In heat? My almost 5-month-old puppy, Zoe, has started "backing up" to my male cavalier...kind of swishing her tushie in his face. Is this related to going into heat? At what age do yorkies typically hit that stage? Would this be affected by the fact that she has not had a healthy start in life, and is still only 2.5 lbs? I know with my female cavalier it was fine to let her go through one heat cycle and then spay her, which we did. This seemed to cause her nipples to swell a bit and stay swollen even once her heat was over. Also, I've read conflicting opinions on this. What is recommended for female yorkies? We will, of course, spay her, but would hope she could get a little healthier and bigger first? Thank you for your help on this (guess I never really learned enough about the "Canine Birds and the Bees"! :blush08: Of course, maybe she's just feeling super sassy in her new outfit from Ashlee!;) |
Yorkies can go into heat starting around 6 months up to 13 or 14 months. Is she bleeding or is it swollen? My girl waited until she was 9 months old to go into heat |
I don't know anything about heat as I've never experienced one with any of my pets, but I've done reading. It sounds like she could be in heat as I believe that's ONE sign, but there should be others. Hopefully someone who knows more will chime in. I DO know that going through heat can cause increased risks of certain cancers, etc., but I'm not sure how much one cycle increases those risks. Again, hopefully someone else can chime in. I understand why you waited with her being so small, but I've always spayed prior to first heat... so unfortunately I don't have any insight for you. I wish I could help more! |
While I haven't ever seen or heard of a Yorkie going into heat at 5 months old I guess it is possible. What you describe can be a sign that the female is in season but she is so very young. Typically Yorkies don't get their first heat until after 9 months old so I would wonder about your girl. There are other conditions like infections of the uterus or bladder that may could "confuse" your puppy and she might think she was in heat. I would recommend you take her to the vet and get it checked out - just in case. I would expect most vets would like to have her a little larger to do the spay surgery as well but it would be safe to do now if you would like. Vet procedures are safer now and vets more "skilled" at doing surgeries on small dogs so 5 months would not be too young to have her spayed (I would not spay her while she is in heat -if she is - because there is an increased risk of bleeding if spayed when in heat). There is conflicting information out there about pediatric spays so most people wait until 6-9 months to have the spay done so the vet can remove any retained puppy teeth at the same time.
