Determinig size? I read that you can estimate adult size by weighing and measuring a 12 or 13 week old puppy and multiplying x 2. Is this correct? Is it fairly accurate? I'm new to this. Just got my first puppy. She is almost 13 weeks. She is 7 inches at the shoulder and weighs 3 lbs 12 oz. Do you think this means she'll go over the 7 pound standard? |
The sire is very petite but the dam is a bit larger. If this helps. |
When we got Zach he was 14 weeks old and weighed 3 1/2 pounds. He is now 9 months old and weighs 6 1/2 lbs so I don't know if that's true or not. Of course that was a couple of weeks ago he might have gained a half a pound which would make it true. All I know is that he has legs like a ballerina, long and skinny. |
I found this info from admin post very helpful and interesting. I learn so much on YT! Here is the link: Toy Breed Puppy Growth Chart (created by YT member feminvstr, who's Web site you may visit at Yorkie breeder site: AKC Yorkshire Terrier and yorkie puppies - Yorkie Passion) |
I'm really hoping she'll stay within the breed standard. |

Sorry, think I did that wrong! Just started using an Apple computer and not too familiar yet! Try this one: For the full puppy growth chart, please go to the link at feminvstr's site here: Yorkshire Terrier Puppy Growth/Weight Chart |
There is no way to know for sure until she's an adult. When it comes down to it, you should love her no matter her size! |

It really depends, but it does seem that multiplying the 12 week weight by 2 is fairly accurate. Jackson was 6lbs at 12 weeks old and weighed 12lbs at 1 year old, though he did gain a bit of weight (but still at a healthy size) after 1 year and is now 15-16lbs. |
Pippin weighed about one pound when she was 12 weeks old. She just turned 8 months old this week and now weighs 6+ pounds. So no, that method is not always accurate. :) Actually, now that I think about it, it hasn't worked on any of my babies. |
I understand your wish to have a breed standard or small baby. But just thought I would share this with you.. I have had 4 yorkies. I love/loved each one no matter what size or hair type or build. I am sure you will too. I have found that both my larger ones, 6 1/2#'s & 10#'s were so much healthier than the two smaller ones. (4 1/2# & 5 #'s) Maybe a coincidence? I don't know, just my experience. Each one was/is a delight and special. I do tend to spoil them all, but the smaller are always harder for me to train! |
Thank you for the info and the comments. I just did an estimate. If correct she will be around 7.5 pounds. |
PS. I adore her! :-) |
When I got my babies they ended up 2 lbs heavier than their mom. The 2 breeders I got the babies from I met the parents and all but they ended up being 7 & 8 lbs... But my vet also said I was smart to not go for the tiny's cause they have more health problems. I was shocked at first because totally unexpected because the parents were smaller but would change the lil' hams for anything.. boy to they have a hold on my heart. |
