Puppy's Ears Our new baby Gidget is almost 11 wks. old and both of her ears stood up from the first time we saw her at 8 wks. At times, I have seen one ear flopped over but then other times, they both stand up. This morning, her left ear is flopped over and I wonder why this happens...has anyone else had this happen? I wondered if the play time with her big sister has been too rough as they bite on each others ears. Any comments on this? :confused: |
She's still young. They can go up and down due to teething. If you want you can shave her ears down so they won't be as heavy. This will help them to stand. Remy's ear's didn't completly stand till he was 4 months old(16 weeks). |
I agree. Both teething and too much hair on the ear can make it flop. Ally's ears were up when I adopted her at 8 wks. About 4 months or so, one started to flop. I took her in to a groomer and she shaved the top 1/3 of each ear and that floppy ear stood up immediately. Tia has thicker hair (soft cotton coat) so her ears are very sensitive to flopping. I have to shave it myself because her hair grows so fast and makes her ears flop down. I don't know if this is true or not, but when I adopted Ally, the breeder told me not to pet her a certain way on her head/ears because it would make them flop. Good luck. I agree with other posters here, teething will effect the standing of the ears. Also as the hair grows it will become heavy and can weigh the ear down. Your pup is still very young so I wouldnt worry too much about it, if they have stood in the past chances are they will stand eventually. |
Thanks everyone for your comments! My biggest concern was the biting of the ears that the girls do when playing. :D They are so cute and the baby is not afraid whatsoever of her big sister. Abby likes to hold a chewie or carrot in her mouth and taunt the baby with it. I can give Gidget another piece and she wants the one in Abby's mouth. Abby may not be doing anything with her piece...just holding it in her mouth to aggravate Gidget. Abby had never played with any other dogs because they are always larger than she. (Abby weighs 3.25 to 3.50 depending on how much she eats.) She really wanted to play and socialize but they always scared her when they pounced on her. Gidget weighed 1.75 oz. the last time she was weighed so we have really enjoyed them playing. They started playing together within 24 hours of Gidget's arrival. :smile::smile::smile: |
