The dog was on a leash and taking a walk. Just goes to show that the big birds aren't always scared off by humans. We have had hawks and black vultures (the kind that attack their prey) circle low over us on walks. Glad the little chihuahua survived. |
Sigh, I wish we could all just get along. Do the rest of you check the sky and nearby trees for owls and hawks before you let your little ones outside like I do? I live in fear of one of them being carried off! A neighbor said we have to be careful of snake bites here too. No poisonous ones around here that I know of but I guess the bites can get infected or if they get bit on the face it can cause quite a bit of damage. |
gators I live in south Miami.. we are on a small lake.. gators have been spotted. The gators are small-- but than again my Remy is small!! We have a fence, but she can get under if she tries. She tries... one day my husband went out to bbq and Remy follower him out and then I heard him yelling for her. OMG... I ran out and she was in the water!!!!!! I freaked!!!!!!!! I am not sure how I got over the fence and grabed her but I did. My dh was laughing and said I over reacted because the gator wasn't even in the lake at the time. I was not happy... dinner was very quite:mad: so far I have not worried about the sky... |
Mu husband was up early one morning at 4:30 A around Christmas and heard our next door neighbor screaming. He ran outside and she told him she let her little Yorkie (Rudy) outside to go potty and was watching him from inside the back porch. She spotted a shadow coming out of the woods and it was a coyote. The coyote grabbed Rudy and started running back into the woods. Luckily because it was close to Christmas Rudy was dressed in a Santa sweater and the coyote didn't get a good grip on rudy. When the neighbor yelled, the coyote dropped Rudy from it's mouth and ran. Rudy thankfully wasn't hurt but it makes you wonder what wildlife is watching you as you go in and out of your house. |
So far I haven't ever seen any dangerous birds of animals around where I live. The only this we have here are pigeons and sea gulls and they only poop all over the cars, but I do watch when I let my dogs out in the back even though they both go out with my two basset hounds who are both 55 lbs each and we have a 7 foot locked fence around the house. |

I would recommend never ever leaving a Yorkie out of your sight and control. Remember, a hawk or an owl uses the force of their landing on the animal to break it's back as well as stick it with their talons. The Chihuahua was very lucky, I wouldn't take the chance. |
We have all of them here in Arkansas!! Owls, hawks, and coyotes! I never let Rosie out by herself. The owls are always around at night. They are freaky little creatures! When I hear them, I run and grab Rosie to come in. I am so afraid they will get her. So, she just has to go out with me. I did not know that they were not that afraid of humans. I thought we would scare them off. Now knowing this is really scary!!!!!!!:eek: |
This is one of my biggest fears. I have lots of large birds of prey where I live, even owls at night. I never let the yorkies out at night and only under close supervision during the day and always with Daisy (our 85lb border collie mix). I've still had a few try to swoop down but Daisy loves to try to get them so she scares them off but I still don't like the odds so I end up not letting them out very much. |
We know all to well about owls . We had one that would sit on top of our purple martin houses and just wait. It was almost like he was waiting for us to take her out. We always stay out with her especially at night. This is so sad about this little one . |
OMG my biggest fear here too. We have owls and hawks. I used to let mine out at dark but not after I seen the owl swoop down in my front yard one night. I think he come down cause he heard the babies on the porch. That sucker was huge too. A couple of mornings later he was on the fence and we shoed him away. But I still hear the hooting outside so I know he is still there. I would totally die if anything got my Jack or Josie. |
That is SOOOO scary! I saw a fox in our yard once during the day (I think it was rabid) and it freaked me out. I don't have a fence so I walk Jackson on the leash at night (we live on 3 acres so there's a lot of wildlife).... but it still freaks me out, even though I'm out there with him. Whenever I hear noises in the bushes or trees, I run inside! hahaha! |
This is one of my biggest fears as well. One day while Sadie was sitting on the back of our sofa looking outside.A large hawk swooped down to the window landing in the bush outside the window. It was tryng to get at her with its talons while leaning back on the bush. I happen to be standing right there.I tapped on the window thinking it would fly away. Nope, is stayed there tryng to get her through the window. Then it flew away. That was scary. I live in a development with a lot of trees. A bald eagle nest is at the back of our lot. Then last summer around 5 am, I got up to let the 6 dogs out to potty. I was standing right in the middle of the back yard, from the trees and brush a raccoon came running up to the fence trying to get at the dogs. My goodness I had the hardest time trying to pick up all 6 and get them in the house while all 6 were running around barking and trying to get the raccoon. That is so scary. |
this always terrifies me. i have mine on leash anytime i'm out in open areas. we have a small fenced yard with neighbors all around and lots of bigger dogs always out in their yards and no trees in my yard at all. i haven't had to worry about hawks and owls yet, but i'm cautious and always SCREAMING at dh to never let them out when he's not able to watch them the WHOLE TIME. he does this in the morning and goes to use the bathroom leaving them alone outside...i HATE that he won't listen, i need to make him read these horror stories. |
