Need advice asap! I have a 8 week old yorkie male I am trying to litter train him with the secondnature litter and pan. Has anyone else used this to house train your pup I refuse to let him go outside bc I have 2 small children and can't supervise him outdoors and my previous yorki got hit by a car :( so he is not allowed out doors Any tips would be very helpful |
Just wanted to wish you the best of luck. At 8 weeks, it will be tough. I have no experience with housebreaking one this young but hopefully someone can give you some helpful advice. :( Sorry to hear about loosing your previous Yorkie. |
Hi and Welcome to YT. First of all 8 weeks is very young. They should be left with their mom until at least 12 weeks old. We got Zach at 14 weeks and he was also hard to train. This is a yorkie trait that alot of people have problems with. As I said 8 weeks is very young. I use a pee pad for my dogs I never used a litter pan except for my cats. I know somebody on this forum will be able to help you more than I can. I do have a shih tzu that we rescued at 6 weeks old and the pee pad works good with him. I usually put the pee pad right near to where he sleeps and he finally got the idea that when he gets up he's supposed to use the pee pad. He is now 12 weeks old and he's 98% trained. He does have an accident once in awhile but on the whole he's been great. |
I got him 2 weeks ago and at first began putting pee pads near his crate he sleeps in my back bathroom at night he uses the pads when he's in there during the night hours fine during the day i put them in my kitchen in one certain spot and the only time he will use them is when he wakes up from a nap if I bring him streight to the pad I praise him and give him a treat, but if he is just playing in the living room or where ever he's just stops and pees on the floor... Aggravating!!! so will he eventually catch on to that's where he is supposed to go potty? I think I will just continue to use the pads an place them in the box |
Because your yorkie is so young, perhaps it would be better to give him less space to navigate. An x-pen works great when you can't watch him every minute. It also keeps him somewhat safe from the children. Or can you gate him in the kitchen until he understands where he is supposed to go? Then slowly introduce him to other rooms. |

Oh, sweetie...he's just a baby, so he's too young to hold it. They get the urge and they go. He's doing very well to go on the pads in his "room" It's best to have lots of pads around the house so he when he starts to go looking for a place to go they will be easy access. You're on the right track with putting the pads in the liter pan once he's getting better at it. Congratulations on your new baby and Welcome to YT!!!! |

If you are going to indoor train him, I may recommend using a grid system. I have a homemade one which you can find if you look for the post "Grid system" it's under the training forum somewhere, if I get a chance a little later I'll dig it up for you. What you do to start is confine them so that they have a small area, that fits only their bed, food, and grid. They should instinctually go on the grid. As they get better then make the area bigger. What my breeder does is put the grid right in the pen that the momma and babies are in, and most of them learn to go there very quickly, especially since momma already does. When I got Harley at 9 weeks which is still young, but he was already going on the grid 75%. So make sure if you try that you only let them out when you can 100% supervise. I don't recommend letting them run loose in your house until they're quite a bit more reliable. Also any time you see them going on the grid, throw a praise party. so that they know it's the right place. Goodluck. you can most likely use this same method with the litter pan you're talking about, but I'm not familiar at all with it. |
Thank everyone Ima try some of this advice I hate keeping him pined up during the day bc when he cries if breaks my heart but I guess I'm going to have to to get him trained the proper way bc I can't have him using on my floor everytime I turn around |
