Is your Yorkie a good traveler? Mine sure isn't! He doesn't mind the crate at all and doesn't make a sound, but every time I take him in the car, even just to the vet, he will throw up. I took him on a 3 hour car trip this weekend and he threw up, just like I knew he would so no big deal. However....the entire weekend we were gone he had diarrhea. I brought water from home and his normal usual food so all I can think of was that he has a nervous stomach or something. We got home yesterday and he has been perfectly fine. He even acted fine on the trip, except for the diarrhea. He also had a bout of diarrhea about 2 weeks ago. Took him to the vet and he did not have Parvo and they also checked his stool and it was fine, so I don't think he is sick. Anyone else experience anything like this with their Yorkie? |
Ahhh, poor thing. It very well could be anxiety. What about taking time to slowly introduce him back to the car. Make the car not moving a happy place, etc, then slowly increase it. If he's just getting car sick, maybe there is something like a natural doggie gravol that you can give to settle his tummy. I wouldn't know, I've been fortunate that Harley loves to travel. he's done 3-4 hour car rides and 2 hour plane rides successfully. Good luck |
One of my yorkies gets so nervous when shes in the car that she vomits. The other one does fine. |
Peanut and Megan (Moo-Moo) travel just fine but my Maddie Jo (Panda) gets nervous and drooly when she even thinks she has to get in the car. We have to use Benadryl for her when we travel and she still hides under the cushion in her bed...all you see for most of the trip is her nose. We've been taking them on short drives to get her used to the car and she was doing so well on her last trip...I decided to turn around and tell her she was doing great. But...when I turned and said "Maddie Jo, how ya doin'?" her reply was "Blek" and she puked all over her seat cover...my poor baby girl! |
My yorkie, Addyson use to throw up everytime she was put in a vehicle. It did not matter if the trip was short or long. I tried several different things, but nothing worked. I finally purchased a pet car seat which hangs from the headrest in the back sit, which puts her high enough to be able to see out. I also put a milk carton up under the car seat so it would be completely stable. This alone did not work, she still threw up, but not as much. I started giving her some nutri-cal about thirty minutes before I put her in her car seat. This worked like a charm. She now travels 400 miles at one time without throwing up. She still will not completely relax, and she still pants most of the time, but she does not throw up. I still have my fingers crossed that one day she will relax and enjoy the ride. |
It sounds like it is caused from stress/anxiety. Stress can upset their whole system. All of my furkids travel great except one. They will all just lay down and go to sleep and they really enjoy being in the car and they never get sick no matter how long the journey is and they stay very calm and relaxed. Now my one that doesn't do as good (Hershey) does get car sick no matter how short the distance. Just 5 minutes down the road and he would get sick. He didn't seem stressed as he would just lay there but in the end this is what was causing him to throw up. Anytime there is another dog traveling with him no matter how long the trip is he doesn't get sick. We took him and two others on a 13 hour trip and he didn't get sick once. Anytime he travels just by himself he gets sick. So he is stressed when he has to travel by himself but is relaxed when traveling with another dog. Kinda weird if you ask me but we have tested it out several times with the same results each time. |
It's not so much the throwing up that bothers me, but the fact that he had diarrhea the entire weekend we were gone. Then as soon as I get him back home he is fine! That was weird to me. |
All of mine love to travel. |
Bruce does not do well in a crate or carrier in the car. So we got him a lookout instead and he rides well in that. He is great in his carrier on flights under 6 hours, so long as I take him to the bathroom and let him out to pee on a pad like once. We once flew directly from Seattle to Amsterdam, which was 12 hours, and he got restless in his carrier but overall did well without sedation and just a few trips up to the bathroom. |
He's just a baby and you've had him just a little over a month. He may be experiencing motion sickness as well as the stress of the trip. He should outgrow it. It's not uncommon for them to throw up. The diarrhea is not that common for traveling. I would get him a puppy seat, so he'll be safe, too. Usually, they don't get sick, as long as they can see out. I hope things improve. If not, you might want to consider using Rescue Remedy for pets. It's completely natural. |
My don't really like car rides. Remy want to sit on my neck, Baily pants like a steam engine, Sammy does ok. I have a car seat for Remy-- buckle her in!! The other two I have hook ups to the seat belts (they are bigger). They act "crazy" when we make "pit" stops-- I keep the leashes on even in the car because I am so afraid one of them will "bolt" and in a strange place with traffic that would not be good. |
Adjusting to a new home is very difficult on puppies, then car rides on top of it all, to new places again can be very difficult on them, and yes, diarrhea is very much part of them being traumatized with so much to take in. Take things slow, go on short rides often, and maybe you be in the back with him while someone else drives, just to reassure him that it's ok. |
Rio from day one has been so stressed in any car ride, short or long. She shakes and pants but luckily she doesn't vomit. We tried her in the crate, on my lap, in a car seat - nothing works. We've found she is the least stressed inside her crate, so that's where we usually place her now. Bullet from day one has been easy breezy - he just lies down and takes a nap. He's fine outside of his crate but for safety reasons we keep him in his crate in the car as well. I think personality comes into play in so many situations - it's amazing how different every dog reacts to situations no matter how much you try to do the same thing with both. |
