Please help me with advice Hey everyone, I really need some advice/perspective/help/something. I am not sure if I am having a bad night emotionally or if I am just tired or what is wrong. But tonight after dinner, I got Jackson and went to another another room to work on sit and come commands. Sit was not bad but come was horrible. He acted like it was horrible to come to me. :( Later I tried to love on him and he went the other way. I took them all out in the yard and he came over. I picked him up and he let me love on him. He even laid his head over on my shoulder. We came back in the house and he went and sat with my DH. Now he is sitting by me. He even nudged my hand to pet him a couple of times. I had a rough night with my skin kids and then this. I started feeling like I was the worse mom ever to both. Most of the time now Jackson greets me in the morning and wants me to pick him up. He also will come and lay beside me sometimes even push up against me. Tonight was just so opposite it hurt. He has always been my timid boy but over the past 3 weeks he has really come out of his shell with me. If anyone has any thoughts, suggestions please speak up. I was almost in tears tonight because I could not figure out what I had done wrong to push him away. Sorry this is so wordy. Thank you for reading it all and trying to help. |
I wouldn't dwell on why he's acting that way. He knows you love him, so just give him attention every now and then and wait till it all passes before starting up on the training. He could be a little rattled over your having to deal with the kids. ;) |
Maybe Jackson is sensing negative energy from you because you are having a rough time and he is fearful. Relax, get a good night of sleep and start fresh in the morning. |

Thank you. I am going to go to bed and pray that tomorrow will be a better day. |
I agree with Maximo - he is probably sensing some negative energy. Relax and get some rest. Don't take it to heart - Jack does that with me sometimes too. |

I am sure Jackson heard her cry and me get onto my oldest for getting into the shampoo. It is just hard when they cant actually talk and tell you what is wrong. I am still learning his "sign language". But I will wait and see how things are tomorrow. He is normally the more sensitive one of my bunch so you are all probably right and it was just the events of the night. Thank you for helping me look at this with some unbiased eyes. |
You and Jackson are going to be fine. One more idea: a really tasty treat always helps reassure my boys. |
Belle does that with me sometimes. Usually she is a momma girl who wants to be picked up and cuddled with. Other times she goes by my dh and acts like I did something terrible and it makes me feel bad like I did something wrong. I have a lot of medical issues and depression and I think she senses that and thinks I need time alone. If I'm really sad she comes and cuddles under my neck. I think they are more into our feelings than we are sometimes. I gaurantee he isn't punishing you for anything, they love us unconditionally. |
I don't know why Jackson was moody. I would try to keep some tiny pieces of white meat chicken on hand and use those for training. I doubt he will be moody if he thinks meat is involved. Other than that, I don't have any tips :( |
A lot of times when I work on a new trick with Snickers he will not completely get it that night. Then, the next day we'll wake up and try it again and he gets it right away! It's like he sleeps on it and then it clicks! I'm sorry that you had such a rough time. How frustrating. I bet your dog is picking up on your negative feelings too. Also, I think that very short, multiple training sessions are better than long. So 5 minutes was probably perfect! If the dog is into it, keep going, but if not, I think it's OK to quit and try again later. |
Thank you everyone for your help and advice. I will definitely try the meat idea for trick treats. I like that one. I did not think it would so difficult with the kids and the puppies but every once in awhile it is horrible. Thankfully that is not the norm :D. If it was I would have a lovely soft walled room to live in. ;) |
Some yorkies are just more independent than others. I hope your day today is a good one. We all have off days.;) |
Everyone has bad days with dog, DH, kid, sister, etc. If everyone made a list of all the mistakes she made as a mom to skin kids or fur kids, the Forum would run out of space! Even though we are empty nesters, and I don't have the kids around to take care of, I still have days that Dinky is not easy for me. Don't be hard on yourself! You're a good mom taking care of her kids and working on training her dog. I'm sorry you had a hard day. I'll pray for you too! |
