Please help feed our feathered friends Birds are starving and need help right now with all of the snow cover, so even if you don't usually feed the birds, please consider buying some bird seed and putting some out in a shallow, solid material container. |
Thanks for posting this. It's a shame but you really don't think about the poor birds. I know I have been feeding feral cats that I found in my garbage can. Poor thing was starving. Started out with one and now I have two. Been doing it a couple of months now. I'll have to do the bird food on the other side of the house, away from where I'm feeding the cats. |
Great idea, but be aware that bird feeders are also signals to hawks as possible feeding grounds for themselves... small birds/animals. We used to feed birds years ago, enjoyed it so much, but every winter it also brought in the hawks who sat on the fence & trees motionless for a long time waiting for just the right bird & just the right moment to strike. Just a warning! |
The hawks are around anyway. That is part of the natural order of things. However, if one chose not to feed the birds because of a fear of attracting larger feathered predators, then the birds would still possibly die from starvation. |
I realize that, but they aren't waiting by Roxy's door like they once were. I'm just saying to keep that in mind before you invite the birds up close to your house. Hawks running off with yorkies is also the natural order of things. |
Here, we have alot of land and everything you can think of that comes with it, squirrels, rabbits, birds, etc... But they do not venture out of the woodline because of the owls and hawks. I always go a little ways in or just at the border of it and feed all the "little ones". Go to my mothers in town and there are squirrels, birds, rabbits everywhere. I feel like I am cheated out here! God takes care of the little birds! How much more will He take care of His people, those who live according to the teachings of the Bible? "So do not worry, saying 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?'" HE always provides, even if it means that we are called upon to do so!! |

My point was to help those that are helpless. I shall continue to do so.:) |
The birdies are well fed in my yard. :) We have 16 different cultivars of holly that produce an endless supply of berries. In addition, we have lots of evergreens that are home to bugs that make a nice meal. A water supply is also important. We put water in a plastic pan daily because the water in the birdbath freezes. I agree Karen, the hawks and other birds of prey are already here. |
We keep a suet block up up and sprinkle old bread around, not to mention stale popcorn. however i may go and get some seed just for good measure |

I agree with you both. I live next to a reservoir which holds deer, fox, opossum, red-tailed hawks, eagles, peregrine falcons....you get the idea. I have always fed the birds and other animals in the back portion of my yard. Here in the NE, the put up billboards asking people to remember to do this. In the US, we have many birds that are in crisis due to loss of habitat. Yes, there is a possibility of having these birds of prey in your backyard. However, when my pups are outside...so am I. It might be 20* with a foot of snow..but I am "booted" and "coated" and outside. I have often posted that our country is in the middle of a crisis. Species are being placed on the Governments "endangered and threatened" List at an astronomical rate. The Cahow, the Caracar, Condors , Cranes, Eastern BLuebirds...and on and on! Currently, just today, there are 1241 records of animals on this list. When will we as a species realize that our right to life does not extend into wiping all other species out in the process. Thanks for posting, a great reminder to us all.... |
