Baby teeth I'm getting Oliver neutered next Friday and along with the neutering they said they will pull any additional baby teeth that are still intact. Will they fall out on their own eventually or is it imperative I get those pulled? Does anyone have any insight on that? Oliver is worth every penny but it is very expensive so I would like to learn as much as I can about it, thanks!! |
It is common practice to have baby teeth removed at the time of their spay/neuter. If left, some may fall out on their own, or even all of them, but also likely they won't. Keeping the baby teeth in once the adult teeth have come in can cause problems. Just hope that Oliver doesn't have to have 14 pulled, like my Faith did! Good luck with his surgery! |
I'm no expert, but I've been told that yorkies are prone to not shedding all of their baby teeth. That was one of the first things my vet told me when he met Ally or the first time. (I think he is now the primary dentist at our vet.) They are all different though. Ally had 13 baby teeth removed and Tia, only two. They were both done just before they turned 8 months. |
I waited until Remy was a year old to have her spayed. Her first heat came early and I was caught by surprise! The vet said to wait about a month after .. then the holidays hit! So she was a year and she had about 4 baby teeth left. She had double teeth.. it was funny looking to say the least. It is recommend to have the teeth pulled at the time you have the spay/neuter so they don't have to be sedated more than once. The cost is due to the anesthesia so it would be even more costly if you wait to have the teeth pulled or other problem occur due to the baby teeth not coming out. Ha.. play a lot of tug of war with socks, maybe they will all come out on their own.:eek: |
The problem is if you dont go ahead and get them pulled thinking and hoping that they will all fall out they might not and then he has to go under anesthesia again (which is always risky) to get them pulled. |
I always thought it was just the baby canines that were the problem, but it's sounding like that's not the case. Interesting. My two had their baby canines removed at spay/neuter, and I was glad they did. I've seen several Yorkies with double canines. |
