 Just remember that whatever you put on a dog's hair WILL go into his mouth. ALL dogs lick their hair so I wouldnt do it on a yorkie...they are too fragile. Better safe than sorry. WHY is it sooo important to you? I guess i just dont get it. Dont get me wrong, I'm not putting you down...I just dont understand the motive. ;) |
I would not dye my dog.. but as long as the dogs are safe and not harmed and the product used does not hurt the dog I don't see the problem!!!! I have a pet quality pup.. and I think all the grooming and work that goes into show quality dogs is questionable.. but saying that I DON"T REALLY KNOW because I don't have a show dog.. so who am I to judge I can't get the link right now.(at works and you tube is blocked).. but on you tube there is video of dyeing a show dog to make the legs and tail look more gold.. the dog is safe do I would think it is the same thing. If someone else can find it that would be great!! We are all different and we should not be so fast to judge. For example: I am too old for a tattoo -- my generation looked on tattoos as crude. My daughters have tattoos -- they are really cute -- so I adjust and accept!!! |
i love the colour of my yorkies far to much to dye, but the poodles that are dyed for art and show are amazin :D |

I looked up the MSDS sheets on some dyes and on some shampoos, conditioners, sprays, etc. You can find the same cautions on each category. Everything you apply to your skin or your animals skin has the potential to cause a reaction. Be smart about it and do a spot test before you jump in and coat the dog in dye. Just like human hair dye tells you to do (which i'm sure most people don't do). Clothes can too cause pain if the animal is not supervised when wearing them or if the clothes are left on too long. I've seen dogs with broken legs due to a clothing mishap. I've also seen irritated arm pits and inner thighs due to rubbing. And, the most popular problem from clothes is severe matting which can cut off circulation to areas of the skin. Sure it is the mat that is causing the pain, but the clothing caused the mat so it is indirectly causing the pain. anyway, my point is, everything has the potential to cause harm if used improperly. Be safe, read directions, spot test, and watch your pets reaction. If they don't like it, don't do it. |
I have no advice, but do want to say I just don't see the problem. I don't do it because it sounds like work and I would only want it in Ellie's hair for a few hours. If the right product is used, it is no more harmful than using shampoo. It is no different than using clothes or even bows. We style and change their coat everytime they are groomed and products are used on it. I really can't believe this could be considered animal cruelty. |
Personally I would never dye my little girl's hair but I don't see any problem with doing it. I don't dye my own hair but there are many people who do and I don't see anything wrong with it. Why are there people on here that don't like the idea of applying dye to your dog? Just curious? I believe we should apply the same philosophy we use on our fur babies as we do on ourselves. For example, I bet there are members on here that swear by high quality dog food, organic treats, top tier shampoos, brushes, etc...but at the same time are not treating themselves with the same level of respect since they are smoking cigarettes and eating fast food. |
I'm a human. I make the choice to put harmful chemicals in my hair. If I dye Lucy's hair - she doesn't get a choice. I'm sure she would not enjoy any part of that process. I don't always think you can compare what we do as humans to what a dog does. Lucy doesn't work in an office every day and shop at Macy's either. I wouldn't want someone to put dye in my young child's hair against their will; I wouldn't want to subject my little dog to it. A matter of personal preference. Everyone will have their own opinion in this matter and are entitled to same. |

Clothes can be removed if they bother the dog,,,,,,,, dye can't...... :thumbdown:thumbdown:thumbdown:thumbdown:thumbdown :thumbdown |
The products used to maintain coats are no different. The are chemicals and some are spray on. Food dyes are edible. If they can go into the gi tract, I'd hope they could touch the skin! While I can definitely see why this wouldn't be appealing to everyone, I think there are many more things that people could be doing that are much worse. If it causes irritation, the owner will know not to do it again - just like if another hair product causes a reaction. CC has products like Black on Black (or whatever it's called) that help with coloring. No different and handlers use this kind of thing... Ellie would prefer that I don't make her spend extra time in the bathtub to use her totally unnecessary conditioner, but it makes her soft and I like it. She can get over it. :) I also paint her nails and dog friendly nail polish and she is fine. :) |

and I believe it is no more or less silly to dye a dog pink for fun than it is to put a bow in its hair. |
Most of us do things to our dogs that our dogs don't necessarily enjoy. Hopefully we show some restraint, and limit it to top knots, or silly outfits -- and by the way, a good percentage of the world thinks outfits on dogs are awful. Thor prefers to be naked, and while he would be against anything that prolongs his bath, like a dye job, I think he would way rather be some weird color than in a sweater. Dyes of course can be removed by washing the dog several times in a row. Again, we're not talking human hair dyes here. |

