Newbie & Her New Buddy!!! Hello all! Im new onto this site, looking for tips, tricks, and advice on having a Yorkie..I recently got surprised with mine, Ziggy, and he's 8 months old...I've been having him for almost two weeks now & he's a sweetie, except for one thing- he's afraid of everything!! The slightest sound, etc, will send him running into the nearest corner, under my leg (if Im sitting), or on my foot (if Im standing)...I don't know if he was isolated away from the other dogs at the breeder's place (I hope not) or is this Zig's way of getting used to us here..We try to play with him & offer treats and things, but he just sits there and/or looks like a deer in headlights  ... I am open to any/all kinds of advice..Help!! :love:Joanna F. & Ziggy.:aimeeyork |
Hello, welcome to YorkieTalk. I also have a somewhat skittish Yorkie but she is getting a lot better. My first suggestion would be get him socialized a little by taking him with you places for example SophieKate goes with me to places that are dog friendly (Lowes and Petco are good examples), I always keep her either in her sling or put her in the cart. Most important thing is to make him feel confident about new things, if he is scared do not comfort him (I know this is the hard part). For example if SophieKate was afraid of a person I would take her over to the person and explain to them how to approach her (get down to her level, she is short they are tall). If a person wants to pet SophieKate I always ask them to let her smell their hand first. It's a slow process but over the last 1.5 years I see a new dog, different from the shy little girl I originally got. Good luck and I am sure others can offer good advice. |
Another suggestion is maybe enroll in a puppy training class with him, Petco offers a series of free classes that are very helpful. |
Congratulations on your new baby and welcome to YT. Everyone is super nice and helpful. I wish I had advice for you but I too am new and am still waiting to go pick up my baby. |
Hi Joanna and Ziggy :wavey: We're fairly new here, too. We just got Zoe in November. She can be a bit skittish, too. And, we're just over here north of Dallas in Allen. Hi to another Texas yorkie! |
Taking him places will help build his confidence. Do not force let him explore and reward for doing it. Sounds like he just needs a little time. Getting him around things will help him come out of his shell for sure Have patience you will loving owning a yorkie they are such great dogs :) |
Hi and Welcome to YT. It takes a little time for them to get used to things. I know Zoe, our little shorkie was afraid of her own shadow when I got her but after awhile she came out of her shell. We really didn't do anything much except show her lots of love and eventually she came around. Zach, our yorkie however has been a crazy dog since we got him the only thing he's afraid of is going down the basement steps and the vaccum cleaner. Now we have Oliver our little shih tzu. He's 10 weeks old. He was a bit skittish but that lasted one day. |
I don't have any advise for you, but I wanted to welcome you and Ziggy to YT! You will find alot of helpful and great advise here. |
Hi and welcome to YT. Puppy class and socialization should help him come out of his shell. |
Welcome to YT. I know your going to get great advice here and I'm in agreement about taking Ziggy to puppy obedience classes. Also take him everywhere with you and let kids of all ages and adults pet him. Socialize, socialize, socialize and walks every day. He will soon outgrow his fear. |
Welcome to YT! Post pics of your baby when you get a chance! |
Dinky was only 5 months when we got him, but he was so timid that I was worried. He was afraid of my husband, the driveway, even some toys. We tried to expose him to any new experience we could. He worried his way through all of them, but bit by bit he has opened up. It is very important not to croon to him and comfort him. He needs to know that you know when there is nothing to fear. He will be one year on about 3 weeks, and he is still pretty mild mannered, a momma's boy ( but he loves Dad now too), and always doubtful when meeting new people. So hang in there and expect it be go slow going. Good luck! |
