Cat + Yorkie = One stressed out mommy I got my yorkie Quinn the week of Thanksgiving. I also have 2 manx cats that I got 8 years ago in college. Long story short, this week one of my cats has peed all over my bed (including brand new comforter) 3 times! She has randomly peed in closets before (every time I move she has to "mark" the closet) but nothing like this! I think it must be because she's stressed about Quinn. Quinn sometimes chases them around, but she is also sweet to them and licks them--she has never hurt either one. Also, this cat and Quinn both snuggle right next to me and each other every night. But I think that now Quinn is taking away attention that used to be mostly hers (my other cat is very independent), she is unhappy and is making mommy pay for it! I am just at a loss over what to do. I try keeping her out of my room, but I don't think it's fair to not have her sleep with me--it's our snuggle time. I think she would just find somewhere else to pee and be even more mad b/c she wouldn't be getting that time in with me. However, some mornings she'll go under my bed and I can't reach her to get her out of there so I can't lock her out. Has anyone had this type of problem? P.S. I'm taking her to the vet tomorrow morning just to make sure she doesn't have a UTI. |
Glad she will see a Vet. That would have been my suggestion. We love our companion animals like they are our kids, so it just goes hand in hand that we perceive their actions to be human, when in fact, they really don't think the way we do. I'm sure there is another problem that the Vet. can explain. ;) |
This may sound funny but we have a friend who had a similar problem. She used a couple of the kitty poles, shelves & a few tunnels to create a "kitty playground" on one of her walls. The kitties love it & it gives them somewhere to get away from the dog. |

How-ever a couple things, make sure the litter box is up and out of reach of the dogs, ditto food and water. Also keep litter box clean; my Maine Coone if litter box is dirty will go up onto MY side of the bed and either pee or poo. I also have a big tower that Karma can climb and get out of the brat Razz's way. I also leave his crate open, because he likes to go in there, and doesn't like it when Razz goes into his crate. He will also go into all the other dog crates and beds in this house. Not sure why, but he was here first before the dogs came. Comforters, you got to liberally soak them in a enzymatic cleaner, and wash wash wash, but then again, after the "3" accident I went out and bought a new comforter. Then I got a blue tarp sheet, and after getting up I've learned to place over bed. So now if an "accident" happens it goes onto plastic. It's frustrating I know, because sometimes Karma will go on that plastic for no good reason I can discern. |
Thanks guys! Placing a plastic tarp over the bed is a great idea...I'm sick of cleaning my comforter! Thankfully I had a water resistant mattress pad on each time, so it didn't go through the mattress. Also, I've already texted my mom b/c I remembered she has a kitty playground/pole thing that her cat never uses. She said I can have it! Hopefully all of this will help--even though Quinn has completely taken over my heart, I still love my cats! I've been super stressed trying to figure out how to deal with this situation. These are def good ideas and I appreciate y'all taking time to help! :) |

The Kitty Tree's with ledges & cradles are definitely worth having when there are Yorkies around. Now...my Yorkies, especially Abby take great delight in joining Tallulah :cat0: while she's making her way up to the highest cradle. They usually only make it to the lowest cradle due to Tallulah giving them that look of, "one more perch and I can't guarantee you're not gonna meet my sharp paws!" I'll have to post a pic later of Abby actually sleeping on the lowest cradle...she might be part kitty!:D |
1 Attachment(s) See, they sometimes get along :) |
If there's No medical reason after the vet Its important to teach the puppy Leave it when it comes to chasing the cats It will only get worse. Kissing the cat etc is perfectly fine but chasing is never good. |
My cat did the same thing, started with peeing outside the puppy crate (though I thought it was Rizzo the whole time) it wasn't until he peed on my bed that I realized it was the cat. The problem got crazy bad when I fostered a kitten for a few weeks, and even after she found a new home my cat Fatso still continued to pee everywhere. I took him in to the vet and they ruled out any medical issues, I tried twice with the vet sure that there was something wrong with him. She told me to try the Feliway plug in diffusers in the areas where he most commonly had pee "accidents". Since the day I plugged those in there have been no more potty issues :) keeping my fingers crossed that it continues. You may want to give them a try, they're not the cheapest but they seem to be effective. Plus, it seems to have a calming effect on Rizzo, helps both of us sleep through the night :D |

The only thing I could add the above is consider the litter itself. Have you changed the brand or type in the last few months? Or the litter box? I had one large cat that REFUSED to use a box with a lid. I've also had trouble when I've tried pelleted litter or very course litter. I'm currently using the World's Best litter and my cats are fine with that, but the downside is the dogs think it is snack food, the litter alone, even without any kitty crunchies in it any chance they get. |
1 Attachment(s) I have had this problem. We have 15 rescue cats that we've had for quite a long time. When we lived in an apartment we weren't allowed dogs. Then when we got our own home we got Chloe and Cleo our two bassets. My cats were not happy but we have a basement and the cats go down there to escape. Then we got Zoe Zach and Oliver and most of our cats got used to the dogs being around. Some still hide out including a cat that came with the house. Anyway the cats need an escape from the dogs. Look at them today. |

So a physical exam, urinalysis, blood test, and +$200 later, I found out that my cat is perfectly healthy (which is what I predicted.) Since I haven't changed litter, litter boxes (although I added another one upstairs), and she's still using the box with no problem, the vet thinks she's definitely doing it because of the changes the dog has brought on. We are making sure to discipline Quinn everytime she tries to chase the cats and I'm getting my mom's kitty playground in hopes that will help. I need to ask about the Feliway--my concern is that it will affect my other cat who is displaying no behavioral problems. Not sure if that is the case or not. My vet also said it might be a good idea to get my cat on antidepressant medication. Has anyone ever used this? Also, I do have a basement where the cats can escape, but my other cat has pretty much made it her territory. For some reason (I think it's b/c she likes to be near me) the other cat rarely ventures there unless it's to use the litter box. Both of their boxes are in a quiet, dark place. It's just so frustrating b/c you can't have a conversation with your cat about why they're doing this! And I know she's not doing it out of spite! Plus last night in bed, Quinn jumped over me to snuggle up against my cat and she leaned her head back and let Quinn lick all over her. I know she likes her sometimes...I just think she doesn't know how to deal with change well. She's always been a more timid, needy cat. |
