Even when you're there with them, a determined predator can get your pet. A good friend of mine was sitting on her patio with her cat right next to her and it was snatched by a coyote while she watched. If you live in an area with predatory birds, I wonder if the safest way to let your dogs run outdoors is to put up a dog run with wire mesh or netting over the top. I'm still looking for a structure I can add to my house that would let Tallulah go outside through a doggy door but protect her from the neighborhood cats and thieves. I've been looking at some of these cages and wonder if I can get someone local to fabricate something out of wrought iron for these prices. http://www.cagesbydesign.com/t-suncatchercat.aspx |
This is SO sad to hear. :( But.. thank you for posting this. My boyfriend and I have been discussing our future house plans and he wanted to put Rhia in the backyard. This is EXACTLY one of my reasons why I would not want to just leave my dog in the backyard. She weighs 7lbs. She'd be no match against a bird of prey or someone trying to snatch her up. |
That is such a horrible story. I'm so sad for the friend and the yorkie. |
So sad to hear this. My niece's Yorkie was snatched up by a hawk in her driveway and ripped apart as she and her 2 kids watched. This was in Los Angeles 4 years ago and they still have nightmares about it. |

Totally agree. We never let the Yorkie out alone, one of us is always with her. Now I would hate to meet the Hawk that could fly away with Carlo! We make sure they go out together, as there are some Coyotes around here. Between us and Carlo, the Yorkie can be assured she will be fine! |

Well where we live there are no real large birds. The only thing we ever see are crows, seagulls and pigeons. I do watch the dogs when they go out back though and we have two big bassets that would rip a bird to pieces. They are very protective of the little ones. |
How very sad! Thanks for posting this as a reminder. I was outside with Calleigh when she was a puppy. A Redtail Hawk was watching her on a low branch close to where we were. It just sat waiting. Then it flew to my neighbors roof and stayed there. I got so nervous I came in the house. I always go out with her on a leash and always check the trees and the sky. One day there were two of them. It is so scary and sad to think of what can happen to these little pups. :( |
that is horrible... I am so sad for that family!! Gee.. between people that would steal, birds of prey, other predators and in Florida Gators if near water.. it is a job to keep our babies Safe!! |
It\'s very sad. I would rather not know what happened. Can you imagine watching it on your camara! She is very devastated.:( |
My kids were telling me about a HUGE owl they saw when my youngest was coming home from school at about 3:30. Then hubby told me yesterday that he saw it on Thurs. He said be very careful with the dogs as the thing had a wingspan as big as our entertainment center. Now I hope he\'s exagerrating but when the kids told me about it, i did some research and the Great Horned Owl is found over most of the US and are big enough to carry off a small dog. I try to be sensible. My dogs are never out with out me but I do allow them outside to play. I wish there was some way to keep the hawks and owls away from our babies. It\'s one of my big fears!:( |
I have been thinking about this all day. Thank you for the reminder. The other evening I saw a large wing spanned bird fly by the window, maybe an owl. I will be thinking twice before letting my little 4 pounder out. I feel so sad for this family, what a loss, that poor baby. <sniff sniff> |
