butt dragging My puppy does the butt drag, why do they do this? after he poos I will take a baby wipe and wash him off but there is never anything there. He is like 9 weeks old now and such a sweetheart altho he is really liking to bite so we are working on teaching him that his play is too rough. Pee pad breaking is hit and miss as he will sometimes use his pads and other times run circles around them but do his business else where. I had to watch him close saturday because he didn't care much for eating but I am thinking the worm medicine the vet gave affected him cause he is back to eating again. He is still on the eukanuba but I have had to add a little soft chicken puppy food to get him to eat it. If I don't add this then he will just sniff the bowl and walk away. I think he is gonna be a picky eater. |
Haha I love the little butt scoot, its always so cute :p The only time Oliver does it is after he poops to wipe his butt, not sure what other reasons they'd have to do it :) |
Scooting can be a sign that the anal glands are full, or parasites are present, or the hair around the anus is bothering the pup. If the glands are not expressed, they can become impacted/infected and rupture. I prefer natural means to express the glands when possible. The poop needs to be firm and large enough to express the glands that are at the opening of the anus. I feed my boys half a teaspoon of baby sweet peas with lunch and dinner for this purpose. Many people use green beans. With either peas or green beans, use the frozen variety, no salt added. Put a few in a bowl, cover with a little water, microwave, and cool with cold water before serving. Chop up the beans in small pieces, or mash the peas. Doesn't take much with a small pup. Too much will cause diarrhea. If your pup's anus is swollen or red and the scooting continues, have your vet check out your pup. |
He is more than likely expressing his anal glands...if there poop isn't hard enough to express it when they poop...than they rub there butts to express the rest. In your other thread you said you were having problems with your pup wolfing down his food, thought you weren't giving him enough food  New here and puppy questions Did your vet give him his shots when you took him in? if so that could be why he isn't eating as much right now...the shots make them sleepy and sometimes up sets there tummies. And did he have worms for your vet to give him worm medicine for? That also could have been why he was wolfing his food down if he has worms and rubbing his butt, but if he didn't have worms I'm wondering why he would give a 8 week old pup worm medicine  |

Wow, this is new to me too. My Kody has done this and I couldn't figure out why - thought he was wiping poo. Will ask my vet about this on my next visit. |
I don't think the anal glands should be messed with unless they "are" impacted. Once you extract them, they will always need extracting. I learned this with a past dog who I use to take to the groomer and they always expressed the anal glands as "routine", and when I quit taking her to the groomers and just groomed at home, I found the anal glands couldn't function on their own. I took her to the Vet. and was told that the glands should not have been expressed unless it was absolutely necessary. Now I have three Yorkies who have never had their anal glands expressed and have never had any problems. Two are six years old and the baby is 4 years old. |

When I got Bella I told my breeder I was gonna have Bella groomed cause hubby and I wanted to let her hair grow and she told me...NOT to let the groomers express her anal at all, it would cause her not to be able to express it herself and I would have to have it done every 2 weeks or so..."if its not broke, don't fix it". So I always tell my groomer no anal squeezing...LOL...its in big bold red letters on hers and Harleys records...and I have never had a problem...but you do have to tell the groomer if not they will do it...they say its routine  but I don't understand if they know it will causes problems for the dog, why do it? |
yes I did say he was wolfing his food down, it was after the vet visit and worming medicine that he would not eat his food. Yes he had signs of worms altho I didn't see any in his poo, his stool is firm so that isn't an issue. He is back to eating hearty now but I am adding in a little chicken for puppy food with the eukanuba food. He will not get any more vaccines til march 2cd. Today we introduced the crate and he is doing well with it. |
Ok learned one more thing on here. I did not know that if you expressed the anal glands they would take care of themselves. I knew with big dogs you usually don't have to do that. I just thought with little ones they needed it. Thank you. |

My Gizzy does the butt scoot to and yes it is so cute. He was just groomed on Saturday and did the but scoot on sunday night so I don't think he has an impacted gland, I just think that sometimes he is scratching back there, cause I keep him pretty clean, I am a baby wipe person as well. I do however have a question about the peas....can someone tell me what the purpose of giving the peas of green beans is pleas. I thank you so very much:confuse2::teethysmi |