this is a youtube video on preparing a yorkie for showing.. they use dye the hair. not stating I am for or against.. but I think the little guy would be happier playing... just saying |
Personally, I wouldn't dye my dogs hair but I really don't see anything wrong with it if done properly. You should post pictures after. I'd love to see them. |
I love my yorkies the way that they are. if i wanted a pink dog i wouldn't have purchased a blue one...but that's me. i think it's kinda cruel to dye a dogs hair personally because knowing how allergic my two are to EVERYTHING i just wouldn't risk something else on their poor fragile skin and i also think it's very silly and not neccessary but those are just my opinions. |
I'm on a neighborhood business committee and all the businesses in the 4 business districts do an annual "Girls' Day Out" shopping thing. Businesses are decorated in pink, everything is pink, pink, pink! The majority of women business owners in my particular district all decided to have a few strands of pink hair extensions put in the for shopping event. I brought Gracie (my Yorkie) to the business that day and we added a couple pink hair extensions to her...everyone thought it was a cute addition to the theme. However, that being said, it wasn't the best idea because they were difficult to get out and resulted in her and my hair getting broken off - to which I was more upset about her hair than mine. So don't do heat activated hair extensions!!! lol :aimeeyork I can't see where a properly colored Yorkie would look all that good dyed, but as I said before...a maltese (or poodle for that matter) would look pretty neat pink I think. But yeah, as long as the products are safe. |

Morgan looked like a cutie to me.:) I wouldn't do it but that is just because I don't have the time or energy. However, I don't see a problem if safe products are used and obviously you are not physically hurting your pup. I am sure I do lots of other things with my girls they would rather be playing than have me do.:) |

Personally I wouldn't do it, I've seen people try to dye a white horse and it wouldn't come out for months. so the poor pony walked around in the Acadian flag until it fully shed the coat out. |

Your dog looked ridiculous, and most likely the OP's dog will look just as ridiculous. Why would anyone want to do this to a beautiful yorkie's coat?? |
I would not "dye" my yorkies, but only because I LOVE the STANDARD yorkie coloring. But I think it is absurd that Florida has a law against it. If they limited it to allow vegetable-based safe dyes, that would not be so bad. But I think if I wanted to "color" my dogs hair with one of the vegetable-based pet approved products, food coloring, or Kool-aid and some ridiculous law enforcement officer ticketed me --- I would fight it and probably WIN on the law being unconstitutional and extremely silly. I do not think they can be hurt by the products like food coloring and Kool-aid (which I hear works very well and washes out more easily) or the made-for-pets products. Coloring their hair is just one more primping, pampering act some share with their pups. I color my own hair. I allowed one of my sons to get "highlights" when his girl wanted to accent his "beach boy look" and I just don't see the problem if people want to color their dog's hair either. People who do this are usually the ones who love to go overboard with other pampering acts for fun with their pet. They are not abusing them, they are just sharing an experience, having fun, carpe diem, enjoying life with their yorkie family member. While the pet will probably not enjoy the act of coloring their hair (anymore thn they would a shampoo), I am sure they will bask in all the attention it gets them afterward. I say if you want to color their hair (notice how I am staying away from wording like dye/dying/etc), paint their toenails, give them a mohawk or corn rows -- as long as you do it with love -- go for it. Life is too short to take it too seriously. For those that do -- PLEASE post pictures!!! I know I started my post with "I would not dye my yorkies...." but I may just have to challenge the FL law the next Halloween and "color" my yorkies with some Koolaid. The color will probably only "take" on the tan parts but that would be enough for a cute look....maybe green for Ben and purple for Annie. Then maybe Candy (our Jack Russell) could be all orange. Those are great Halloween colors. :D |

I dress very conservative EXCEPT I love wild and crazy socks. I have these mis-matched bright-colored striped ones that really make me smile. I put temporarily coloring a pup's hair, into this same category. Not something I would do all the time, maybe not even at all, but something that has the potential to add some excitement and fun into an otherwise normal day. I might never do it but if I do, I don't think there is a thing in the world wrong with it. Even if I thought it was horrible and not at all in my taste, I would still speak out (write out?) for the RIGHT of every pet owner to make their own decision and not be so judgemental. |

Thank you FlDebra for being the voice of reason... and crazy socks. :) |

Morgan quite enjoyed all the compliments and extra attention she received at the Halloween party, even if she looked "ridiculous". |
