add a rescue golden?
 
Bear is our wonderful 12 year old yorkie baby. We recently moved to 6 acres and are considering adopting a 7year old rescue Golden Ret. Bear has always loved other dogs - big or small. Sometimes he jumps to the back of the couch to get space if a friend's lab was around. I would never want to upset him but he may enjoy a playmate. He whines when we mention his old friends at our previous home. I am very hesitant but the husband and kids want the golden based on the information on how calm and loving she is... Any thoughts???:aimeeyork

I have a soft spot for Golden's, they are wonderful dogs. Very gentle mouths. We had our Golden with our Mini doxie for 7 years without any problems between the two. I would recommend you try and get the two together in a neutral place to see how they get along. If they "click", then go for it.

In my personal experience with our yorkie, he has loved having company. We had our yorkie Ivan for 7 years and due to unrelenting pressure from the kids we finally gave in and bought a Chocolate Lab. He was a little apprehensive about having the intruder in at first, but once they warmed up to eachother, now they regularly lay down at the foot of the couch together and fall asleep:animal36. My husband and I both work so I always felt bad about leaving our dog home alone before but at least he now had some company! Our Yorkie and Lab are now best friends and I am glad to know that one of them doesn't have to spend all day in an empty house locked up and alone!:)

We have two bassets a yorkie and a shorkie and everybody gets along great. They eat together, play together and sleep together. We never had a problem.

We have a terrific golden male years ago that lived to be 14. He was the most gentle dog .....Believe we got in in 86 and he was 12 when we got Maxine. After he passed, we got Carlo.

There has been a lot of bad breeding with the Golden. Some of them are complete nutcases. Very high strung, neurotic. Just make sure you know what you are getting. We have several of these nutcases in our subdivision that always want to attack Carlo. Several times I was tempted to dtop his leash and teach them a lesson, but then Good Steve Took over from Evil Steve.

We have a couple in our neighborhood that are very good with people, but they are dog aggressive, especially with small dogs. One also suffers from terrible separation anxiety.

I personally would never leave a Golden unsupervised with a Yorkie, especially if I didn't know the exact history of the dog.

We had a golden and he was one of the smartest dogs. He was like a puppy until the day he died and was so sweet with everyone - human and animal. I'd definitely let your yorkie meet the golden in a neutral location and see how they do together.
