very thin coat? Can anybody tell me why my little girls coat is very thin? (16weeks) compared to my friends little girl (same age), they look like two different dogs. From mine with her pointy nose and thin coat (especially thin on her front legs) and my friends with her rounded almost flat face and very thick coat? i am feeding her nothing but the best (personally), Royal Canian. Anybody notice this similarities in their babies? it seems to me that Yorkies look very different from one to another compared to other breeds that commonly look the same. Thanks for the feedback. |
Coat differences are a matter of genetics and breeding. While there is a standard, "ideal", for Yorkie coats, amongst the pet population of Yorkies there is a wide variation of coat texture and thickness. There are silk coats, cotton coats, and modifieds that are a combination of the two. At your pup's age, one can only make an educated guess how her coat will develop. A thinner coat as a pup can develop into the most beautiful adult coat. Looking at the parents and grandparents of the pup is a good indication for what kind of coat she will ultimately have. |
A lot of people prefer that cotton coat; but I think the thin coats usually look shinier and better longer; just my opinion. But my Lucy has a pointed noise and thin hair if it's any consolation! |
One of my pups has thin/sparse hair. Both parents and both sets of grandparents, et al., all have beautiful silky coats...so I'm hoping it's one of those things that as an adult she'll have beautiful hair like her relatives. She is long legged too, making all that sparse hair on her legs look even sparser. Her brothers have lush, lush hair. Go figure. |
You never know with thin hair My little one that is 8 mos old also has thin hair. The little girl I lost this summer had thin hair, not quite this thin, when she was young, but by the time she was 2 she had an absolute beautiful long, thick silky coat. I think a silky coat just takes a little longer. My other little girl has a super thick cotton coat, it's a lot of work, more than the silky coat was. I don't know with all coats, but the silky is easier because it IS thinner. The cotton coat is so thick and has to be trimmed often or it's a nightmare. |

I prefer Natural Balance small breed Ultra and mis in Orijen which is quite high protein but hte two together seems to work. |
Can you post a pic...? It takes 3 factors to get a good coat..genes, diet, care... Some Yorkies have thin coats and never grow a full one, others start with a thinner type silk and take a bit of time...ideally I want a thick silk..not a thin silk... |
Thin is in I have 2 girls each a little over a year. The one with the thin coat is silky and the color is breaking beautifully. The other is thick, thick thick cottony grows like weeds, is staying dark, so far and is the hardest to care for. |
