Floppy Ears - Your experiences So I've been researching a bit, and I'm finding that our dogs ears should be up from 3-6 months. I'm also aware that some ears will never come up, but sometimes taping works. Misha is 3 months now and only one of her ears are maaaaayyybe trying to stand up. I'd like to get them standing, and have asked the breeder if her parents had floppy ears. She told me that they should come up any day now, but didn't respond about the parents :questione I got her at 8 weeks, and am now thinking about taping, since I haven't seen any real progress. Have any of you had to tape? Did it work? At about what age did you tape? What kind of tape did you use? |
I can't tell without seeing them. Is there any "lift" at all in the ears like they are trying to come up? Have you clipped the hair off the back of the ears and trimmed the hair off the tips? Keeping the weight of the hair off the ears for just a little bit often helps the ears go up on their own. I would try this first before resorting to taping. If you haven't trimmed the hair you can use a mustashe trimmer to do it or take her to a groomer - they should be willing to trim the hair off her ears for a minimal cost and may even show you how to do it yourself. Good luck, Teresa |
Zach looks like a donkey his ears are so big. He is 9 months old now. When we first got him I thought he would grow into his big ears, but I think his ears grew while he was growing because they are still big. From the time we got him, at 14 weeks his ears stood up never flopped. Sometimes when he's tired one ear might flop over but very seldom. My Shorkie (shih tzu yorkie) has floppy ears but thats from her shih tzu side. |
this picture: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/pic...ctureid=102847 is about the best i have right now that you can see her ears. the one on her right side SEEMS like it's trying to come up. That picture was taken over the weekend, so it's very recent. It is the slightest bit higher than the left one. These are after I shaved her ears too. I actually gave her a piece of this chicken jerky she LOVES (i can be replaced with jerky - doesn't even notice me leave in the morning when i give her some of that) and used some shaving cream and my razor. I would say it may have helped, but I'd like to hear everyone's opinions if it would be worth trying taping before it's too late. |

I have a 17 week old boy and his ears where not standing when I got him at 12 weeks... and I like the ears standing...so I shaved all the hair off both ears cause the hair weighs them down and I taped his ears up...its took about 3 weeks of taping and they are now up standing on there own...YAY!!!:D. What I did is shave all hair off the ear and I taped them up...I would keep the tape on for 3 days, take it off and leave them alone for 1 day..if the ears were standing I wouldn't retape until they dropped than I would retape for another 3 days...until they were standing on they own...its been about 2 weeks now with no taping and his ears are up...there are a few sites on the internet that I used that shows you how to tape them up I will go look and see if I can find them for ya.:) |
Here is the site I used to tape my boys ears up...good luck..just remember it may take a few weeks to get them standing. Jon-An's Yorkshire Terriers (How to train Yorkies ears to stand) |
I'm not sure if my breeder taped Oliver's ears, but they were standing when I got him at 10 weeks old. I must admit though, I kind of like the floppy ears! :p |
I got my Yorkie when he was 13 weeks. His ears flopped over which I thought was so cute. Before I took him home, the breeder trimmed the hair from his ears for me. I trimmed a little from the edges just once since I've had him. He is now 21 weeks and his ears are almost standing all the way up, just the tip is flopped over. I didn't do anything other than the trim that one time, I guess some just go up on their own. I wouldn't even care if his didn't go all the way up because I think they are cute flopped down just a little! |
4 Attachment(s) Jackson's ears stood up around 4 1/2 months old. He went to the groomer and she shaved the tips of them and up they went! Lol. I was almost hoping they'd stay floppy, but I love them up too of course. :) First pic is 9 weeks old. Second pic is after groomer at 4 1/2 months old. Third pic is when they stood up by themselves! And fourth pics is now at 2yrs old. :) |
We taped ours at 12 weeks the day we got her. The breeder showed us how to tape and it took about 5 weeks and they were up. Like the others said ; keep the hair clipped on the ears. |

I would tape her ears. Leave the tape 3 days...remove and if they aren't standing....wait a day and re-tape. |
This thread will help you with taping the ears: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...tml#post295488 |
Mambo's ears were down when we got him. I clipped the hair off the tips and the next day they were up! |
