cars scare him Hello to all, from new member. When I take my little one out for a walk on a lead. When he hears or sees a car coming he stops dead in his tracks, and will not move untill car has gone.We dont want to pull him,as this could put him off walking on a lead. He is 5 months old.Any suggestions, thank you for any help given |
welcome to yt, just keep walkin him every day, its a big world he has to get used to, i would imagine if we were that small we wud be scared to:D if he stops thats ok, let him take his time, he will get used to it in the end, walk him on the inside of the footpath, but he will get used to it the more he is out, wud like to see pic of ur baby:D |
How long have you been walking him? Could be he is just not used to it yet. |
Welcome to YorkieTalk. :) I agree with the posts above, over time your pup will get used to the cars. Keep walking, exude confidence, and talk to your pup with an upbeat, cheerful tone to encourage him to keep moving along and not worry about the cars. You can also try treats or a great squeaky toy. Choose a toy that you reserve for walks only, to make it extra appealing. |
My little guy does the same thing. He is a year old. I think in time he will get over it. In the meanwhile, we stop and watch the cars go by!:) |
I had the same problem with Max for a little while. When cars pass by I would give him treats. The cars don't seem to bother him as much but I know he still think they may be a little scary. |
He's used to being safe inside where it has a roof and its quiet, outside, it's big and open and cars are big, noisy monsters coming too close to him. Keep socializing him and talk soothingly to him as the cars pass, telling him its ok. Soon, he might never fully get used to is, but he won't be as afraid. Good walking. |
If you walk him more often he will get used to the cars. To be honest I think its a little bit good that they be fearful of cars. He wont run out in front of one if he gets loose. I wish My cat Sunny had been more fearful of them. He ran out in front of one and was hit and killed. So its not necessarily a bad thing |
Actually, when I walk Toby when a car starts to go by, I tell Toby to stay. Is that wrong? I'd rather he stand still when cars go by so he doesn't attempt running after the cars. He's not afraid of cars going by and keeps walking but I'm the one that tells him to stay and once the car goes by I tell him good boy and continue walking. |
My dog is the same age and does the exact same thing. We haven't been able to go on a walk yet because of that. He does fine in the house on a leash. I'm glad you posted this because I was going to post the same thing and now I can read other's responses and get some ideas too! |
Dinky was terrified of everything outside. We got him at 4 1/2 months. At first he wouldn't even walk on a leash. We just kept taking him out and taking him out. He would stop and stare and stare at cars, especially bigger cars, trucks, vans. Sprinklers freaked him out. After he did start walking, it was obvious he was mostly interested in getting back to the house and safely inside. Little by little, he started to like it. Now he LOVES it, but it took about 6 weeks before he really liked to be outside. There were setbacks: mean dogs, for instance. It did help that this was during the summer, and, at first, when he stopped, we would just scoop him up and carry him for a while. It was worth it, he walks like a champ now. Just keep at it! |
Lucky you don't walk near a busy road otherwise you wont get far, I'm sure your baby will get over it, when a car is coming distract him with a treat or toy etc so he doesn't notice the car. My boy comes to work with me at the car workshop so he has no fear, wish he did really fot safety reasons. |
