First time posting in months, Chloe's upcoming dental I have not posted in a few months, I can't believe it has been that long! I have been looking on the forums but Chloe likes to lay in one arm and look at the monitor so it is hard to type with one hand. Chloe loves to look at pictures and watch videos on the computer. I have been looking on here to find more info because my Chloe is going to have her teeth cleaned in a few weeks. I know she will have to have some pulled too, she lost one loose tooth already. I have been using the Petzlife for about a month now and it has done wonders on them, of course I plan to use it after she has them cleaned. I have two Vets near me, one is about 10 minutes closer than the other one so I may go to them, I already take Munchkin there. I called the other day to get an idea of what it will cost and they do use isoflurane, I will ask what they use before putting them under when I take her in to get her antibiotics before the cleaning. Also, they recommend the blood work before surgery, I already knew I wanted it. I worry about her because she is about 4.5 - 5 pounds, closer to 5 but that is still tiny to me, she was already spayed when I got her. I don't think either of the Vets near me use warmers during the cleaning, I will ask again when I take her in. I am so glad that I found this forum, there is so much great info on here! |
She will probably do just fine but its always scary and it doesn't matter if their 3lbs, 5lbs or 10lbs! I always do the bloodwork even though my vet has told me that when you have a younger pup the bloodwork could be off just because their growing and have more fluctations than adults do. My vets office uses the isoflurane and also has them on a special heated pad. I personally do a full blood profile vs the minimal pre-op bloodwork simply so i have a full baseline to compare back to if i ever needed in the future. You really only need the pre-op portion done as its about half the cost. Your costs will vary and the vet will only be able to give you a range because it will depend on a number of factors including time spent, number of teeth removed, additional test needed, etc. I have personally spent anywhere between $300-$500 for a teeth cleaning with extractions. This is also a good time to get a microchip put in if you haven't already done so since they will already be under anesthesia. Your vet will probably send you home with some antibotics and possibly pain medication. It depends on how many teeth were extracted and if any possible infection is found. When you have a number of baby teeth that need to be extracted, sometimes you can get a pocket of infection that occurs. Depending on how many teeth and which teeth they are, your vet may also recommend a soft diet for a few days. The more teeth removed, the more tender they will be. Hope that helped! |
I haven't posted in a LONG time either!! WB to both of us!! We just adopted a ten yr. old yorkie..and her teeth are in pretty bad shape! She obviously wasn't taken care of! I know we have to get her into the vet too! She has a 9 yr. old baby my sister adopted that doesn't have ONE tooth in her little head!! so sad!! Hope all goes well with your baby!!! |
Pixie gets a dental every yer now due to bad teeth and gums. She just turned 5 and she weighs a little over 4 lbs she did really well. They put her on antibiotics before and after too. Cali had her first cleaning last year at 5 and she has a mild liver condition so the used a special protocol but she did great. It sounds like you have done the research and she should do fine. It is a pretty quick procedure. I will keep positive thoughts for her and you. |

Thanks for all of the info everyone! I have to get her antibiotics to start her on 3 days before so they said they will take a look at her then. She is still tiny to me at 4.5 - 5 pounds but she keeps Roscoe in line, I think he is around 10 - 12 pounds now, his nickname is Chunky Monkey. At least she will have Munchkin to help take care of her when she comes home, Munchkin has treated Chloe like her puppy from the day she came here, she even tried to carry her once! I will be sure to post when she has it done. Thanks again! |
You sound like you have done your homework. Sending my best wishes for Chloe. Let us know how it goes.:) |
