Where does your baby sleep at night????

I was wondering....I have a crate and a playpen for Drake and have been keeping him in his crate during the night! The last few nights, he has pooped in it when I get up in the morning! I got up at 3:30 this morning to let him out to do some business, if he needed to, but he had already pooped in it!

I'm assuming it's not normal for them to sleep and/or hold "it" all night....do most of you get up with your little ones during the night? Drake is only 11 weeks old!

My question is....should I put his crate in my bedroom at night, so I can hear him, or should I let him sleep in his playpen, so if he needs to go, he can?

I normally only use the playpen for when I have to leave the house for longer periods of time and can't take him with me! I don't use it hardly at all when I'm at home with him because I want to be in control of the pee'ing and pooping, if that makes sense!

Anyway, if you all could give me your input on the crate or playpen during the night, I would really appreciate it! Thanks in advance! :)

Gucci sleeps next to my bed on her bed. She is 7 months now so she gets up and uses the pee pad if need it. When she was younger she use to sleep in a close hallway with a baby gate that lead to the bathroom where the pee pads was, so she use to get up and use the pee pads. I havent use the crate or playpen so im not of help in that area. Your baby is young so is hard for them to hold the pee old nite so there are going to be accidents.

aimee 02-27-2005 08:48 PM

Tia sleeps in her crate at night, it is on the floor by my side of the bed. It has a see through top so she can see me if she needs to. I do get up with her once during the night, usually, but she's slept through the night for the past few nights - so I'm not sure if that is a thing of the past or what.

She hasn't gone in her crate yet. I put a blanket and the shirt I wore that day in there with her. Before she goes to bed, I take her to the laundry room to go potty then to the crate. I say "night night" and get into bed. She now doesn't cry when it's bed time. As soon as we wake up in the morning it's back to the laundry room for potty time. If she goes on the pad she gets a treat, if not, no treat but still a hug for going in the right area.

I use the playpen for when I go somewhere she can't. Since she doesn't have all of her shots yet, she can't go with me very much - so I'm like you in that area.

I hope this helps you a little - this is what I'm doing anyway :)

Lexi's_Mommy 02-27-2005 08:53 PM

My Princess Lexi sleeps in a huge crate on the side of my bed. She was 12 weeks yesterday and she sleeps through the night with no messes. Has been doing so for almost 2 weeks. I have her bed and a wee wee pad in there for her, but she will not go in her crate. She is also almost potty trained she goes out most of the time and on her wee wee pad the rest of the time, with very few accidents.(knock on wood) :aimeeyork

orinskye 02-27-2005 09:03 PM

toby sleeps with me in my bed, if we leave the ouse we put him in his crate, but he is really good about going on his pads during the night, and this way i dont have to get up at all :D

Weegie sleeps in bed with us at night!!! I know many people do not agree with that but too bad!!! He loves to cuddle!! He's our little cuddle bug!!! He starts out on me when we sleep and then ends up on Ray's head in the morning!!! Its sooooo sweet!!! :animal-sm In the begining, he would wake me up usually around 4:00 am by licking my face when he had to go outside. Such a good boy!!! But now he slleps thru the whole night!!! He is my new alarm clock!!! He wakes me up every day around 7:00 am!!! And we go outside!!! He actually loves his crate during the day!! He knows when I am getting ready to leave!! He rounds up all his toys to put in there!!! But doesn't quite get them in the crate yet!! Working ont that!! And if I am home during the day, and wants to take a nap, he goes into his crate!!!!! :Puppy:

Hercules sleeps in his crate, and he has since we first got him. I tried waking up 2 times in the middle of the night when we first got him (at 10 weeks), but he didn't go at all. So I was like, yeah I'm not going to wake up if he isn't going to do anything! So he has been able to hold it all night.

I would definitely put the crate in your room at night, if it isn't already in a place that you can hear him. Hercules' crate is not in our room because it's very close to our room, we sleep with the door open, and I'm a light sleeper. So if he whines, I'll hear him and take him out. So, assess your sitauation, and make a decision based on that. Good luck! :p

We bought a baby camping bed for ours before the little one came home, on the one end i put the pee pads for her incase she needs it during the night and on the other end i put a cosy little bed for her to sleep in... nice thing with the camping bed is that she cant get out and the big dog cant get to her for a "playtime" during the night... the camping bed is on my side of the bed so that if she needs me or wakes up im right there ... dont need to get out of bed ;) when i go for a shower and get ready she goes in there and i know shes safe!

Esme's Mommy 02-28-2005 02:59 PM

Esme sleeps in her crate by my bed...

