Do you renew your HomeAgain membership every year?
 
HomeAgain is reminding me that my annual membership is due...I'm debating on whether or not to renew it and get the "extras" that come with annual renewal. What do you think about this?
Do you renew your annual membership every year, or just stick with having your dog's basic information in the database?

Home again is one of the companies that registers microchips in pets.

I've always renewed mine but I've started to wonder if it's needed. :confused: All I really need is for them to have my contact info if one of my munchkins ever gets lost.

I have not seen anywhere on my forms where they needed annual fees, nor have I been contacted. I've never heard of this. You need to contact the Vet. who microchipped.

My vet told me it wasn't needed really, and that she didn't do it for her pets. The initial fee gets your info in the database forever.

really so you dont have to renew with them, I thought you had to for them to keep your information current. I mean I didnt know otherwise, I just thought you had to. I have been renewing each year but if I dont have to that would be nice.

I did call Home Again to ask about the annual fee and they said I can still stay in their system and that the $16.00 is for additional help such as Travel assistants, lost & ASPCA hot line. So you really don't need to pay annual dues if you don't want.

Yes, I was going to write that I thought that was what it included...I thought I remembered something also about them automatically contacting or sending posters to all area vets and shelters if your pet is reported as lost...I don't know if that is something that is included if you don't pay for the annual membership...I didn't find that I could get really clear answers on their site.

Well, I can attest to it working without having to pay the dues. I'm just glad that it was my keys that got lost and not my Kaji. I keep the yellow tag on my key chain in case Kaji ever gets lost, I have it handy with his id # and the number for home again. I can report it right away. Well, I dropped my keys at the park in the grass. I thought I was doomed! A very honest person picked up my keys and called Home Again. They called me and told me where I could find my keys. I was so happy!!! :)

I just did Bijou's renewal a few days ago. I thought it covered the poster and notifications too....does it? I get emails often for missing pets in my area so I want Bijou's picture in as many faces as possible to get her back. My great pyrenees is chipped too, but Barley was neutered when we got him, so he hasn't had a need to be put to sleep for anything. I can't stand the thought of that big needle poking him. It will be on the list though if he ever needs his teeth cleaned.

I called and went ahead an paid $16.99 each, for the full service membership for each of the girls. I also bought the round silver and pink tag with their microchip # on it because the rubber yellow ones are terribly worn. She said to keep the rabies tag on them too because if they do get away from me and are picked up by the ASPCA or turned in to them, I could be slapped with a big fine. She said that with the chip tag on them it will deter anyone from wanting to steal them. Now I'm really torn. I don't like them wearing collars or harnesses all the time. Maybe if I can find a soft stretchy collar. Any ideas?

Hummmm I wonder if this is just a CA law...is it a law? Having to wear their rabies tag that is. When I bought our city license I asked the clerk if I had to wear them on them because I don't like the look, noise or the damage they do to their cute name tags. She told me I didn't have to, but we weren't talking about rabies tags so now I'm wondering too. On the collar you have to wear, I'd say wear a cat break away collar if you have to wear one all the time. Laws came be so frustrating. Sorry

I've never renewed. I do have the vet scan their chips once a year to be sure they are still working properly, but I don't use any of the extras that you receive when you pay the annual fee.

I leave my two in their step through halters all the time except at night. I know some use breakaway collars.

I am not sure which one mine is. I'll have to look at paperwork when I get home.

I was at the vet once and someone brought a lab in that they found wondering a very busy street. They scanned him and he was chipped. Called the owner , this dog had been missing for about 4 months. And where the dog went missing and where he was found someone had to have taken him there. The owner told the girl at the vet the kids prayed eveynight he would come home. One thing that caught me was the owner said I can't come right now I am waiting on the cable guy to show up. I was thinking if that was my dog the heck with the cable, I'd probably gotten a ticket trying to get there.

I take my collars and harness off as soon as we come in from outside. I have no tags on them cause I am right with them and they stay inside, fenced in yard and never alone in yard. Jack is chipped, Josie not yet. I work and am gone for about 9 hours and just don't feel good about leaving them home alone with collar or harness.

Neither, it varies per city across the US-not a CA law. It it is a city ordinance that varies throughout each state across the US, check with your local the police department or animal control (try dog licensing requirements)...if you live outside city limits, rest assured most counties have a county law governing it and thus you would need to check your county law to see if it applies.

The laws usually specify that the tags must be worn when the dog is in public...not in your own yard, in your own house etc...just for example when walking your dog on the public side walk...

That's what I do with Kaji. I can claim that someone is with him all day, everyday, but I think that he could still slip out. I do call him Super Secret Ninja Yorkie for a reason. God forbid he's ever out without any form of ID that might bring him back to me. So, Kaji wears a cat break away collar.

I also don't put the Home Again yellow tag on him because I'm afraid someone will call and try to change his information without me knowing. I'm so paranoid! That's why I carry the yellow tag on my keys.

No one but you can change his information because if your in their system, you should have a password to be able to enter the portal. If I were you I would give them a call and find out about your status.

It's still me on the contact info. I lost my keys fairly recently and they called my cell phone from their archives. :) But, what has me paranoid, and I admit it's my own paranoia that is fueling this decision, is an article where a found/stolen dog had her chip info changed and the true owners could do nothing about it. All the finders had was the # of the chip company and the ID from the chip that is printed on the tag and they were able to change it. I'd rather Kaji not have that information on him in plain sight. If he is found by honest people, a quick scan will show he has a loving momma somewhere. That is if his collar has fallen off and they have no other way to id him.

You can also have them tattooed or DNA Profiled. I had the DNA profile done on mine. Another safty measure. I don't know how anyone can change the chip # though. Have you talked about this with the Vet. or the company your baby's chip came from?

Im registered with AKC CAR only 1 time fee. I have never had to use it thank goodness

My girls are microchipped and the one time fee will allow us to update our info forever in their database. My girls do not wear the tag with their microchip number on it. I am also paranoid.

For collars, we use break away cat collars. If I am home, they do not wear them. Only when we leave. The only thing on them is a name tag with their name/address/phone number and Please call my Mommy!

For going out, we use break away dog collars. They hold their name tags (same as above) and their rabies tag. If they aren't wearing the rabies tag, you can be fined (here).

On their harness, they have a little bone tag with a special id number and phone number to call another recovery service. This service provides posters and stuff to local (within 50 miles) shelters and vets in the event that one of my girls is lost. The service was $29.99 for 15 years. We use idtag.com if anyone is interested.
