advice about puppy sleeping Hi, I have had a yorkie puppy for about one month. I felt like we were making great progress related to sleeping because when he would cry or whimper (he is in a small kennel, next to my bed)..I would just put my finger in the grid in the front of the kennel and he would lick it and immediately settle down. For the last week and a half or so, he barks at 4:00 AM...I take him to his pad in the kitchen and he does his business..(both pee and poops)...Then I put him back in and he sleeps for about another hour and a half....I am getting very tired following his pattern of sleep....any suggestions about how to adjust what I am doing so I can get a good night's sleep would be very appreciated. barb in minneapolis |
It's funny how fast they can train us...I went through that with Belle when we got her. I had her in a kennel next to our bed and was getting up with her everytime she would cry. I talked to her breeder and she laughed that Belle was training me. She was 2 pounds so I was nervous about her being so little. She should be able to go almost 4 hours by then or shortly. I discovered that when I put a blanket over the kennel so she couldn't see anything she didn't fuss. When she did I knew she had to go. When I'd get her up I put her right on her pad, after she peed I'd give her just a finger full of food and right back to bed. I still to this day keep her kennel covered at night and she never makes a sound until she hears that I'm awake. Good luck, it's like having a new baby in the house.:) |
Maybe adjust his dinner by 2 hours later or so... maybe he'll sleep till 6. |
The older he gets the longer he will sleep. I know when I first got Poppy I was like a zombie I was so tired, and I was falling asleep at work and everything LOL! It will get better and it will be worth it. |
That sounds pretty good to me. When Callie was a puppy she was getting up 2 or 3 times a night. |
Yes the older her gets the longer he'll be able to go... If the puppy is actully using going #1 and #2 then that great and you can't blame him...it will get better :) but Izzy did the same thing but she was up at 3:30 ... and the times that I didnt hear her, she went in her cage and that is worth then getting up and taking her out..lol.. Good luck. it will get better :) |
They are so little that they can't hold it all night, when they are puppies. I used to get up around 3 am for potty breaks. They are like babies. It isn't long before they can sleep all night. |
Yes this is true. The older they get the longer they sleep. I went through that will all of our fur babies, and now we have Olver who is 8 weeks old. He gets up about 3 AM and at 5 AM. I'm looking forward to when he'll be sleeping all nght like the rest of them. |
Dink sleeps through the night now. He use to wake me around 2 or 3 am to go out. Hang in there. |
Sophie is 14 weeks and still gets up at night. However, now we let her sleep in her crate in her x-pen, which has her pad in it. She gets up once of twice in the night still to go the bathroom but then goes right back to bed. When we had her locked in the crate she would just whine when she would go back, although a blanket over the front helped a bit. But I was exhausted and unable to function in life! Now, during the week my husband brings her to our bed when he gets up for work or on the weekends she starts whimpering around 7:00 a.m. When she does that I just bring her to bed and she'll sleep several more hours with us. I know it's a bad habit to start, but it's worth it and there really isn't anything cuter than getting woken up by kisses :) I feel like it's gotten better but am a little anxious for times when we can't travel with her x-pen and she needs to just be in the crate. But, hopefully as she grows she'll be able to hold it longer. This morning she slept in the bed 5 hours with me, so I know she can hold it when she wants too :) |
