Walking on a leash I just bought a 2 yr old male yorkie named Harley, when I take him out to walk to relieve hisself he doesn't want to walk where i want him to, when I go to walk he just sits and I have to literally pull him. If i just stand there he will eventually start walking and he is walking me. I am using a regular six inch leash.Help please... |
I went through the same thing with Storm so I called the breeder and she said he was never leashed because she has a big yard so I had to train him to walk on the leash. I'm not sure how long you have had your Yorkie but it took Storm about 3 weeks to really walk with us and even to this day he will not lead the walk he always walk behind us and go to explore once I stop walking. |

Please put a harness on him to walk him. Yorkies should always have a harness:) When I am able to walk Beamer he likes to stop and sniff everywhere it seems (and naturally he has to leave his "mark" everywhere he stops) |

Sorry about the incident with Storm. I do have collars on Beamer and Lil Bit - for identification if they ever get out of the yard - but I only walk them or let someone walk them with their harnesses on and the leash is attached to the ring on the harness. |
Not to mention yorkies are susceptible to collapsed trachea's...and using a leash that attaches to the neck can be very damaging. Using a harness eliminates that danger. BOTH of the yorkies me and my sister adopted were walked with leashes that attached to the collar..and BOTH of them have collapsed trachea's. :( The only thing I can tell you is just keep working with him...if he's 2 and never been on a leash he's not going to understand how it works right away...once you have his 'harness' on him...just pull slightly and as he moves let up on the leash...if he stops tug again..but as soon as you get him moving release the tension again...if you keep working with him...eventually he'll learn to walk "with you". All dogs need to be trained to walk with leashes...so don't get discouraged...but keep working with him. He'll get the idea... |
Im having the same problem, Nia dont walk on a leash, I put it on her and she just lay there and put her head down ??? |
I found out it is better to let them go where they want to go during the adjustment time . Later on , you will be able to have very good walk with him . |
Try just putting his harness and leash on in the house, and letting him drag it around just to get used to the feeling of having it on. Then start leading him around inside and then move outdoors. Isn't it funny how when they sit down they go from 5lbs to 50, lol! |
Or you could try using a harness type vest that might be more comfortable for him that he could wear during the day and get used to. Then when you bring out the leash to attach to it he'll know its time to go out and you can treat him. When Oliver was a puppy walking him was such a task because all he wanted to do was chew on the leash and play haha. I finally used a ball outside to allow him to chase that while on the leash to revert his attention to something else. When I could get him to run on the leash while chasing the ball he eventually would take walks. Just a thought, best of luck!! :p |
