Am I over reacting? I'm used to people admiring my puppy, he is the most adorable good natured little chap so it's only natural that they would :) but today I had an encounter in the pet shop that truely upset me, a woman and her daughter (grown up) came over to us and did the usual "isn't he tiny, isn't he cute, how old is he? What's his name?" thing that 90% of the people who meet him do but then the mother picked him up and asked her daughter to take her photo with him, which she did!! I was dumbstruck! Thats MY dog! WTF!! I took him off her a told her not to do that... Am I over reacting? He's my baby! If someone had done that with my son when he was little I would have knocked them out, I know he's a dog not a child but in my opinion that's the only difference |
I dont mind if people pet but when they pick your dog up without asking they have crossed a line. I dont blame you for being upset there are some very brazen people in this world that only think about them selves |
Being in the food business I run into self-centered idiots everyday, but I think I would have had to control myself from knocking that woman out. No you did not over-react, she over-stepped her bounds. No one in their right mind would pick up a strange dog, not knowing their personality without permission from the owner first. Heck I won't even pet another dog I see without the owner's permission. |
Not in my opinion, she had no right. I don't let people pick up Zhoie, when they get close, I pick her up. And, what is taking a picture all about? Who knows what crazies lurk out there....like try to steal my dog and then use the picture for proof it's theirs. Geez...she takes the cake for sure. |
Whoa! I would definitely have told her to BACK OFF. You are not overreacting! |
I have had people take pictures of remy -- but they have asked permission. I have not always said yes. I don't like people touching any of my dogs without permission.. I am more worried with the brothers (Sammy and Bailey) that they may bite if they get scared -- not that they have ever. Kids bother me most, I don't get parents that let their kids pull and touch dogs, when I am telling them to stop. This would be the parent that would try to sue me if their child was bite. geeezzzz I don't think you over reacted, but always try to say firmly no before you get too upset. I think our dogs are just so cute people don't realize how they come across. If it goes beyond you sating 'no" then knock her out:D |
You are not overreacting at all!!!!! That woman has no boundaries whatsoever. |
You are not over reacting. She should have not picked him up without expressly asking you permission first. |
I would have been super mad too so no, you are not overreacting at all. It isnt her dog, its yours. Goes to show how inconsiderate people can be. I would have flipped! |
People try to pick Thor up every so often. I try to tell myself that they are just ignorant, and I tell them he doesn't like to be picked up. That deflects 95% of picker-uppers, but some people PICK HIM UP ANYWAY!! And then they usually say, "oh, he doesn't seem to mind." One time a pair of college girls were cooing over him, and one of them picked him up. The other one immediately told her that was rude. :p I always thank people for asking if they can pet him or pick him up (though I don't let them pick him up). The other thing I can't stand is when I tell people Thor doesn't like other dogs, and they bring their dog over anyway. |
I would NOT let ANYONE pick up my kids!!!! It's rude that anyone would , but there are tons of them out there! When people DO ASK if they can pick mine up, i say "NO", i say he's a wiggler and a squimer and WOULD jump from your arms, so NO! But thanks for asking:) |
No way what a witch !!!! No , U are right , no one should pick up other people dog's without asking if it is ok. I was once at the airport waiting for a flight and I saw Miley was so upset in her carry on , so I took her out and this man across fr me was talking to his young daughter on his cell and he got so excited. He ask me if he could take a picture of Miley, to he could email it to his daughter on the dog they should get and be able to travel with. And said yes u may, put no one as ever try to pick up one of my babies , I would stop them dead in their track . Some people just dont think , before they act. Good for u to stop her, Too bad your furbaby didn't bite her LOl !!!! bark@ulater !!!! mailey, miley:aimeeyorkmax:aimeeyork |
not over reacting at all. i dont have to worry about this as dexter will bite anyone who tries to pick him up. i know i need to fix his behavious problems, but there have been times where an overbearing person swoops in on him withough asking or even aknowledging me and when he snaps at them, i actually think it might teach them a lesson! |

That's funny! Sophia is such a scaredy cat, most people see her shaking and with her ears back and feel a little sorry for her! Sort of a defense strategy I guess. Silly girl! |

Honestly if I didn't have my dogs I would have said yes your overreacting. Now that I consider my dogs my family is a different story. I would calmly explain to her why you don't approve of that. Or simply say I'm not comfortable with that but you appreciate her nice comments. We need more nice people in this world. |
This has happened to me before. No, you're not over-reacting. You're actually under-reacting because you didn't knock her out :p People are so rude these days...They should have asked beforehand. |
You are not over reacting. What was she thinking?? |
you are not over reacting at all. I don't even let anyone hold mine so she was lucky you let her and should have appreciated that..lol |
UGH, I hate that. I work at PetSmart and while I ask before even petting a dog, I will ALWAYS ask before picking one up!! I have one awesome customer with 3 yorkies and her smallest is just a doll. She always lets me hold him but I also ALWAYS ask first. Rhia gets excited and runs up to people, but flattens herself to the ground when pet. She'll also run back to me if they get too close. Thank goodness, too. I'd flip out if someone just grabbed her without asking. |
Yea she shouldnt have touched him because what if he wouldve bit her then she wouldve tried to sue you. Well dont touch my dog without permission. When I take Nia out in public I hold her because I dont want no one to touch her without my permission. |
No way were you over reacting. I take Poppy to the pet store with me and it bugs me when someone just strolls over and starts stroking her, especially when im holding her which is 90% of the time because she will try and pick toys/treats off the shelves LOL. It is just so rude! people should use their manners and ask if its okay first. But I dont think I could have kept my mouth shut if someone tried to pick her up! I just think that it crossing the line. If someone tried to pick Poppy up she would be scared and wriggle, what if they dropped her because she was wriggling? Nope nobody will be picking Poppy up. Next time tell them straight. :) |
Agreed! People shouldn't touch your dog without permission. I don't mind when we walk Buddy people stopping us to talk about him. That's fine. They can even pet him. But I'd probably take issue if they just bent down and picked him up. |
Good grief! What nerve! No, you are not overreacting. That women has no manners. |
2 Attachment(s) I have had people pet Gypsy without asking and while I am happy they think she is so cute, I wish they would ask. I always ask if I might pet another's person's dog. I do not have a problem with people picking up any of my babies cause dh is usually holding them when we go out. Mainly because of the issue of other people. Someone could easily take one of mine out of my arms due to my lack of strength. Would you try to pet or grab one of these pups? |
your not over reacting.. that would rub me the wrong way too.. what weirdos! |
I also worry when they admire too much. But I would not allow someone I don't know to pick Mia up. I always have worried with the other terriers they might freak and nip someone which happened when one of Jenna's friends decided to put a necklace on Trixie. WAY after I had told them to not touch that Westie. It wasn't the putting on but the pulling back off that caused her to you guessed it nip the girl in the mouth and give her a stud like piercing on the lip. She was very protective and old! Mia has never shown that type of reaction but does not like strangers touching her either. I would have told her to give my child back and she should never grab a dog or child without permission. Not only for their safety but also the animals. |
