Thank you all for your help Things are going better in my house with my babies. I have kept my doxie seperate from my puppy Sophie. This is working fine. I dont really know how to use this site yet but I am Learning. What wonderful information. Heres my question. I want to know all about collars and harnesses. I have both but I am not sure which is safer. I know the throat is sensitive and you should not pull on a collar. Should you use both and put tags on the collar. Sophie is microchipped but I still worry about this. When she goes into a crate I couldnt leave her with a collar on. Please help if you can. Blessings to all. |
Levi is my "big" yorkie at about 10/11 lbs...I keep a collar on him with his tags. Lily is my lttle girl at 4.7 pounds and she wears a harness all the time with her tags on it. If either goes on a leash walk...I switch Levi into a harness also. Never a collar. Both of mine are confined to my kitchen area. i would not leave a collar on a dog that is crated. I would worry about it being a choking hazard. Just my opinion. |
I keep a collar with tags on both of mine at all times. But for walking and potty breaks, we always use the harness. |

I totally agree with you. I would never leave a collar on. How about a harrness are they safe in a crate or dangerous also? |
My crate has a warning sign that says to not leave a dog in there with a collar. I undress Remy and never put a collar on him, while in the crate. It is a choking hazard. Also, always walk with a harness never a collar. Collars are very dangerous for all small dogs but especially yorkies because of CT. |
Thanks so much.. Are harnesses safe to leave on all the time? |
What is ct |
CT is Collapsed Trachea. |

Can the dog chew it off? |
To leave collars on your dog is a prefrence. If you do, make sure it isn't too tight or too loose, because either way it's unsafe. Too tight can cause pressure on the trachea, too loose and they can actually get their lower jaw under the collar and then can't get it back out. Walking the dog with a "STEP-IN" harness is the safest, since they don't come close to the throat at all. Wearing these all the time can damage the coat and also build up serious matting . If you do choose to let the dog wear a harness all the time, then maybe consider putting the dog in a light weight T-shirt first, and over sweater/jackets during cold weather walks. |
