Tail Docking - Urgent Have just obtained 18 week old yorkie. Breeder wants to have her tail docked next Monday as it was not done at birth. Just learned this may be cruel and unusual at her age. Any help will be appreciated. |
I think the only time you are supposed to have that done is right after they are born. Like no later than 3 days after they are born. A breeder on here can tell you for sure though. |
[SIZE=3]NO!NO!NO! At that age the procedure is an orthopedic one and must be performed by a good vet!! My latest girl, Cara Mia, has a full tail. She was too tiny at the normal age of docking, so she has a funny looking tail that droops at the end if she is not on alert or running. Leave that baby's tail alone unless you can convince your vet to do it when the dog is spayed.. |
They usually do this within 2 or 3 days of the birth. I would say NO WAY if it were my kid! |
DO you want the tail docked? I know that when we got our brittany spainel she was about 8 weeks and didn't have her tail docked. We waited until she was almost full grown and then she had it done while under anesthesia. Maybe if it is important to you then you can have it done when he gets neutered. Just a thought. A breeder will hopefully have a more concrete answer! Hannah |
Did the breeder say why it wasn't docked when it was born or soon thereafter??? My Bitsy has a long tail and it is beautiful! As well as some other YT members here :) I personally would leave it alone unless it is going to be a show dog. |
That makes absolutely no sense. She is the breeder.....she knows it had to have been done between 3-5 days after birth. I honestly am just shaking my head. What did she possibly say her reasoning is for this "late" decision? Also, if you put a deposit down on her and signed an agreement, this is YOUR dog and YOUR decision. Not only that, a vet won't just dock a tail on a Yorkie because you want it done. Let us know what happens. |
aww poor thing. its your dog now isnt it? so its your choice!! leave it on, they look so cute that way ..look at Crunchy's! |
i agree with everyone else our vet said no later then 3 days . my friend just had puppies today inwich i helped deliver and im taking them to the vet because she had to work and the vet will not do it after 3 days and hes a reputable vet around here. i would leave the tail alone. |
I know there are somevets that will do them up to the age of 3 months. But they have to put them under and at that age their tail has growed a lot and its hard to keep the stitches in. |
I just remembered when I had my pups done at 5 days and they cried and cried and screamed for 24 hours after it was done....I can't imagine having something like that done at this age....that would be considered surgery....if it were my dog I would keep the long tail...(If i ever decided to breed zoe again I will not have the tail docking on the pups...its just too sad) |
There is no reason in my opinion to EVER dock a dog's tail and it has been outlawed as inhumane in many countries, but unfortunately the yorkie breed standard as set forth by the YTCA requires a docked tail. In my opinion it is an archaic part of the standard that needs to be removed. These dogs have beautiful tails when they are left alone. I would never understand docking a tail unless it is a show dog and even then, I think it's a shame. :( |
this is one thing that gets my goat, as everyone knows the yorkshire terrier comes from yorkshire uk and the reason the tails where docked was to stop the farmers pulling them out of rabbit holes by there tail, were many times the tail would get damaged and have to be removed, as the years went on and the yorkie got smaller the tails were still docked, until a few years ago when the uk and some other countries banned it, so the show breed HAS to have its tail to be shown. my personal opinion is to leave it alone and let it grow, this is my rosie with her feathery tail i think its the best. http://img374.imageshack.us/img374/6...500x3759eb.jpg |
I love a yorkie w/ a full tail! Wendy~ Your Rosie had a gorgeous long tail! :D |
I have to admit it takes a bit of getting used to because all the yorkies I have ever seen, until recently, had docked tails. But, now I am on the side of doing what is natural. Docking just seems like the wrong thing to do. |
