Will bathing my puppy once a week wash away the Frontline plus??
 

I put frontline plus on TomTom every month and today after i took him to my friend's house i found 1 flea on his body....so Will bathing my puppy once a week wash away the Frontline plus or just frontline plus not working?? I use half dose (0.34ml) on TomTom which was recommend by my vet.

If you wait 3 to 4 days after you apply it to give him a bath, bathing once a week shouldnt wash it away.

[f]You are suposed to be ok with bathing after 2 days of application. I stopped using frontline plus because it really didn't seem to be working. I was pretty upset about that because it's not cheap. I started using vectra. I hate putting any chemical on her at all, but what else can we do?[/font]

I was told by my pek's vet that it would not wash off. That was many years ago because she is now 13 years old.

The advice of waiting about 3 days to bath after using the topical is good.

I alter between frontline and advantage k9... that has helped a lot.

I bathe my 2 dogs before I use Frontline. That way, no worries whether or not it will work as well.

I stopped using Frontline (or any of the topicals) on my dogs after Preston had a bad reaction, they didn't seem to work very well anyway. I now use Comfortis, and it seems to work better. With any flea treatment, you can see fleas, they have to bite your dog to be effected.

I was told to bathe only with Oatmeal shampoo when you are using a topical. My girls hair looks so bad when I use that shampoo.

Funny you asked this 'cause I was just contemplating putting her on Revolution and wondering what I could use to bathe her, she has a bath once a week. Last year I tried everything on the market to no avail. Fleas on her and my house. I went bazerk!!! I want to save what hair I have on my head this year. Already talked to the vet(not about the bathing thing though) but waiting til the puppies quit nursing.

dish soap -- I think palmolive (I know I spell wrong) wil kill the fleas.
they will fall off dead in the bathwater. I don't use it except when we have an outbreak because I am sure it dries out the skin. Also ... borax dusted around the cornors kills fleas. In Miami the fleas never die.. we never have freezes to kill them so it is always flea season.
I was also told you should wait 2 to 3 days AFTER bath to put on the topical. Don't know if that makes sense -- but something about the natural oils in the skin/fur is what spreads out the topical.

20 years ago I was told that Joy dishwashing soap could be used because of the lemon in it would kill fleas. Here in VA, fleas and ticks NEVER die either. We just had 14" of snow a couple of weeks ago and my DH just picked two ticks off of a dog that was left behind by our neighbor(another thread!!! ARGH)

Most topicals do not repel fleas or ticks. They only kill them once they have bitten so you may see a live flea on your dogs from time to time if they have been around another dog with fleas or picked up a hitchhiker from some bushes/long grass. I too use half a tube on Morgan and have never had a problem when using it.

I apply the frontline after a bath, usually at night time so i don't have to worry about touching it. You can apply the frontline right after you have bathed and fully dried your dog. However, you cannot bathe your dog right after you apply the frontline. You must wait 48 hours after applying Frontline to get your dog wet.

Shampoos will not wash the frontline away once it has set in after 48 hours. You can use whatever shampoo you want, it does not have to be oatmeal. Most quality shampoos will say right on the bottle that it is safe to use with topical flea treatments.

If you have an outbreak of fleas you do not need to wash with dish soap. dish soap is very drying to the skin and can cause irritation. It is not needed to kill fleas. Any shampoo can kill fleas. The trick is to apply it to a dry dog, starting at the top of the head (occiput) and working your way to the tail. Then leave the product on for 10 minutes. The soap is what kills the fleas because they cannot breath. If you get your dog wet first the fleas can form a barrier around themselves to protect themselves from the coming soap invasion. They will also crawl into any opening they can to escape (mouth,ears, anus, etc...). Citrus based shampoos are great at killing fleas because they break down the exo-skeleton of the flea thereby suffocating them.

that is good info about applying to a dry dog -- and I am sure it is better on their skin than the dish soap :)

sorry about the 14inches of snow.. I really thought freezing weather kill off a lot of fleas.. guess I was wrong ;( I also read that fleas can be dormant if they don\'t have a food source... is that true?

We only own a little over 10 acres of land, next door also has 10 acres too. We are the only two houses out here, so we are surrounded by 20 acres of woodland. There are plenty of food sources for them boogers out here. I wish they would just become extinct!!!

I use revolution and average a week 1/2 baths . No problems at all. I used to use advantage and switched. I love it.
