Contacting a breeder II Is this common?
 

I got a call from an another local breeder. I don't know if I heard it right since I was at work and couldn't really talk to her. She says that she doesn't sell her puppies to a person who might have to leave a dog more than 4 hrs a day. I probably will bring my future pup to work most of the time, but if I have meetings elsewhere I might not be able to do that. I will also look into dog day care... sometimes.. Anyway... Is that common for breeder to say that they won't sell a dog to someone who might be away for a little bit more than 7 hrs? People who have full time job cannot have a yorkie?????????????????????? oh my goodness!

I think that every breeder is different but I personally think that it is a good thing that they are so concerned about the new home that the puppy will be living in. The lady that I bought mine from I have known forever but she is very particular about where the babies go to. I would not be concerned I just think that she wants to make sure that the baby gets a good home.

Yes, it is very common because yorkies are very dependent and need care 24/7 as puppies and then, since they are so attached and bonded with their owner they need to not be left for long periods of time.

I have loved the breed all of my life but waited until my children were grown, I was self employed and worked from home, and was able to financially give my yorkies the best care before I got one. I convinced many friends to get them over the years but I waited because I researched the needs of the breed. They crave companionship and fail to thrive when left alone and lonely.

If you have another dog or even a cat for company after the yorkie is 6 months old or so then leaving it occasionally for more than 4 hours would be okay because they will have company and companionship.

I think you have met a very caring breeder who wants her yorkies to go to the best homes.

If you are planning on taking yours to work when it is old enough, then you have the ideal situation. If you can use the pet sitter option where someone comes to your home then you are also doing the right thing on the rare occasion when you cannot take her to work with you.

Every breeder I talked to asked me about this but I was looking for a smaller one. They wouldn't even consider selling to someone that was planning on leaving them all day.

Many posters here do work outside the home so maybe they can give you some insight about how they manage it.

A good friend of mine took hers to work with her until she got her second Yorkie.

Different breeders have such different criteria. A breeder I spoke to would not sell to me because I didn't have a yard, another wouldn't because I told her I would be crate training - she did not want that...a lot of people declined me because I had a child. My breeder had concerns but I was able to convince her that I had been training my son for months for impending yorkie ownership.

A lot of breeders do not want their pups left home alone all day. I can understand it, but I also see so many people on YT who's dogs are left alone and I know they are some of the happiest little pups around. Be patient, you will find your doggie soon. Are you actively looking in the wanted section here? Lots of pups available.

My breeders did not ask me if I would be able to stay home with my Babies all day lol. Thats crazy, People have to work.I can understand them not wanting them at home alone all day. but Im sure a lot of people do.

As a breeder I do ask that question. A Yorkie should not be left alone for long periods of time; puppy OR adult. They are very social and LOVE company. If somone has a Yorkie or another toy breed, I may consider it depending...
I work out of the home full time and I pay someone to come and let me dogs out and check on them once a day. So they are alone for 3.5 hrs at most. They are not an only dog, they have eachother to keep themselves company. This is just my opinion which is based on my experience. I just want the best for my puppies and what them to go to a home like mine or better. Nothing less. :)

Yes I think it's very common. Your Breeder want's to make sure her baby is being taken care of. If you tell her you will make sure he/she won't be left alone all day, I'm sure things will work out. People do have to work all day, and I understand that. But Yorkies don't, they need attention all day. And just as you would use child daycare, puppy daycare is a must if you need to be gone all day. I love this Breed so much, and I waited until I could give 100% to it, to find my baby. I really feel the good Breeders do the same. Every Breeder is different, but most all of them want the same thing, a good loving home for their litter. :)
Without GOOD Breeders, we wouldn't have our forever friends. :D

Thanks guys for sharing your experience and opinion. I probably will bring my future dog to work. Our work is very good about dogs. Three colleagues bring their dogs sometimes but not everyday. I am sure I can work things out. Plus I have people who can watch my dogs too.. I was just surprised that she told me that she wouldn't sell the dog to someone who might leave them more than four hours... because I have some friends who leave their dogs when they are at work. But they are really loving pet owners.. When I watch one of them, he usually sleeps most of the time throughout the day.

I really think that I will be a responsible owner as everyone around me suggests me to get a dog everyday. I care about animals very much, and I want to do my best to be a best companion for him/her as he/she will be for me. Since I have no family in the US, I am desperately looking for a companion. People cannot imagine.. how it is.. not to be able to see family for long time (about 5 yrs now)... Anyway.. that is off the topic.. I hope I do not feel like I am a failure if I end up leaving a pup for more than 4 hours for some reasons. I doubt that it will happen often. Anyway I am not looking for a pup because they are just cute...well they are cute. I am taking this seriously and taking time to get ready. I am a little bit scared of being judged as unfit puppy owners for some breeders' yorkies because I love them very much. But then at the same time, I do respect everyone's guideline and people can go to conculsion quickly. I hope breeders will get to know me well when I apply for waiting lists. I am a bit hmmm.

Yes and I think it is a good thing. There are probably far too many of these little doggies left alone for far too many hours. Remember the one in California? that was thinking of selling it because she was hardly ever home? I can't understand why people like that get these little doggies to begin with! :mad:

I also ask about the situation in the home. I do not place puppies in homes where they are left alone for long periods of time everyday. It is important to me that my babies have socialization experiences and interaction with at least one of the new parents during those long hours of the day. as was already said, different breeders have different considerations so if being away all day is a must for you then look til you find a breeder who is in synch with you..

I agree with YorkieShadow's comment. Although I would prefer an environ-ment where the pup/young adult yorkie would have "people" interaction all day long, in some scenarios that can not be possible. Also, just because a person has the ability to be around their pets all day long doesn't necessarily mean that they are going to be a better home. When placing pups I try to look at the total picture on where I would be sending them. :tinyheart
