Pet insurance???
 

I was looking into pet insurance for my little Benji. Is it worth it?

It's worth it in my opinion if you get one that covers congenital and genetic conditions. I have VPI and they denied LP on one of my girls, Liver shunt on another and congenital kidney failure on another. I know there are some threads on here that mention a couple that cover these but I'm not sure. I think one is Pet Plan. Try doing a search and it should come up.

I have pet insurance for Rylie and I'm 100% convinced it is worth it. To know that she would be covered completely no matter what and I could care for her without having to worry about how I'm going to pay for it means a great deal to me and is worth the fee I pay every month.

I have Trupanion and have yet to actually file a claim so I have no comments on how well they follow through with things, but they have the most coverage from my research and are around the same price as those that offer less coverage.

It is a personal choice to get insurance or not and what plan to get if you do. Please read that entire thread as I switched my mind many times. I finally settled on Trupanion. They even have a comparison function on their website which I thought was nice (this info backed up the links I had posted in the "embrace vs. petplan" thread). Check them out.

However, like I said I have yet to make a claim. I will be sure to update if I ever have to, but I'm hoping I'll never have to make a post like that!

Edit: I settled on Trupanion because they have NO lifetime limit and they cover hereditary defects, LP, etc. I also opted in for the hip dysplasia coverage with the extra fee. I really think they are great and reasonably priced.

I also compared Trupanion and Petplan and ended up going with Petplan because they cover hereditary defects as well as cover alternative medical treatments (chiropractic, acupuncture) Buster was on it for 6 months when he was diagnosed with Luxating Patella and they covered it and I got my refund back quickly. Buster had a lot of health issues when I first got him so it seemed the wisest thing to do. Just remember as good as insurance is you still need a cash reserve as you have to pay first and then be reimbursed.

We have Pets Best insurance, it's out of Boise,ID, it's really good and easy to use. They have both on line and phone help. I'm not very good with insurance forms of any kind :p and not knot knowing anything about little dogs or dogs at all, to be truthful, we made MANY trips to the vet in Sprockets first year with us. The insurance was just like mine 80/20, fill out the form they send you the $$ in a couple of days. Our vet worked with us to help make sure the form was filled out right and cust service at the insurance was great. And I was a pain cause I didn't know anything. Now when we travel, I call let them know we will be out on the road and in case of accident, Sprocket is covered, just like DH and I are. Such a relief. Now it's not cheap, but it's also not really expensive either and the security it brings is worth the cost to me.

I also have Trupanion for Taycie although I am the same and have yet to use it as well. I like that they cover congential/hereditary dectects etc. I also opted for hip dysplasia coverage as well. (They also cover 90% of the bill).

What sold me the most was they have NO limetime limit. I pray Taycie never has to endure something horrible but I would hate to worry I had paid into something and my coverage was running out.

You can also choose your own deductible up to 1000. I actually chose not to have one and with Hip Dysplasia it only costs me 37 a month. Not bad at all.

For me, I think it is worth it. Vet Bills add up REALLY fast and I hate to have to worry about money during an extra stressful time.

I have VPI and so far have had no problems HOWEVER I recommend the others that cover congenital conditions because my little girl was just diagnosed with luxating patella and I know if she ever has problems with this then it will not be covered. I was also worried about liver shunt problems and I should have checked because VPI does not cover this as well.....