Esme sleeps in her crate by my bed at night. She holds it the entire night unless she wakes up when I go to the bathroom! Then carry her out and put her on her pee pad so she can have a chance to go too, (it's only fair). When we first got her, she would cry and scratch to be let out in the middle of the night. We would let her pee on her pee pad and then she would go right back into her crate and go back to sleep.

Esme is older than Drake. We got her when she was 12 weeks old. I think that if his going in his crate is a problem, then you should let him sleep in his playpen until he has a more regular potty schedule. Also, Esme's crate is VERY small and she has a very large stuffed animal in there that takes up space. Maybe his crate is too large. I read that the crate should only be large enough for them to stand and turn around in. Maybe he is going in his crate because he has extra room.

Good Luck!
Ma

Duke's mom 02-28-2005 03:16 PM

Duke sleeps in his crate at night, and he loves it! I have a faux fur lined snuggle sack on top of his crate pad, and he loves to snuggle in there all night long. He looks pretty darn adorable peeking out of his little snuggle sack too.

In fact, Duke loves his crate so much, that in the morning when I let him out to go potty, he usually runs back upstairs to snuggle for a while longer! :p

lilbumbleybees 02-28-2005 04:03 PM

I wish I could be of help! Bouncer sleeps in the bed with me, although when he was a pup he did sleep in his play area with some pee pads b/c he wasn't fully house trained yet. Now he'll jump off the bed and use a pee pad or he'll bark to let me know he needs to go outside to potty. I'd suggestusing a playpen though so that she can use the pee pad.

bettyeanne 02-28-2005 04:22 PM

The Toto sleeps with Patrick and me. We started off on the right foot ... one of her crates sitting on a chest next to our bed with a nightlite where she could see us. She did great! :) And then ... she would lay on our bed with us while we watched TV ... she would fall asleep and we just didn't have the heart to move the little darlin' ... so we began to just let her sleep on our bed ... before we knew it, the little brat took over our bed!! :p We bought the biggest king sized bed we could find and I still find myself hanging onto my side of the bed!!! On the up side ... she has her little booster stool next to the bed and gets down all by herself at night and goes to her wee wee pad!! ;)

Dolce's Mom 02-28-2005 04:52 PM

Dolce sleeps in her playpen with her blanket at one end (although by morning its on the other end) and a wee wee pad on the other end. She has done this since she was about 2 1/2 mths old. I dont know if she actually used the wee wee pad during the night or its her 'morning' thing, but there is sometimes pee on the pad when i go to get her out. The playpen is actually in another room about 6 ft down the hall from my room and I usually listen by the door when i put her to bed so i can see if she is alright. I also leave a little nite-lite on for her so it is not totally dark in there. She has never cried once and she knows when it starts getting light in the room it is time to get up so then she starts crying for me. She is really good about going to bed...my mother gets mad because she says that Dolce has her own ROOM in the house...she even refers to it as "Dolce's bedroom" when people are over...lol :D

dollymix 03-01-2005 03:08 AM

Mitzy sleeps in my bed, beside me :D as well as my son, who climbs in, in the night, and my hubby!
Molly sleeps in the kitchen at the moment, until she is more housetrained, then she will come up with us.
Hubby isnt too impressed, as we are all squashed up

I really enjoy this thread, please keep up with the responses ;)

tfc3rid 03-01-2005 07:49 AM

I agree... This is a great thread... I'm very interested in how everyone deals with sleeping arrangements!

kb_jesee 03-01-2005 09:02 AM

Keena sleeps with me SOMETIMES, but usually they stay in a gated area in our kitchen they are 7 months old. Bella always is in the kitchen, but other than that, we live out in the country and theres no fences and lots of coyotes around here so they are mainly inside unless I take them out on a walk about once a day! :)

Sleeps in a crate

Stomper (funny name for a little yorkie huh?!) sleeps in his crate at night. He is now 12 weeks old. We get up once at 4:30 AM to let him go pottie on the pads. We don't let Stomper eat or drink after 7 PM and always feed him at the same time every day. This helps us monitor when he will go pottie - he pee all day long, but goes poop no more than 3 times. Give that a try...it might help! Make sure you are not giving your puppy too much food. It is not normal for them to pottie on their beds, so he might be eating too much food. :animal-sm Good luck!

LIL MIS' MAGIC 03-01-2005 11:06 AM

Our two little ones sleep in the living room where they choose do that night...it is almost always differnt, they each have separate beds but we let them decide...we have a bed set up on the fireplace with easy access to up and down and they love sleeping there...we usually have to take them once or twice a night to potty, but are trying something new lately...we have read that if you take up their food a hour and 1/2 before bed they tend to sleep the whole night without accident...we are hopefully that this will help all to get more sleep...we don't to the grate or playpen thing...they have the living room and kitchen to play in while I am at school or work (we have a baby gate for the rest of the house)...they are learning to hold it or use their pads while aways...when they we little we did have them in just one area but as they are growning they get more free space....

