If your Yorkie sleeps in your bed..do worry about falling?

Just wondering after reading the other thread about beds:) If your Yorkie sleeps with you , do you worry he/she might fall off and get hurt? Our bed is up very high off of the ground so if Louie fell out he wouldn't make it. Do you use steps for them to get up or down. Lastly, do they bother you at night and keep you from sleeping?

I worried about my boys jumping and doing damage to their legs, so I put my mattress on the floor. :p

chachi 02-13-2011 02:27 PM

My yorkies are 6 and 11 lbs. Jewels the 6 lb one cant get up on the bed by herself so we have an otomon by it for her. Usually they sleep unless they hear A loud noise then they may bark

If your bed is that high off the floor...I would definitely get stairs or steps so he can get off your bed that way. My bed is high off the floor too...my babies have never fallen off while they were sleeping...but yorkies are fearless and will jump...mine were taught not to jump and wait on me to let them down....until I got stairs for them to use. It's much safer...because inevitably they will try to jump!

And they all have slept with me since they came home... when they were babies...I would wake up to any movement..mostly because I worried they had to go potty...so I would keep a pad nearby to use in emergencies...but they don't keep me awake or up at all...unless they move and aren't snuggling to me....I'll wake up and scoot em back next to me! hehe:D

My bed too is very high up off the floor. We have stairs, that are still too short to reach the top of the bed. Bella has to jump pretty high to get up. Shes a stinker and always jumps down, won't wait for me or use the stairs. Jett is too small, but sleeps with us all the time. I do worry about them falling off, Bella did once as a baby, but only once. She was thankfully fine, shortly there after she learned how to jump off the bed. ( I think I am going to TRY to teach Jett to wait for me to put him down, he does NOT like the edge of the bed and stays close to the center. Thankfully!!! :)

I've never worried about it... but Jackson is a bigger guy. He's 16lbs and jumps on/off furniture with ease. Lol. But a little one might be more worrisome to me.

Perrella 02-13-2011 03:53 PM

Our bed is really high too but Zhoie has slept with us from 5 mos. She doesn't jump off anything, she simply waits to be picked up and put down, lol. We don't have stairs, I'm sure she wouldn't use them...she would just stand and wait.
I don't worry about her in bed, she's a real snuggler and will sleep in as long as I do.

I have 4 that sleep with me. They have all been sleeping with me from the day I brought them home as pups. I have always had stairs and for some lucky reason they used these stairs from the day I brought them home. The youngest Wyatt, was taught by the breeder to climb up and down stairs as a prerequisite for bringing him home. For the most part they all have their special spot to sleep and if for some reason they get "discombobulated" we do not sleep well. There are times when I am sorry I let them all on my bed but we, most nights sleep well. It took a while for them to get use to "me" getting up during the night to use the bathroom but they all now hold their spots and usually don't even wake up.

I usually kept them in a playpen in my bedroom at night until they were potty trained and then let them sleep on the bed. I have a ramp that I train them from day one to use to get up and down.

Lori-M 02-13-2011 04:24 PM

Its good to hear that they are snuggle bugs! I can't wait for Louie to be potty trained then able to come snuggle at night. He is a little stinker right now chewing and excitable but I expect that will fade as he gets older. I'll have to get some stairs for him I suppose. Right now he is fearless and jumped off of the couch before I could get to him. It didn't even phase him one bit but scared his mommy quite a bit.

My bed is very high sleigh bed and I'm always worried ZoE's gonna go on an adventure in the middle of the night. But she'll cry & cry if she's not with me, so having her sleep with me is the only way I get any sleep. She's done great so far. She wakes me up once in the middle of the night to go pee and then goes right back to snuggling until morning.

Lovetodream88 02-13-2011 04:33 PM

Callie dosent sleep in my bed with me she sleeps in a soft doggie house a foot from me because I am terrified of rolling over on to her or hurting her because I move a lot or used to so I feel it is safer for her to have her bed and for me to have mine. But if she is sick or not feeling good I normaly dont sleep good so I put her in the bed with me so I can know how shes doing.

sugarmamma 02-13-2011 04:34 PM

Sugar sleeps cuddled up under my chin....but I have a set of stairs, leading to a chair, leading to my BED for her to jump up on :D

GREAT idea!!! My room and my new house is real small & I wasn't sure I'd have the space for enough steps to reach my bed...but that would solve the problem. Thanks :)

Jinger 02-13-2011 05:41 PM

Our bed is a very high sleigh bed and Zoe is a very bitty little one. When I unmake the bed at night I build a "ramp" for her that she goes up and down--consists of our comforter/spread and different pillows all stacked up stair-step fashion. She does great with it. And nothing beats that sweet little curled-up puppy snuggling! :)

ArmaniMan 02-13-2011 05:51 PM

When Chloe started sleeping with me I bought a new platform bed- it is closer to the ground then my other bed was- I also bought a set of stairs so that she doesn't have to jump at all if she doesn't want to- Armani even uses the stairs now sometimes even though he can jump.

