New Yorkie owner needs help Have gotten 3 yr. old spayed yorkie. Took her to vet, she is in relatively good health, ear drops for infection, and drops for dry eye, anal glands drained. The problem is that she smells terribly. I have given her three baths in 7 days and nothing seems to work. Has anyone ever had this problem. I have had dogs (large ones) before and have never had this problem. |
My two just LOVE to "plow" (shoulder to the ground and push with hind legs) through the grass outside. And they frequently don't care (seemingly) just what they plow through ! :( Could that be happening with yours, or are you talking about not being able to "clear" any scent after bathing ? I use several type Shampoos (doggy rated) which have some perfume scent, usually buy from PetSmart. Have a good Day ! :) S.W. |
I"ve been searching the web for a good shampoo.....and came across this one made at home....It might help... The Best Homemade Dog Shampoo I"m going to make it myself for my girls!! :D I included the link in case you wanted to read everyone's comments...but here's the ingredients you need: You only need three things and about three minutes. A container such as a shampoo bottle or other squeeze bottle. CLEAR liquid antibacterial soap. Dial is recommended but I have also used generic. (I read further down and some people recommended DAWN because it's used safely on animals and birds) WHITE vinegar. Mix equal parts vinegar and soap in your container. Shake well. You're done. |
The ears could smell if she has a bad ear infection; but her entire body should not smell after 3 baths! My Lucy does not have any bad 'smell' to her. Hopefully someone else will have more advice. |
maybe... Maybe the ear infection is causing her to smell my standard poodle had an ear infection and he smelt like dirty feet LOl we took him to the vet because the smell would not go away after we bathed him, that's how we found about the ear infection. |
I have a tendency to believe that it might be the ear, because it isn't that she isn't clean. I'm afraid to bathe her too much. Thanks for your input. |
I agree, I think it could be the ears. Yorkies don't have a tendency to smell. They don't have that "dog" smell to them. Having said that, I have one yorkie that always smells like smelly fish, but it's her breath. Have had her teeth cleaned and that has helped, but her teeth are crammed in her mouth, crooked, and it tends to harbor food particles and subsequent bacteria. |

As for the smell... if it's her skin, and she feels gooey or sticky shortly after a bath, all over, then she could have a yeast infection on her skin. Let your vet see her, but don't bathe her before the vet sees her, let them see her right before you would give her a bath, so they can get a better idea of what's going on. |
Thanks. I have a follow-up on Wed., will do that, if I can stand the odor until then, I can smell it from four feet away. |
In rescue once, we had and I fostered a little girl who was a stray from a puppy mill. She had a skin issue where her skin was sticky and her hair had fallen out and she smelled. She had to be given a bath every day and use special shampoos, creams, lotions perscribed by the vet. The smell did not abate until much later when her hair grew back. I don't know for sure, but I think it may be a puppy mill smell? Here is what I would do: I would have her shaved and see if the smell goes away. Her hair will grow back. I'm surprised the vet did not tell you what was causing the smell. Yes, it could be the ear infection............ |
Her hair seems to be OK, but I am going to check more closely. |
Please post if you find a solution - I am having the same ODOR problem! Just "rescued" a 1yr/3mo old female from a breeder that discovered after her first litter that she was not of breeding quality. That was her excuse for having to get rid of her!!! Ella was obviously not around humans much and is very, very timid. She is beginning to open up with us and we can tell she loves her new home! Although I'm sure anything is better than being outside in a cage by yourself in a kennel of barking dogs. She is going to be hard to potty train but I can deal with that. It's the SMELL I cannot stand. When I took her home I assumed it was just kennel smell - NOT. This is not just doggy odor - it permeates around her in about a 3-4 ft diameter and when you touch her the smell stays on your hands sometimes even after washing with soap. The rest of our family does not mind it so much and tolerates it but I can't!! It is just overwhelming to me. I must breathe through my mouth when I pet her or hold her. She is adorable and needs us to take care of her. But there must be a solution because it sounds like this is not normal Yorkie smell according to other posts. This is the first Yorkie I have had. My sweetheart Abby (mini pin-pom) past away last year after 14 unseperable years. Her breath stunk once in a while and rolled in bad things on our farm a few times but cleaning solved it. With Ella, cleaning is not helping at all! Thank you! |
Well after going to the vet several times. Time a health food pet store, changed her food, trying to eliminate grain, not gone all together, but getting there. Have started using Azmira Yeast & Fungal Detox herbal drops that I give her two drops with apple juice (1/2 t.) three times a day. She has improved greatly, and I am determined to get this problem taken care of. The vet just wanted us to continually come back trying new shampoo, medications, etc., had it with them. So far I think we are smelling at least tolerable. It is a disturbing problem to have, yeast infection or dermititis is my unofficial diagnosis. I have read everything the net has to offer. Let me know if you get any resolve. |
