Not a Yorkie but advice appreciated Okay, I would like to say first off that this is not about a Yorkie. If I need to have the Admin delete the thread I will understand. What I am hoping for is just for some good advice from experienced owners. My mom is getting a Toy Poodle in a month. This is to be her baby and to hopefully give her something to get out of bed for everyday when/if things get rough. Does anyone know what type of brush is best for their type of hair? I know a lot of us have other dogs besides Yorkies in our homes. I am looking for what really works. I got her a really good book that takes her through each week for the first year of the puppies life. She has already read through her first 3 months so that she knows what her puppy is experiencing. My mom only works a couple of days a week for only a few hours each day. She is an Ovarian Cancer survivor so this little furr butt is going to keep her moving and happy even on her bad days. At least that is our plan. The breeder is a good friend of mine and this little one was hand picked. She already has a great disposition and sweet personality. Not overly dominant. Lays on her back to sleep. Any advice that someone might want to give I will definitely appreciate. I just so want this to go well. Sometimes I feel like I am the one getting the puppy because I worry about and all. I am taking care of the vet costs and the supplies for her so please let me know if you think I should be looking at something specific. Thank you all for your help. |
Toy poodles are circus dogs. My daughter has one, and what a little clown. Always moving, always on the go, and never seen such a small dog jump so high. I am sure it will be a great little pal for your Mom. As far as brushes, I have no idea. I know my daughters poodle goes into the groomer on a regular basis, and even has its nails painted! Best of luck. |
I think they're cute. This should help with the coat care: Basic Toy Poodle Care Requirements Grooming - Poodles, regardless of the style in which their coat is clipped, require daily grooming. The coat should be brushed and combed every day to keep it free from mats. Owners need to be gentle when they brush the dog and thick mats should be clipped out. The coat requires a trim every six to eight weeks and should be bathed every couple of months. To keep coat care as simple as possible, the dog should be kept in the "pet clip" (also known as the "puppy clip" or "lamb clip"). Note - Toy Poodles that are shown will require more extensive grooming. The ears of the Poodle need to be checked and cleaned for wax, infection and mites frequently. The hair within their ear canal should also be plucked on a regular basis to help keep ears healthy. Their teeth should be brushed a few times per week, and need regular scaling. They shed hair very little and are often good pets for allergy sufferers. Exercise - This breed enjoys being active and his exercise needs can be easily taken care of. Walks, playing fetch, learning tricks, swimming and letting him run around off lead in an enclosed space are all great ways to help him release his energy and stay healthy. They should be taken on a minimum of a 20 minute walk per day and must have exercise that involves social interaction for their mental wellbeing. Toy Poodle Breed Information |
My friend has two males that are just little dolls. They love to give kisses and cuddle. For grooming, she uses a pin style brush and metal comb. |
Hi! My mom has a maltipoo(Maltese/poodle). He is 100% toy poodle IMO, the Maltese gene skipped him:). They are a joy and very smart! He knows a LOT of human words. Your mom will truly enjoy a poodle. Tear stains can be a problem, especially if the poodle is white. My mom uses a slicker brush and he has to go to the groomed often, their hair is VERY curly and kinky. Hope your mom enjoys the new addition! |
I had a poodle growing up and I can never get over how intelligent the breed is. They make wonderful companions. Congratulations to your mom on her new furry love. We always kept my poodle's hair short. Always. He went to the groomer way more often than I take my Yorkie. We used a comb around his facial area and a pin brush on his hair...but usually kept his hair so short that it didn't require much brushing. I want to own another poodle one day! My boy was a total doll and I miss him every day. Your mom will love her new buddy! |
Ask your groomer if you don't have one go the nearest pet store with a grooming section and ask them they will help you. but i believe My mom's friend who has a standared poodle told me she uses a pin brush and a slicker |
Before Joey, I had a poodle that was 16 years old when she passed...I kept her pretty short and they do need to be combed/brushed regularly...as you know yorkies need to be groomed alot but if they get tangles you can usually get them combed out... poodles not so easily..and if they get matted the only thing a groomer can do is to shear them short.. at first I loved to keep Keisha long and blow dry her to a fluff ball, while it looked really pretty upkeep was demanding usually no more than two days without a really good brushing....after a few years the shorter version became very appealing to me, I only had to do her ears weekly and could get by. They are wonderful pets, but after losing her, I just couldn't do another poodle, and after much research, I decided on a yorkie, and with Joey, I am so glad I went with this breed..of course it could just be that I got the best of the breed when I got Joey!!! |
You have all given me such great advice. The breeder and I have been friends for over 16 years. When she found out what I wanted to do for my mom, she hand picked the puppy and will not let me pay for her. She is also friends with my mom and is giving her this puppy. I am taking care of the registration, spaying (she is getting a girl), shots and crate/beginning supplies. The little girl she is getting is Jet Black and has blue eyes. She is absolutely beautiful. My mom already named her Missi. They have met 3 times now and my mom is already attached. We did have one hurtle that we had to talk about. My moms cancer is a reoccuring and aggressive one. Unless science finds a new way to kill the cancer cells then it will come back and possibly take her. The doctor has said that she is in his 5 year group. That means that we have at least 5 years to watch her spoil Missi and her grandkids. If there comes a time that she can no longer care for or if God decides that He is ready for my mom to leave this world, then Missi will come to live with my family. This was a concern of my moms but now it is settled. Thank you for the tips about the hair length. Right now she says that she wants to let her hair stay long. Missi will probably sit on her lap each night while mom watches a show and mom will brush her then :D. I will be taking her to the groomers to get her ear hair pulled and bathed and probably her teeth brushed. I have a really nice groomer here that I take my Yorkies too. I will take her as soon as we get shots completed so that she can get that part of her socialization in ;). When she gets her home the end of Feb I will take some pictures and post them. I know how much everyone on here loves pictures. :p |
I don't have any advice but I know Missi will bring so much joy to your Mom. What a sweet thing do for your Mom. I will keep her in my prayers to exceed the doctors prediction. |
I shall be watching for pics next month!:D I hope she helps keep your mom busy and going. Sending prayers for your mom and your family. What a nice daughter you are! |
You are a very sweet, loving daughter. What a blessing you are for your mother! I am sure Missi will be a lot of entertainment and comfort for your mother. And who knows, maybe having a puppy to love will put your mother in the ten year group, or longer. I hope so. |
My mom found out that Toy Poodles can live 12 to 15 years and it made her worry that only 1/3 of her puppies life is what she has been told. That is my prayer as well that she live as long as her puppy. I have a 4yo and a 7yo that I would love for her to see them graduate. She is only 67yo. She acts like she is 47. When I was younger my mom would take me and my friends to our local roller skating rink. She was not only the chaperon but she would get out on the floor and skate with us. She was always fun. She was still a mom but fun to have around. We went through a couple of rough patches but now we go off for the day and shop or just hang out and enjoy time together. We are already talking about visiting some of the dog friendly restaurants and stores with our dogs on my days off. :D Thank you everyone for the compliments and prayers. When my mom was diagnosed they gave her a year at the most. She was diagnosed with Stage 3 Ovarian Cancer. She did not tell me this until after her 1 year anniversary from surgery. That is my mom 100 percent. She did not want me to worry. She said that she prayed and asked to let her see my son graduate. Unless he fails, he is set to graduate June 2012. That is too soon for me :( I needed her to have something else to live for. Someone offered her their dog that they had decided to rehome. She said yes but then they changed their mind. That is what gave me the idea for the puppy. I am praying that it all works out well. The treatment that they used was very effective on her cancer cells and the doctor said that is a very good sign. I appreciate the compliments about me being a good daughter but I have to say honestly that I am just a daughter trying to keep my mom happy and around for as long as God will allow. I am not ready to let her go yet. After seeing her with this little puppy, my thoughts were confirmed that this little girl will bring tons of joy into her life. Teal is the color for Ovarian cancer. I have an order with Darlin Beauxs for a teal pair of bows for this little furr angel to wear to show her support for her new mommy. Again I just want to say thank you all for your kind words. |
I love poodles! My Son & DIL have two that are super smart! She grooms hers herself, but I am not sure what she is using. I doubt anyone would mind a poodle thread occasionally in the General Yorkshire Terrier forum, but if you want to find a place to talk more about other breeds, even other animals.... Our Yorkie Brothers & Sisters - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community We have a forum for that too. I only bring it up for you because there is a thread there called "Poodle Talk!" :) Might find some other interesting info there. But I am not in any way saying not to post here! Just giving an additional source. |

