have but was able to with mine. If you can run a brush through it with no matting it is a silk coat. If you feel matts or waviness it is a cotton coat. |
Thank you. I can run both a brush and a comb through it just fine, but he doesn't have much of the long stuff right now so I don't know if it counts! Now, someone thinks he looks like a Chi mix so I am a little worried about my guys hair. :( Rogaine anyone? |
Your little one looks like Maļa my first Yorkie . She never have had a long coat. |
1 Attachment(s) Finally! I have been wanting to the same question answered. Ellie's hair is the same way. |
Yeah...Gizmo has a friend! OMG she could his sister(except she has perkier ears!) How old is Ellie? How much does she weigh? (I know it's rude to ask a lady her weight but just curious) She's adorable. :) What part of Texas are you in---that's weird. |

There was a post on here a few months back about a red legged yorkie I had personally never heard of them and your little guy looks a lot like him. They do look like they are a cross between a yorkie and a chi. Their hair is also kind of wirey and doesn't get very long. The link to the post is listed below. The one I posted of Rudy is post #14. I hope this helps. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...+legged+yorkie |
Mystery solved! Thanks for your help. I asked the lady you were talking about and she agrees that he looks like a red legged one. I had never heard of such a thing. Both of his parents have beautiful long coats--who knew! Oh well, we already knew he was special! Sweaters it is....I'm still looking into Rogaine! |
I realized that the pics in the first thread were from a couple of weeks ago so I took another picture today. I think he is looking a little better. Does anyone else see a difference or am I just hoping he has more hair? I changed his diet right around that time because it was making him sick. Can his diet make that much of a difference? I would love to hear opinions. Anyone know any good "grow hair, grow" dances I could try? |

I just recently got a yorkie puppy and she has really really short hair and it's very wirey. when i've been asked what kind of dog mine is and i tell them a yorkie they are shocked and say she doesnt look it because of her hair and one person said she looked like a chihauhau. i've never seen a yorkie with short hair like my puppy. are there purebred yorkies that have very short hair when they are puppies? |
Buying a Yorkie I live in Atlanta Georgia and I have been wanting a small Silky Yorkie. Every breeder I research either has a terrible reputation or the Adult Yorkies in their collection are just not what you would expect if paying $700 and up! How do I find the puppy I am looking for and know that she will be healthy? I sure would appreciate any advice! |
Hi huge question 3 Attachment(s) Im new to the forum as well to owning my first yorkie baby. My best friend and I both purchased micro teacup yorkies however both look completley diffrent , my puppy which only weighs about 1.5 lbs has thin straight hair which i believe is cotton coat . im really curious to know if she will grow out this type of hair when her adult hair comes in . either way i love my little princess dearly just trying to learn more about her . She already starting to change colors above her head the tan starting to come out around her ears especially. here a pic of miley . The first 2 pics are taken a few days after a bath and the last picture was taken right after i bathed her dryed her>:animal36 what do you guys think ? someone mentioned that she may not be pure breed because of her hair and got me pretty nervous since i payed alot of money for her . |
MileyMommy - Your puppy is a cutie for sure...I am nervous though...there is no such thing as a micro tea cup yorkie. That's a trendy marketing term that a reputable breeder would not use. Did you buy your pup from a breeder who showed you the mother and father? |
To fieldhope: look at Yorkie rescues in your area! A rescue will cost you less and needs a good home :) |
