How do you cut a yorkies hair? Alright, it's official.. I'm fed up with Harleys fondness of burrs.. I think it's time I get rid of some of that extra fuz.. lol I've been fighting the urge to get his hair cut bc it's getting colder but I know in reality his hair the length it is doesn't make hardly any difference anyway. But I don't want to take him to a groomer anymore, atleast not until I can find one I can really trust and who will let me stay with him while he gets his hair cut. So, here's the question.. How do you cut a yorkies hair? I've been told that it's extremely hard to do bc it's so fine and so much like human hair. So do I use scissors and slowly snip snip it away until he looks half decent? Use clippers? Buzzers? (we have one of those we use to cut my little brothers hair and it can be set to 3 different lengths) What do you guys recommend? I'm not trying this till I get everybodys advice! :animal36 |
I've never been able to keep the hair long using clippers. I make mistakes and I end up cutting it shorter and shorter. So if I want a puppy cut I use the clippers, if I want it left a little longer I use scissors. I've never found it to be that difficult. I make sure to play with Gus first so he is more likely to stay still. Remember it will grow back. :) |
1 Attachment(s) I trim Olivia's hair myself with scissors, but I do keep her hair almost floor length, so I have no clue how clippers would work on a little one like a yorkie. Scissors work good for me, I cut with them across using my fingers as a guide (like you'd trim up your bangs.) I make a center part down her back before cutting, even though the part magically goes away as soon as we're done. I only cut when she's sleepy, and I wont touch her head or face for love or money. You ask about clippers too. I just cut my mom's mini schnauzer's hair for the first time. I used clippers with the longest guard setting, but I had to cut the longer hair down a little shorter before I buzzed it. Go SLOW and be veeery patient But the golden advice is this: do it OUTSIDE if it all possible, and do not attempt to do it alone. and GOOD LUCK :D I don't know how short you want "short" to be, but here's a pic I made Miss Livvy wake up for so you can see my handiwork. clippers are only really good if you want youre pups hair short in length...... in the past i have done this (i have not cut his hair for MONTHS now and it is getting long) i havent tried it yet except for some places on his head last time, but i comb out the hair a little bit (the hair is held in the comb) and just cut over the comb..... this is the only way i can thing to get longer than 1.5 inch hair with clippers. .... otherwise i use scissors |
This is NOT something I would advise everyone to do but I use a dematting comb on Chanel all the time - it gets ALL the fuzz and dead hair out ...she has very thick hair and after I comb her out with this type of comb her hair lays much flatter - |

How do I know if Harleys hair is a 'cotton' coat? When he wears clothes, usually he has the 'mats' of white fuz on his chest and they are sooo difficult to sort out. Yesterday I just wanted to cut the burrs out of his hair rather than pick and comb them out bc they were hurting him and me. BTW I want his hair SHORT.. Like a puppy cut on the face but the rest needs to go! lol He's always a mess no matter how much I groom him. He loves to be this way I think but as soon as he's covered in burrs or mud he just limps around (he had an exceptionally sharp burr trapped right in the middle of his pads on his front left foot) and follows me until I groom him. Which makes NO sense bc he struggles to get away while I'm doing it most of the time! I think I'm going to have to experiment with the scissors, clippers, buzzer and see what works the best. And if in the end he still looks TERRIBLE I'll have to resort to searching out a great groomer or buy him some very BIG sweaters! lol |
Instead of cutting - try the DeMatting Comb ? They are only about 8 bucks - it will take out all that fuzz without cutting length |
I recently purchased an undercoat rake (i believe it's called) I didn't think it would work for Logan because he's not supposed to have an undercoat, but it really does. It pulls out all the dead hair and makes his coat like nice and flat. It's like a mini trim. |

Just a few days ago I also got fed up with Gracie's hair...she drags leaves in and she always matted....so i got brave and took some scissors and cut it myself....I used a fine tooth comb and went VERY slowly!!! I checked after each snip and made sure not to cut too much off initially!! Good luck! |

Mine is a little like your 2nd link - only it has curved NON sharp ends - it looks like a tiny rake and works great on Chanel - I never use it on Cheri ... I think it's only good if your yorkie has some fluff or fuzz and it will weed out that hair and leave the good hair - I use mine to thin Chanel cause she has LOTS of hair - but it's really for mats and tangles - Just be careful if you use one - I stay just above the skin and try to only touch hair....not her body - |