Bitsy 03-01-2005 08:18 PM

My Sophie must be the naughtiest little puppy on this site!!

She is in a crate at night and when she first came home I put a nice little bed in one end and the wee pad underneath it all with enough area for her to do her business there. Well, the little stinker (literally) would go right in her bed! Yuck! And, she had, um, digestive problems at first, so that was not really very pleasant.

Now I have taken the bed out (got tired of washing it everyday) and just keep the wee pad in there. Once in a while I'll put the bed back, or a blanket, or a t-shirt or something else to see how she does, but more times than not she just poos where she wants too and doesn't care if it is on her bed.

Does anyone else have a Yorkie that does this? She is going to be extremely hard to house train I think. She will go anywhere, even if the wee pad is just as close.

Connie 03-01-2005 09:10 PM

Maddie sleeps in her crate which is in the same room as me. I've let her sleep with me a couple of times, but I am so scared I'll roll over on her during the night and hurt her, that I just feel better with her in her crate and she seems to like it. I just took down the playpen as Maddie has figured out how to jump out of it! LOL In her crate, she only pooped in it the first night she was in there...since then, she sleeps all night with no accidents. My daughter has Maddie's brother and he is a little pill. He wakes my daughter at least twice during the night! She's hoping he'll grow out of that habit!

gyesso 03-01-2005 09:38 PM

Buddy & Jake sleep with me since I am alone very often. Buddy has the foot of the bed and Jake is under the covers next to me. Jake is the baby. When my husband is home they sleep in their room (sometime). When his daughter is here they like to sleep with her. I started them both off in a crate but that didn't last for too long.

Kota 03-01-2005 09:44 PM

Kota has to be between me and my husband. Right up against one of us. and if that isn't enough he likes to be under some of the covers. I think he thinks he's human We also have one of our smaller suitcases up against the bed so he can get up. Or else he just sits there and barks. he is such a kid!

YorkieLover9 03-02-2005 08:53 AM

My yorkie Beau will be 14 weeks old this Sunday, I would love for him to sleep with me (he weighs between 2 - 2 1/2 lbs). I'm not afraid I'll roll over on him as I'm a light sleeper that barely moves, my concern is everytime I put him on my bed and try to get him to lay down and sleep, all he does is wander around the bed sniffing and going to the edge and looking down which scares me as I'm afraid he'll fall off.

How do I get him to settle down and want to curl up with me and stop pacing and sniffing and going to the edge of the bed?

Also, how do I post his pic on here so that when I reply to threads, you guys can see his picture?

Thank you.

kandee 03-02-2005 02:48 PM

Our two sleep in a pair of beds which look like giant slippers, in front of a radiator in the kitchen, but they usually cuddle together in one of them.
(could probably fit another two in there with them as well. :)

schatzie 03-02-2005 04:20 PM

Schatzie as a little puppy began sleeping in her playpen. Then she grew and learned how to escape. Now she shares my pillow and my husband squeezes in where he can, hahahaha

Annabelle is independant so she sleeps usually in the living room or walks into her kennel on her own and sleeps.

Sleeping with Schatzie at night is my favorite "bonding" time with her. We lie there together and she licks my hand as if she's grooming me, ha ha and I talk sweet nothings to her. It's a routine and I love it, wouldn't trade it for the world.

Now, when I adopt my new Yorkie the sleeping arrangements could get interesting. Might have to buy a bigger bed, ahhaha :D

StewiesMom 03-02-2005 04:35 PM

Stinky, ummm I mean Stewie slept the first few nights in the hallway outside our bedroom. He woke me up multiple times and I would check on him. For some STUPID reason I thought that if I just let him sleep with us while he's coughing. Yeah. As you can probably guess, that didn't work out. He slept between us for a while, but I hated it so I moved him between me and the wall. He's such a little bugger. Spoiled.

Bitsy - that is kinda odd about Sophia. I truly always thought that dogs don't poo or pee where they lay?? Well of course unless they have diarrhea and can't hold it or some other medical issue.

But in Sophia's case she kinda just sounds like she doesn't care where she goes. Kinda funny...Ok, I know, not funny. And I sure give you credit washing her bedding every night.

Hopefully there will be other posts with the same situation to give you some insight on this.

Schatzie sends Sophia puppy hugs by the way!