I love the idea of teal bows. How sweet!:) |
My plan is to get her a teal dress to go with it but I have to wait till I see the shade and all so I can match it. She went this afternoon to see her again. The tone in her voice picks up when she talks about her. She goes to the oncologist on the 28th of Feb in the morning and then goes and picks up her baby that afternoon. Regardless of what the doctor says I know that my mom's day will end on a good note. (of course I am praying for good news) :D |
That's a wonderful way for her to end her day. How could she possibly have any bad news on such a great day? It'll be good news! Just watch!:) |
What a loving person you are :). I bet this little kiddo will bring untold joy and love into your Mom's world. Dogs are so healing too. I don't have advice for grooming, but it looks like you already got lots of help there. Btw, don't ever worry about posting questions like this...all people and their doggies are welcome here. :) |
1 Attachment(s) Sorry guys I forgot that I had a picture from when my mom met her a couple of weeks ago. Here you go. You cant see Missi very well but you can see that she is lovingly cradled in my moms arms. I will post a better picture of her soon and of course one after she goes home with my mom. Thank you all again for the advice and such kind words. |
What a precious picture that is. It's very touching. That little puppy is already very well-loved. |
That is such a sweet photo of them...please let her know we are sending Best Wishes and Prayers her way...Missy will bring much joy and bright moments her way...she may even be able to take her with her during her treatments. You can check this out on the 28th while there....They look as though they belong together... |

Each time I see them together it just reaffirms for me that my friend and I did the right thing. She already loves her so much. |
I realize that it has been a little while but I wanted to update you all with her going home pictures. Unfortunately we did not get good news at the doctors but they are optimistic and on top of it. We also know that God is in control so we will trust Him to guide the way. http://smilebox.com/playBlog/4d6a4d7...&blogview=true |
I am sorry... but your story has made me cry. I lost my mom 15 years ago and I will tell you one word of advice. Love her every minute you have her with you. I live near you... I think .. I have an extra crate and small puppy stuff if you need it. Your mom will love the little poodle.. I had one as a pre teen and he was so smart and loving!! A great choice. I will add your family to my prayers. and I hope to hear many stories of job about your mom and her puppy. |

I took my time and over the past 7 weeks I had gotten her almost everything she needed. Somehow I forgot to get her a leash and harness. But that is okay because she went today and picked out a leash and pretty pink harness. That is what she is wearing in the pictures. Guess I needed to let her buy something for her new puppy. LOL She is a very good puppy already. Mom has had her for 24 hours and no accidents in the house or her crate. My mom drove a friend to a drs apt today because they had car problems. She was gone 3 hours and Missi held it that entire time. She did not go in her crate and she waited until she got outside and squatted and went. My mom praised her a lot for that one. They are really off to a great start. |
Friend uses a wide tooth comb...seems to work well for them. Yes there is a forum for other breeds. |
It is obvious your mom loves her new baby! I will send prayers for your mum and your family. :) P.S. Her pup is just too cute!!! |
