Your Yorkie's Personality? How would you describe your yorkie's personality? I am a first time yorkie owner of T.J. who will be one in February. I have owned all types of breeds of dogs, but never a yorkie. With that said, in the most loving way I can, he is the most ornery, ill mannered (towards others), rotten little thing I've ever wittnessed. Now, I want to follow that up with I am madly in love with this dog as he is me. With me, he is like a little floppy warm water bottle, kisses, loves, plays, etc. It is just that at times I am almost embarrassed of how terrible he is in the company of others. SO, I am wondering if this behavior is somewhat of the norm, or are there sweet, charming yorkies out there? :p BTW, I wouldn't trade him for one! ;) |
Mine are pretty good natured really I dont have any complaints. The only problem I have with them is sometimes they antagonize the cats but its not all the time its like if the cats jump up on the bed at night. They consider that their territory. I dont know how old your pup is but mine are 6 and they do mellow with age |
Well, Remy is almost 6 months old. He is demanding or should I say spoiled? If you are sitting he will whine to be picked up. He is a sweetheart though and never meets a stranger. His little butt will just start to wagging as soon as someone wants to pet him. He loves people, other dogs(except our boxer:() and he is full of adventure. |
They are all sure different. Maxine never liked Children, but she loves the elderly. When we are out in public with her, and little kids walk up and ask if they can pet her, we have to tell them no, but instead to pet her 137 pound Brother, Carlo. A few times holding her while opening the front door, she will lunge out and try to nip the person if she does not recognize them. This is a dog that was heavily socialized as a pup and throughout her life. Even in her travel bag at the airport waiting, if a kid walks buy, she will let out a explosive bark. Well, as explosive as a little Yorkie can sound. They are all different. Funny, the Large GUARDIAN BREED is the mellow one. Thank God I suppose. I just could not imagine Maxines Temperment in Carlo's body. |
Peyton is a very sweet little girl. she is goodnatured. she loves to please, and she's very smart :) |
As others have said, their personalities can be so different. Bullet (my male) is a cuddle bug with my husband and I and is always by our side, but is not particularly friendly with strangers (both human and canine). Rio (my female) is our Walmart greeter - she loves all humans and dogs she comes across, but is very independent and needs her alone time at home! |
Well...it is sounding that he really is that rotten. My friends have actually nicknamed T.J. "Chuckie Dog" ! |
Ellie is stubborn and self-centered. She has to have her way. She is aggressive and always need reminders about what the rules are. She seems to know what she can get away with. She knows what she is doing wrong and knows better, but does it anyway and then runs. She is the sweetest, most loving cuddly girl with the most personality I have ever seen in a dog. :) |
Zada is sweet as honey to everything breathing!! Azrael keeps her distance from people, but will warm up to some of them eventually. Razael is very friendly but a bit jumpy at times especially noises she doesn't understand, then she barks. |
My Cookie is very sure of herself. She is protective of me and her sister Izzy. She will growl at other dogs if she is in my lap. But of all the furbabies that I have had, yorkies are the best!! I love both my babies and they seem to love me. They snuggle with me at night and when we go to bed and they are so happy when I get home! |
I would probably have to say that the term for female dog came to be after my Gracie!! Love her to pieces, but "Diva" definitely would describe her (also). Carly: Love her to pieces too, but..."Odie" - "Dumb Blonde" lol Harlow: Definitely "Gazelle" - gorgeous in stride (in fact I'm trying to incorporate Gazelle into her registered name) Issabella: a little young to tell yet, but maybe "Spitfire" would fit Dos: Lovable Lunk! |
I call Buster my goodwill ambassador. He is friendly with people, dogs, cats. He just has a great disposition. The only time he ever growled at another dog was when his girlfurfriend Lola was over. Lola has food aggression issues and I was trying to get a bully stick away from her, at her mother's request, and she growled at me. Well Buster got all upset and barked at her really telling her off and then he came over and licked my nose like mommy are you ok. I tell you I never have felt so loved and defended in my whole life. I still smile every time I think about it. Buster does give me a little attitude if he feels I am not preparing his dinner fast enough or if it is time for bed and I do not immediately go to bed. |
It is amazing how different they can be...My little boy, Buzz, is sweet and cuddly and gets along w/every human and every pup...He's kinda laid back, and likes to sleep in late...My little Chorkie, loves all people, but no other pups, but tolerates Buzz & Apple, because they were here, before her lol, but I know she would like to be an only child...lol...Apple loves everybody, and some pups, but she's not a cuddly yorkie...She's fiesty, full of personality, absolutely adorable to look at, and keeps me laughing all day long w/her antics...Yorkies (and chorkies) are a breed unto themself...I've never experienced this kind of relationship w/my canine pals....These guys are tripendicular! |
