Pees here, poops there We are pee pad training our 4 month old, male yorkie, Brando. It has got to the point where he will go to the pad on his own to pee, but will not poop on it. He usually ends up pooping elsewhere in the room, with a couple of exceptions: Exception 1: We have a doggie litter box with a pad in it. First thing in the morning, he will poop in there, but ONLY if I am right there with him to make sure he stays in the box. (He pees on the pad that lays outside the box) Exception 2: We have to put him in our bathroom while we are at work. We put a pee pad down where he seems to do his peeing, and he will pee there. He poops behind the toilet. We put another pad down next to the toilet, but he wont poop on it. Any thoughts on getting him to poop on the pads? |
Welcome to YorkieTalk. :) Congratulations on your new pup. In the morning when Brando poops on the pad, praise him profusely for his accomplishment and give him a small treat (I use kibble to train), "Good boy Brando! Good poopies on the pad!" Then show him how you dispose of the poop right away. My boys seem to appreciate that part of the process, probably because dogs do not like their living areas soiled, especially with poop. The second part, pooping behind the toilet when he is home alone, that will likely improve with age when Brando is able to better control when he does his business. He will probably wait until you are home from work to poop. For now, you could try having him watch you move the poop to the pad and tell him, "poop here, on the pad," and then dispose of it. Giving him positive reinforcement and instruction should help improve his habits. I hope this helps. |
