Pet insurance covering ACL rupture? My Molly has a partially torn ACL....trying to let it heal but I know the odds of this aren't good. I have VPI insurance for her and I know they don't cover luxating patellas and she has them in each leg. I know dogs are more prone to ACL tears with luxating patellas so I am nervous that VPI won't pay for the ACL repair. Does anyone have any experience with this? My question is....even though she does have luxating patellas, will VPI pay for her ACL repair since this was an injury? Thanks to anyone who can help! |
Your vet would have to turn it in as an accident. You can have them check ahead of time for you. I wouldn't wait. Torn acl is very painful. |
So sorry to hear about your poor dog. I can not help you with VPI.That is one of the reasons I chose to go with Pet Plan they cover LP surgery and also accept alternative treatments..Chiropractic, acupuncture etc. I only was with Pet plan about 6 months when Buster was diagnosed with LP in both rear legs. We only needed surgery for 1 leg at this time but they covered it. Good luck and best wishes to you and your dog. |
A torn ligament in a dog will not heal and if left torn, they develop severe arthritis. This is information that was given to me by the orthopedic vet surgeon that I use. If you have not already, I strongly recommend a consult with a board certified surgeon. If you don't know one in your area, you can search on American College of Veterinary Surgeons With regards to insurance coverage, I am sorry I have no knowledge. Good luck! |
Did you ever speak with the groomer about this? I cannot help but think that something must have happened there. |
Thanks everyone. I know she isn't going to heal. I am so sad for her to have surgery. I wish I would have gone with Pet Plan. When I got Jax and Molly I didn't know about LP or liver shunts...etc not being covered. I did call the groomer and she insists that nothing happened but I know that is not true. Before she left for the groomer, she was her happy self and 3 hours later when she came home she was limping. I know accidents happen, I am not angry about that, I just want to know IF something happened. And now I am going to have a huge surgery bill...when I have freakin' insurance. I have a feeling that VPI will give me the runaround because she has been diagnosed with bilateral LP and an ACL tear in her left leg. Great. |
Use care credit. Be sure to use a board certified orthopedist. At least it is something that can be repaired and with time your little one will be healthy and active again. |

Yes, she will be good as new once the surgery is over. I am sorry you are faced with this bill. Just something that does happen with these little ones. Do try to get the insurance to cover it...maybe they will. I hope so. It may have happened on your watch as well...but I sure as heck would never use that groomer again. Pups will LP are more apt to tear the cruciate ligament. It happened to one of my fosters not so long ago. She had surgery and is fine now! |
Sorry to hear about Molly. I have VPI and they denied Pixie's LP surgery, Cali's liver shunt and Dixie's congenital kidney failure. They may try and say it's related to her LP. Many years ago I had a yorkie that tore his ACL and they regrooved his knee cap when they repaired the ACL. So if they do that I am guessing they will deny the whole surgery. I used the Care Credit for Pixie's LP surgery. I wish I had gone with one that covered all these conditions. |
Patti~Me too:confused: If I knew then what I know now.....I wonder sometimes what good is VPI insurance used for? It seems every problem we have with our babies is not covered. If I am going to have to put my girl under for ACL repair then I am definitely going to address her LP as well. |

I have VPI as well and it covered nothing for Gilmore's luxiating patella surgery. I have not been happy with their reimbursements and think I am going to drop it. They don't seem to cover anything. So frustrating!!! |
