My very first Yokie! Hello everyone! I am a very proud owner of a 3 month old Yorkie!! My boyfriend and I named him Duke :) I feel like a newborn mother! I'm not familiar with how to train him with going potty. He seems to only want to go inside our home and hasn't gone outside yet. We are crate training him, but in Duke's defense, it's only been a day! Any recommendations would be appreciated!! We spent about 2 hours in Petco last night and I'm just trying to be like a sponge and absorb as much info and advice as I can :) I am very happy to be a part of the Yorkie community now! Thanks :animal-pa |
Congratulations!! Congrats on your new baby!!!! Potty training for yorkies can be a long process....Since you're using the crate....the best thing to do is take him outside each time you take him out of the crate...and wait for him to go...if he doesn't go potty....i'd put him back in the crate....I would let my girls play for a little while outside of the crate after they pottied outside...it's just a trial and error thing... Puppies generally have to potty... As soon as they wake up After they eat After they play After they chew on toys, etc. And lots and lots of times in between!!!! :D I'd make sure to have a potty pad down outside of the crate...so at least he can use that if he needs to go and you're not aware.... Good luck and I'm sure you'll get lots and lots of advice!:) |
Awesome! Thank you so much, I really appreciate your help :) |
First things first While it's fun to take your new puppy to pet stores to show him off please make sure he has limited contact to strange dogs and cats until he has had all his vaccinations. My Yorkie is 3 yrs old and I still won't let him walk around pet stores because of all the diseases he could catch from other dogs urine, etc. Parvo, one of the worst things your puppy can catch and it is spread from via their feet. Good luck with your little one. |
Congratulations on your first Yorkie. You have come to the right place for information. If you don't get the answers that will work for you, if you use the Search function you be in potty training overload. There are so many different ideas about potty training you have to find one that makes sense to you. Good Luck -- and if you come up with some neat little tricks that work well, please post them. The first thing I'd do is find a very high level treat -- one that your baby would do ANYTHING to get. Use this specific treat ONLY for good potty! If you are training to go outside, I would select a spot you want Duke to use. Every time you take him outside take him to that spot and tell him to go _____. I am embarrassed to say that I started with TinkleDinkle and Poopsie.:D. Any when they "do the deed" praise them like there is no tomorrow and give the treat and take immediately back inside. If you are consistent, it won't take very long before Duke will at least get the idea, but it may take several months for him to get good at it. Remember the praise and treats! |
Congrats! I know what you mean about feeling like a newborn mother lol! ... My boyfriend and I just got our first Yorkie almost 2 months ago and he was 10 weeks old when we got him. It's really trial and error with the potty training I think. We took Buster out every hour when we first got him. When he went potty outside we gave him a treat (a piece of his food). Since then he has started going to the door and crying or scratching at it when he has to go so he is catching on! There has been the occasional accidents but he is making great progress! We are also crate training Buster. He is getting a lot better with that too! There were some bad nights and some sleep was lost but it's getting better everyday. He's to the point now where he knows thats where he sleeps and when he is tired he walks in on his own and lays down. Potty/crate training can get frustrating at times but just remember he's only a baby and it gets better! I hope that sharing my personal experiences I've had with my Buster helps a bit. Congrats on your new addition and welcome to YT! It really is a great little online community! |
Hi and welcome to YT! congrats on your new baby, duke. My yorkie is 6 months old and still has accidents. :( yorkies are very hard to potty train! My little guy is getting the hang of it now! I am also crate training. You have to take them out as soon as you open the door of the crate. I also found I had to stay outside a long time(an hour) before Remy would potty! So stay out there. While and praise him and give him a treat when he goes! Good Luck!! |
Welcome to you and Duke. I read books about Yorkies but I have learned so much more on this site. People will give great advice and are so compassionate here. Plus nobody thinks you are the crazy Yorkie lady here because they understand how wonderful Yorkies really are and how much the add to your life. |
Welcome to YT! Yes, you'll feel like a newborn mother for a while. Don't let the sleepless nights get to you - it will get better, we promise!!! |
Welcome to YT congrats !!! Patches & Winnie |
