Poopy breath My little Mia has breath like she ate poop. I have been watching her closely and when she poops she walks away from it so I don't think she is eating it. My question is, can their stomach have an intestinal tract that may cause her butt smell to come out her mouth? Does anyone know what I could give/feed her to change the stomach gases. She did just have her teeth cleaned about 3 months ago and now only has 6 teeth left so I don't think it is rotten teeth smell. She is 4 1/2 years old. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you |
Well 6 teeth left at four years old is not a good sign. Do you do anything between cleanings to help reduce tartar? Yorkies are notorious for making tartar, and tartar can cause bad breath. If tartar builds up it goes under the gums, and can cause food to grow in pockets, which also stinks because it's rotting food. There are several things you can do to reduce tartar build-up, and I recommend doing more than one thing. For Joey we use a specially formulated food that says reduces tartar build-up, along with that we use Petzlife, and it is sprayed on teeth and it's suppose to soften tartar, and you can brush it away at a later time. We also use bully sticks and I think hard sticks can "scrape" away tartar. Of course we also brush his teeth, and at his 4-year check-up his vet says there is minimal tartar on his teeth and he doesn't even need a cleaning yet. My advice would be to implement some type of cleaning program to save remaining teeth and to keep gums healthy. Digestive issues can also cause bad breath; you might want to look at a food change as well, but you definitely have some dental issues going on that need to be addressed. |
She only has 6 teeth left and she's just 4?!?! It sounds like she has had some pretty severe decay (given the number of teeth that have been removed) so, yes, her teeth could definitely still be causing her problems. Poor baby. Are you brushing them? What kind of oral hygiene are you doing at home? |

i would love to know the actual reason for this to! welcome to yorkie talk btw!! |
I am wondering what type of food is being fed too. |
I call Princess 'poopy breath'. I try to brush their teeth about 3 x's a week & that smell is not there sometimes. It's almost like she burps or the smell is coming from somewhere else, like the op mentioned maybe intestinal gas? The strange thing is, when I open her mouth & smell it, the poop smell is not there, but when she kisses me, I can smell it. The smell is different from icky doggy breath, it actually smells like poop like she just ate it. I know for sure she doesn't eat poop. Her teeth are white, except for a little tartar build up on her back molars. Although she does seem to have more teeth in the back...maybe they didn't remove all her puppy teeth? Feb is 'Dental' month @ our vet's, so they're all going to have their teeth checked/cleaned. I'll find out then if she has any rotten teeth going on. She's only 2, I doubt it. Last time she had a check up, our vet didn't seem concerned of her poopy breath...hate it when they don't show concern & don't give me answers.:( I feed mine Wellness Core, they love it & seem to be doing great on it. They were on Acana Grasslands, but I switched recently bc my local pet store didn't carry it...thinking of switching back, not sure. This food thing has me completely lost too & is a whole different matter. |
Did her breath get worse, suddenly? Or has it always smelled like this? If it is a recent change, and you haven't changed her food or anything, and she isn't eating her own poopy, I think a visit to the vet for a check up would be a good idea. There are other things that can make their breath stink that aren't caused by the teeth or poopy eating. Best to do a work up and make sure she doesn't have anything else going on, once you find the cause, you can work on a solution with your vet :) |
My Sadie has the same problem. She has had the problem from day one. I have taken her to the vet. Today I had her teeth cleaned and it helped a tiny bit. I was not thinking it would take care of the problem because she had it when she had her baby teeth and her new ones came in . The vet said it is probably reflux. The vet had her on previcid as a puppy because she and Jackie both had refux as puppies. Jackie out grew it but Sadie has not. Her teeth are like little pearls, but stinky. I do not care she can give me all those stinky kisses she wants. I love every one. My Dad, said one day. My her breath smells. I said to him I know,I do not know why it is so bad, she said in a joking way, I know why,It is because her hiney is so close to her mouth. Of course he was joking. I have to take her back to the vet now that she is older to see what the correct dose is now for her. It helped a lot before. She was taking a half of a pill at that time. |
