Not Eating??
 

Hey everyone I hope everyone is doing great but my 15 week old yorkie is now actually not eating. He has been with us for 2 weeks. we get up at 6 am and let him out and pottie. After that he eats a little bit like 5-6 peices of kibble. then nibbles a little bit through out the day and really doesnt eat a full meal at all. I am very concerned about him. We do give him nutrical and pumpkin and yogurt. but that is really a minimum amount of each. Like the nutrical is a drop on the end of a our finger and that is it. I am wondering if he is ok. we are switching him to blue buffalo kibble for puppies instead of the iams. because he completely stopped eating the iams. so please someone help me and my wife with this issue.

you can try feeding him some rice and yogurt :)

presto loves blue buffalo puppy kibble, we used to feed him royal canin for yorkie puppies but he was scratching a lot. hope it helps

Thats about the age Bailey became real picky - I tried so many different things. I believe that training treats were our problem. Too many treats and not enough interest in the good food. I tried kibble, various canned foods and toppings - nothing worked.

Our solution was smaller training treats and a balanced homemade raw diet. Now, our problem is just the opposite - she's a 5 lb dog in a 6 lb body - lol.

You can try moistening the food with a little organic, low sodium chicken broth or mixing in a tiny bit of chicken baby food. That did the trick with our picky little Bella when she was a wee puppy of 1.5 lbs.

He may actually be eating more than you realize. He has a very small belly so 5 or 6 kibbles at a time nibbling thru the day could be enough for him. Are you free feeding? Do you know exactly how much food is in his bowl at the beginning and end of each day?

If he goes out and does #1&2 every morning I guess I wouldn't worry about it. Yorkies can be finicky eaters. I have one that eats very little and one who's eats like a pig. I would only worry if he isn't going in the morning:)

I've had 3 Yorkie's over the years and find that they can eat only a small few bits of kibble at a time several times a day. One Yorkie would not eat a thing for 3 days when I first got him. After 2 weeks, maybe some pattern has developed that has concerned him and he's off his food til he accomodates to it. I would take up his food and offer it three times a day with some Butter Buds sprinkled lightly on top. Or, mix a small amount with water and microwave it, let smell waft through the room, cool it and offer it. Give him 10-15 minutes to eat and if not, take it up. But if he fails to eat anything by mid-day, take a small amount of soft food and put it on his tongue a few times a day until he begins to eat again. It should keep his blood sugar from getting so low while he is getting his bearings and deciding about his new routine. All of my 3 Yorkie's had some eating issue at the beginning but by a few weeks of the above routine, they would settle in and begin to eat normally. Tibbe, my current Yorkie was VERY picky for his first four weeks and now eats like a little horse! Yorkie's are so sensitive that new surroundings can totally disorient them and they settle in slowly.

My girl isn't much older, and she, too, has had eating issues on and off. Some days, the only way she will eat is if we feed her out of our hand:rolleyes: Some days off the floor, and some days only "snack" food (training treats & BilJack "Little Jacks"). She is so small and thin that I have to just go with her "whim of the day" and enjoy the moment. ;)

Has she had her first Vet check yet? Did they mention her being underweight?

If she has seen a vet and given a clean bill of health; then I would start focusing more on the food.

Lucy is a picky eater as well and was even worse as a puppy. Sometimes we would have to throw her kibble on the fllor and make a game of it; then she would eat. Sometimes she would prefer to eat off a paper plate than her bowl.

She also loves a few canned carrots mixed in with her food from time to time; homemade chicken broth (no spices); and the canned Wellness 99% meat.

LOL because my Jilly was like that at first. She weight 2.2 lbs when I got her at 4 1/2 months and was sooooo painfully thin at first. Turns out she had a bad, sensitive tummy and I had to feed her Science Diet Sensitive food after many vet visits and much money and she did fine and lived to be "an old lady". But she was a very, very picky eater at first. Later, she would eat anything she could sneak behind my back from others but her little tummy couldn't digest it so the Sensitive food diet worked wonders. I would moisten it and microwave it, cool it and feed her and she lapped it right up. Hang in there with your little girl and she will eat and gain her weight eventually. Playing it by ear the way you are works just fine with these little girls.

Good luck with your picky eater. I am dealing with the same thing and it is driving me crazy. Louie is 11.5 weeks old and I gave in to him only wanting Cesar puppy food. Now, he is refusing that. I'm going to try some of the things mentioned here.

We have 5 dogs and they all have picky days which makes me crazy. I think I've tried every dog food on the market. For the first few days they like the food and then they get bored. I just go with the flow. I keep dry food down for them all day and since non of my dogs are underweight I guess they're eating enough.

I hand feed my babies several times a day. Neither one of them are big eaters, and I am always scared they won't get enough if I don't prod them along to eat a little bit. I make a game out of it, and they gobble up many pieces of kibble. (Jett follows the leader with Bella, so itmakes it easier to get our little guy Jett to eat, wants to be like his big sister.)

If he is little he may not need more than 5-10 pieces a few times a day to fill that little belly. I free feed my two (keeping dog food out at all times) just because they don't eat much. He is probably eating more than you think ;)
