Ears................. Help!! Does anyone have any advice for getting ears to stand?? My pup is almost 11 weeks old, and I have had his ears shaved and taped for a while, but when I take the tape down they flop. I am kind of worried because his Mom's ears don't stand, and although his Dad's did, they were quite large. I know he will be cute regardless, but I would like them to stand. I will keep trying for 6 months, for that is what I have heard. Any suggestions out there??:aimeeyork |
Rizzo's ears didn't stand up until he was about 16-18 weeks. When I brought him home one flopped and the other stood, and after two weeks I figured that was how it would be. The morning after I decided he'd be a 1/2 floppy pup his ear stood and it has stayed up since. All I did was keep them well shaved and still do. Just be patient and keep on them, I'm sure they'll get up there. Oh, and I think someone has posted something about them needing additional calcium due to teething, so maybe add a little bit of plain yogurt into his diet? |
Piper's ears didn't stand until she was I think 5 months old. As far as taping, something the breeder did for my GSD (that I also did for Piper) was after you tape the two ears, tape the ears together, almost like a handle. I'm not sure if this is the proper thing to do, but it worked for Piper. Here is a link that shows kind of what I mean- Google Image Result for http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/matteroner/2010-09-18_160857_ear-tape3.jpg |
1 Attachment(s) You have to tape them up as shown in link that Poochieheaven has posted...and leave them up for 3 days so make sure you tape them good so he can't get it off....than take the tape off for 1 day, if after that one day they are not stand retape for another 3 days, if they are standing leave them alone until they fall. I had to tape Harley's ears up and it took almost a month for them to stay up and he has kinda big ears for a yorkie :D hope he grows into them LOL...you just have to be consistent with the taping and shave the hair off the whole ear weekly to keep the weight off, the hair grows back quickly so don't worry :p Harley is 5 months now and its been atleast 6 weeks since I last taped them. Here is a link to help you Jon-An's Yorkshire Terriers (How to train Yorkies ears to stand) |
We got Nicco at 12 weeks and he had one floppy ear. We taped them the first 2 or 3 days, per the instructions on Jon-an's website. He hated it and it came off several times. I think he got sick of it because about day 4 they were both up when we woke up in the morning. It was like he said, "Alright already. I'll keep it up if you promise not to put that pesky tape on again." I've heard the stress from changing to a new home and teething can both cause the ears to drop. He's a little young for teething. Did you just get him? If one is up and one is down, maybe he is still adjusting. |
My Charlies ears dont stand, he is 3 yrs old now sometimes he can make just 1 stand up, when he does that we believe he is flipping us off because he only seems to do it when he is mad at us LOL I had never thought of taping them but they are pretty big ears he would look awful funny :) |
I'm glad to see this post. I've noticed that one of Buddy's ears is a flopper. Both of them will stand, but I see that while one is very straight and tall, the other one sometimes is up and then it flops. I wondered about this, but now I see it is what it is. Don't know if you can teach him to keep it upright. He is 1yr 4 mo. old. Either way it's perfectly fine with me. |

My Yorkies ears were flopped down when I got him at 12 weeks. The breeder had been shaving them I guess and he trimmed them up before I took him home. I did nothing more to them and they just stood on their own when he was about 5 months old. I really didn't think they would and I guess I really didn't care if they did because he looked so cute with them flopped down. I will say now that I am glad they stand up because it really makes him look like a true Yorkie. |
Usually by 6 months if they haven't lifted..they probably won't..when they teeth one or both ears can droop...but should usually perk back up... In some yorkies no amount of taping or shaving will get the ears to stand up. And from all the information I've read.... by the time they are a year..or much earlier..the cartilage has set...and it's too late to get droopy ears to stand up. |
I would also recommend making sure he is getting a high quality and nutritious food. That made the difference with my Molly, when I took her off of the Iams and switched her food her ears stood about a week later. |
I know someone on here that got her dogs ears to stand from shaving and taping and the dog was 2 yrs old. She didnt think it was possible but she tried anyway and got them up and showed us before and after pictures. Im just telling you this so you dont give up hope. Your dog is young one of mine didnt stand untill 12 weeks so you are right there. Your dog is teething and that can affect the ears right now. Another thing Ive heard you can do to help is massage the ears and give cottage cheese. Some think the calcium helps I dont know if it does but Im telling you everything Ive heard. Good luck and dont give up |
By the way I think floppy ears are adorable but I understand you want them to stand |
