New member---Bentley I'm new to this site. I have found it very helpful. Thank you. :) Here is my dilema. Bentley is 11 weeks old and is still very tiny. He is only 1 lb, 11 oz. The potty training is a hit and miss thing, but I know that takes time. Bentley goes into his pen at night fine. It's after maybe 2 hours that the circus begins. Help!! The crying begins, and I mean crying to the point he throws up. I can't handle this. I have been told to let him cry. He will get over it. I can't do that. It seem cruel. He's throwing up. It seems to me that it would be hard on his little tummy. Crying and whinning for awhile I could handle, but this just isn't right. I'm home during the day, but my husband works and needs sleep. I usually end up getting Bentley up and going into the living room, but goodness I need some sleep too. Any suggestions you all have would be great. |
Hi and welcome to YT! congrats on bentley! Throwing up is not normal, I would get that checked out. They sell these toys that are warm and have a heartbeat sound, this may calm him. You do have to let him cry and going into the living room with him is only letting him know if he crys you will go get him. Also, make sure he is tired before going to bed I found this helped Remy sleep better at night. I would play and play with him so he would be tired. Good luck and enjoy your pup! |
Call me old fashion but I would never let my babies cry like that to the point of throwing up. That baby is missing his mom and litter mates and dogs are also social creatures that need their "pack". Buy an expen and wire crate, attach the expen to the front of the crate, cover the crate with a blanket to make it den like and if you have carpet in the bedroom, then place a wood panel under the area he will be walking around on (can make the fence smaller at night in your bedroom and out full during the day in another part of the house) and place a pee pad down along with either a dog water bottle attached to the side of the fence, or a little non-tip pet dish with water and give a toy and baby kong to chew on. Puppies "cat-nap" and need things to occupy them. Also keep in mind that since he's so young, he's going to need a little meal during the night as well. Taking the right care of a puppy will be like taking care of a newborn baby. You will lose some sleep for the first few months, but the rewards are priceless!!! |
I agree Yorkiedaze...I cannot let them cry it out either! My little baby cries if I don't let her in bed with me and I cannot stand to look at her cute little face then just roll over in bed. I swear I can hear what she is thinking, " If my momma sleeps in bed with you then why can't I"? Ok, I have to admit this is the second washing of my sheets this week. I guess I have to get up two times a night instead of one to let her pee. We are going to work on this a little harder...lol. Sorry OP, welcome to Yorkie Talk!!! |
Bentley sleeps in a porta crib. I play with him, but he zonks out about 8-8:30. I can't usually keep him up past then. We go to bed about 10 and watch the news in our room. That doesn't bother him at all. I have had Bentley to the vet. The vet knows about his throwing up and said he is just getting himself worked up. I'm a mom and I am NOT letting him do that anymore. I didn't do it with my children, so this is like a small baby. I don't mind losing a little sleep, but I'm maybe getting 2 hours a night. I need a little more than that.:( |
Welcome to YT!! Is it possible to put Bentley on a cabinet in your room so he can see you at night - this might work until he gets a little older. We had Darwin's crate right next to me on the floor and I would dangle my fingers in front so he could see that I was still around. I agree that getting him tired out before bed is also really helpful - good luck and remember, this stage doesn't last too long - it really does get much better!:) |
help we just adopted a 10 wk Morkie...we have a 2 yr yorkiepoo who slept in her crate till she was a year LOVED her crate..the baby hates the crate and throws such a fuss that she sleeps with us! she cries when I clean her eyes or comb her .she eats every 5 hrs..forget potty..need to work on this |
I gave in with my binky and spent 3 months on the couch and my hubby slept in the recliner because we couldn't see her cry. if she so much as moved I'd jump up and put her on the potty pad and thank god only once she pee'd on me. She was very spoiled her whole life. My new rescue savannah was crated most of her life and the day I brought her home she was in bed with me but she's 4 and potty pad trained. Savannah is like my binky and a cuddler the only thing different is she starts off cuddling close to my head on the big sham pillow and every morning I wake up with her curled in a little ball next to my stomach. This is my 5th yorkie and they just love human contact and if their needs are not met you'll be informed that is for sure. They are also very smart and even though you don't know it they have you in training mode instead of the other way around. |
Awww. He's just missing his Mom and littermates. He's so tiny! I wouldn't want him throwing up very much because he can't afford to lose any weight. Sounds like you've been given a lot of different suggestions that might help. Lucy was in my bed from day 1 because she was so little and I couldn't stand to hear her crying. |
Sweet little Bentley misses his mom and litter brothers and sisters. My Marcie went thru the same thing. I put right beside me in her condo on a level she could see me. And I put a little clock outside her condo for her. I don't know why I did that. Guess I wanted a watch dog. :D Things will get better just give him some time. Do you really sleep?? lol Just kidding. |
Thank you all for the advice. I just love this site. We are going to be working on this. I'm now trying to let take a later nap so that he will play later in the evening. Hopefully that will work. What kind of dog food do you guys feed your little ones? :animal-pa |
Marcie your funny:D:D No I really didn't get any sleep....;) |