1 Attachment(s) Axel is a male and has a very lovable, he loves to cuddle he sleeps on my chest if I'm on my back and when I turn over I have to give him pillow room, I actually think dh is jealous if he is not between us when he get sleepy he is ready to cuddle...he is sweet, loves other people. Keeps his distance with other dogs. Finally quit chewing on my shoes ha ha! He however, is a little thief! can't trust him out by himself. Can't leave nothing on the end tables of coffee tables. He poops like five times a day! and its hit or miss on the pad! thank god he pee pee's on it. And no matter what I do he just will not pick up his toys! They are spread from one end of the livingroom to the other. But have to say best dog I have every owned. Here he is, we just enjoy him we call him our hot rod dog! he goes to all the streetrod runs with us. My friends just look at me like really? But I don't care. We have even refused dinner invites, unless they have outside dinning. |
Levi is a wild little lover. He has seriously never met a stranger. He is so friendly and social and outgoing. He has his "favorite" buddies but he is always friendly to everyone. He is very, very active and playful and curious. He just turned three, but there is still something so sweet and puppylike about him. He loves to run around and play and chase and go on adventures. He is very excitable and tends to bark if someone isn't paying attention to him, or if he hears a loud noise outside. He is a wild, funny little man and I just love him to pieces! |

I agree that they are all so different. My first yorkie, Jessie, was a little love bug with me and DH. She was submissive and obedient. She loved other people especially children but did not get along with other dogs. Now Jamie at a year and a half is a split personality. Sometimes she is so sweet and loving and other times, mostly with my Dh, a little brat and demanding. She needs to be the center of attention at all times. She loves all people and all dogs. Her best friends are a 180 pound rottweiler and a 150 pound sherpard mix. She holds her own with them. |
Suzi will be 3 yrs old in March. SHe has always been highly energetic . She is very smart . Suzi is a great watchdog. Her bark is loud and she sounds like a bigger dog, I have had people come to my door, hear her bark, then turn around and leave. She loves children, they are her favorite. I was amazed , stunned , about the way she behaves around little kids. She rolls on her back and lets them pet her, even a toddler. Suzi does not like men in uniform though. She goes crazy, and into protective mode. The guy who delivers water, PG&E , all of them don't stand a chance ! BUt, if she knows the man , she is very friendly . Friendly to everybody. Just at home , when she hears people and can't see them, she barks. Suzi is loving, sweet, and likes to lick people's faces. She greets everyone by trying to jump , only reason she gets away with that is because of her size. We love her so much. She is our first Yorkie , and she is amazing. We have a young 5-6 month old pup . She is different then Suzi. Mellow, laid back, wanting attention all the time. She is still getting use to her sisters, and has shown her teeth at them and growled. She is cery calm and darling. ANd she is learning from Suzi too. |
Zach is a bit selfish and take advantage of Oliver our little shih tzu who is 10 weeks old. If Oliver has a toy Zach who is 10 months old will take the toy from Oliver because Oliver is the only one who will let him. We have two bassets and Zach has tried to get toys from them but one growl from them and he runs. Zoe our Shorkie is 14 months old will not let him take things from her either so he constantly bothers Oliver because he's not old enough to fight back. He's getting there though. Zach weighs 6 1/2 lbs and Oliver is about 5 lbs now. Pretty soon he's going to outweigh Zach and then watch out. |
Rosie is very loving and wants to be held. She likes to sleep in my lap at all times. She is usually very friendly to most humans but does not like to have other dogs around. She loves my husband too. She sleeps right in the middle of us. When he gets to close, she growls at him. :p Let's just say I have her trained! :D She does not like other dogs in her house. My friend brought her male yorkie over (both are fixed btw) and Rosie jumped on the couch and growled at him. She did not want to play at all. She is very spoiled and I call her Miss Priss sometimes. She is such a girl! Wouldn't trade her for anything else! |
chester is 8 plus years and he is very sweet, loves kids, cats and people but in the last few years he does not like certain dogs mostly the larger ones, he will growl at them and show them who is boss. He is a mommas boy and that is fine with me. He was socialized alot as a puppy and he is also stubborn like a yorkie and very smart |
My Shelby rae is so sweet and shy but very persistent when she wants something while Kaylee bear is playful and obsessed with playing ball and she is lazer focused on what she wants with the patience of a saint...once she brought me the ball to play and I got busy and an hour later I looked up and she was still sitting there staring at me...she can be quite mischievous too they are just like kids.:) |
It's so fun to read about the personalities of everyone's babies! Roxie is a great little dog. She loves everyone she meets. She especially likes children...though she is a bit wary of my twin 3-year old nieces who chase her around like crazy. Roxie does not seem too crazy about other dogs...especially some of the dogs in our neighborhood. She will start barking and lunging as soon as she sees another dog. We usually have to turn around and go the other direction. Roxie loves to play, and if she wants your attention, she will just come over and bark right in your face or drop a toy at your feet. She is a little cuddle bug, and our butts can barely touch the couch before she is right up on top of you. She loves to give kisses as well. Roxie can be a little devil too. Usually she will go behind the recliner when she wants to do something bad...like rip the stuffing out of one her toys. :devils2: I love her to pieces...I don't think I could have asked for a better dog! |