They don't really bother me at night- they get up and down on their own if they need water or to go to the bathroom- otherwise they basically just curl up and go to sleep.

There have been lots of posts on this type of question in the past. One of our friends had a Yorkie that broke his back by falling off a bed, so yes, it needs to be a concern for anyone who does this and has a high bed.

We also use the doggy steps, and our guys always use the steps becuase our bed is high and has a pillow top. The steps lead to a bench, which has a fabric/stuffed covering. We snug a towel over top of the fabric, between the steps and the bed. This serves as a launch pad so our guys can jump up the rest of the way (maybe 18" from there).

There are two things we do to minimize the risks of an accidental fall. One is we line the bottom of the bed with large pillows and a big dog bed. The other is that our guys are ONLY allowed in the middle of the humans. They know that if they try and sleep on the longitudinal ends of the bed outside of us, that we will pick them up and put them back in the middle. They are pretty well trained on that by now, and almost never even try to get outside the valley of the giants. :)

It's so hard when they are pups and cry to be with you at night. We have always been suckers for that. I am sure it is safe for most little dogs if you take the right precautions..

very true....I did forget to say...we ALWAYS put our babies between us...so they aren't near the edge.

Charlies Mamma 02-13-2011 06:06 PM

Our bed is pretty high Charlie would not be able to get up without something to climb on. I have a carrier/crate that the breeder gave me to put him in, that I have at the end of the bed, (he's actually only been in it 1 time) there is a towel over the top so he dont slip he only uses it to get up he just jumps off when he wants down. That does worry me as he gets older they say that the have bone issues from jumping, Charlie weighs about 11 pounds. as far as keeping me awake or not, I cant sleep if hes not there. he ususally curls up in the back of my knees to sleep. if he gets cold he comes to the top and pats me on my face so I can open the covers to let him in. He cracks me up!! :D

bellababy08 02-13-2011 06:10 PM

My 2 sleep right in between Hubby and I :D...I have steps they use to get up and off.

yorkieusa 02-13-2011 06:10 PM

I put my mattresses on the floor until mine was bigger. Now she has stairs, because the bed is a high one and she couldn't get up or down without them. After I put the bed frame back up, I kicked her off the end of the bed one night. I have no idea why she went down there, but she never did again! She wasn't hurt at all, but I almost had a heart attack. She had always slept snuggled up to my neck!

ltret0294 02-13-2011 06:19 PM

Once the light goes out they usually settle in. Zack burrows between our pillows. Zeke in the back of my knees and Zoey between us. Zack and Zoey use the steps by my pillow but Zeke prefers the air borne route. The top of our bed is 18 inches off the floor. Although they are bigger "pups" at 12 1/2, 10 1/2 and 9 lbs I do worry about them on the bed but more when they take the leap off the bed and onto the tiled floor. By the way, Old Zipp likes his own little puppy bed on the floor where there is less of a crowd:D and it is easier for him to hit the pad/s if he has to go potty.

Sandysbabies 02-13-2011 06:46 PM

We sleep with a night light on, so I pretty well know where Dudley and Kayla are all the time. Also, Dudley is good to watch out for us. If we move or roll over, he growls. Its soooo funny. He sounds like a little cat. I put him on one of the pads for his kennel that has the thick edges around it. I worry more about him going to sleep and rolling off the bed than kicking him off. That little edge would be enough to at least help him not to roll completely off. Kayla likes to sleep with her head on my pillow. Dudley is more down at our knees. We bought a sleep number bed a few years ago that is alot lower than our Serta. I don't let any of them on it. One of my schnauzers got hurt bad from trying to jump up on it and had to have surgery. He had to have an orthopedic doctor do the surgery and it was a long time healing. Thats why we bought the other bed. We would get no sleep at all if they were not on the bed with us because they both sit and do this little cry thing to get back on the bed if they happened to get down to go tee tee or something.

Lil Sis 02-13-2011 07:58 PM

We have three fur buts that sleep with us. The boys are bigger and
hop on and off. Some nights in the summer it gets warm and they will hope off and go lay on the tile floor in the bathroom. Remy will sleep on top of my pillow or under the covers at my knees or curled up next to dh. We keep her between us and if we wake up durning the night we check on her !!

The funny part is she does hop off. We have carpet and the bed is not too high.. but sometimes she has a hard time hopping back on. We laugh and call her "wack a mole" .. like the game where the ground hog head pop out and you hit them with a mallot (now that I think of it.. sounds kind of harsh).. becaue all we see is her head as she keeps hopping. if she doent get up on her own she will come to my side of the bed and bark for me.
As to sleep... some nights are good some are not. Bailey snores, and sometimes FARTS!! Sam is ok, Remy moves back and forth between my dh and me (shares the love) They are so orientated to us.. and I love to cuddle.