Fortunately my 2 have become good travelers. Hot Rod always has been but poor Maggie May threw up for the the entire first year we had her. Even for the 6 mile trip to the vet. You could just see her little face turn and sure enough, she would throw up. She's all better now as she discovered that if the looks out the window she's does fine. It's so funny she will stand on the side of her snoozer car seat to look out the windows. |
I am blessed that all six of mine travel well. We go to Dallas every other month which is an 11-12 hr car ride one way and all of them sleep almost all the way down and back with one stop. No motion sickness from anybody. And... the little ones hold their pee the whole way, it is amazing. I know I'm blessed, I've seen to many post about the throw ups, the drools and the all the other problems. I especially going in an RV. Then they really have a ball. |
Lily did the exact same thing! I always put her in her crate when we traveled and she would always throw up or poop (or both). One day, I "forgot" to bring the crate and just let her run around the car like Tristan does. She wasn't sure what to do at first so she just sat in my lap. After she saw Tristan running around and sticking his face out the window, she wanted to do that too! Now she never throws up or poops & she looks forward to going out. |
We are also blessed, Nana911. Our Toto is a wonderful little traveler!:thumbup: When we bought her at 16 weeks we brought her home, stayed a few days and left on a trip of about 2500 miles and she loved it! She doesn't care whether it's a car, truck, motorhome or plane ... she is happy! She quickly adapts to any situation and as long as she is near us, anywhere is fine with her. ;) |
I have one that LOVES to ride. But poor Max gets sick...unless I put on his life vest then he knows it's boating time! Just wish I could do that all the time I took him out but don't think that would be a good idea. He would be heart broken if he didn't go boating. |
The minute you says lets go for a ride, Pixie is at the door jumping up and down to make sure that you take her along. The longest ride she has had is 3 hours and she did very well. Pixie is a great traveler in the car. |
Both my girls travel well in the car. we have a car seat and we buckle them in and they are great. I have only flown once with Pixie bc she can go in the cabin with me and she did alright. I won't fly with Daisy bc of the weight restrictions and she would have to go with baggage and I would NEVER do that to her. |
Zoe loves the car as long as you hold her in your lap put her in a carrier and it's vomit city. Zach doesn't like the car at all and he usually gets car sick. Oliver is just a baby and he's only been in the car twice both times he did okay. Now my two bassets are another story. When we first got them they wouldn't get into the car and we had to carry thim in 25 lbs each. Now they tolerate the car I'm not sure if they like it or not but at least we don't have to carry them anymore they are both 55 lbs each. |
Veruca is (1 year, 4 lbs) a wonderful traveler. We are super super lucky! When you even pick up her around town bag - she jumps up and tries to hop into the top of it... She sleeps in her bag in the car if she is by herself or sticks her paws on the edge and her head out the convertible (if she's in her harness and someone is in the passenger seat holding her). On an airplane, she sleeps the entire flight without a peep (she has flown 9 times now). I give her some Nutrical on takeoff and touchdown to "pop" her ears. Plus the TSA are always nicer when we travel with Veruca. She likes to go to new places and she LOVES her carriers, they're her safe spaces when we go places. |
Gilmore will throw up every single time we are in the car if the ride is longer than 5 minutes. It doesn't matter if he is in his crate or on my lap. Skittles doesn't puke but will shake and cry the entire time. Needless to say we never take them in the car unless we have to. |
Jackson's a pretty good traveler. He gets nervous at first when we first get in the car now because we got into an accident where my car was totaled a few months back. Ever since, he's very cautious about getting into a car. But after a few minutes, he settles down into seat and enjoys it. He's a great traveler in a sense that he loves to explore new places and see new things... I dogsit a lot so he always goes with me when I sleep at others homes and loves it! He's gone on vacation with me a few times too and highly enjoys it. |
Levi is a wonderful traveler. He is well-behaved in the car, stays in his car seat and looks out the window or takes a nap. He gets so excited when he realizes we are going on a car ride. :). He loves going new places and has never really seemed disturbed if we spend the night somewhere new. The only problem I have ever run into is hesitance eating in new places, but he seems to have outgrown that. I haven't flown with him yet, but am exploring the possibility. I am a little nervous that he would cry/whine/bark the whole plane ride in a carrier...but I guess I won't know until we give it a try! |
Pixie has no car problems, but Bruno throws up every time, that’s why he is scared whenever we have to go somewhere. But last Saturday we discovered something amazing: my husband was holding Bruno in his arms, but he was so agitated so he left him on the floor, at his feet, on a blanket. And for the first time Bruno slept in the car and didn’t throw up. Now we know next time we will get him in the car will be at our feet on a blanket J |
Rosie is a great traveler. We never have any problems with her. She has gone on very long trips with us and does fine. Usually, she sleeps most of the way. |
Baby Bear loves riding in the car, in fact he will jump in the front seat by himself if you even open the car door in the garage. The longest we drove with him is about 250 miles, and he slept most of the time. |
Mine do not mind traveling in the car as long as they can see me and lick my hand some. My little girl did get car sick bad everytime we were in the car for any amount of time. She seems to have outgrown it and I could not be happier. I wanted to be able to take her places but felt bad because she got so ill. Now she just sits back and relaxes. |
