Rope Toys I just like to let everyone know that those rope toys can be very dangerous. During Christmas our vet's wife let their english bulldog outside to go potty. She went outside fifteen minutes later to find their dog dead. Our vet said he swallowed the rope toy with the knots on the end. He could not get it out and choked to death. I don't have any of these toys for our yorkie but I guess some of these toys have to have some supervision with them. Who would of thought this could happen? Maybe it was a freak accident but I thought I would let others know. Some of these bigger dogs like to gulp down things like a ball etc. Hope this helps others. |

I advise ALL toys be used with supervision. I just spent the morning in the vet's office having an exam and x-ray;s done to make sure one of my girls did not have part of a rope toy lodged somewhere in her GI tract.:( Cooper somehow got the rope unknotted and ate part of the toy. She vommited a huge chunk up later along with all her undigested food. Later in the evening, she was gagging and choking on more of the rope trying to come up. I hope everyone reads these stories and remember to always supervise pups with they have any toy no matter how safe you think it might be. |
And even if the rope toy is too large for a small dog to swallow, it's still very, very dangerous. My tiny Chihuahua had her eye put out when one of my fosters was shaking a rope toy very hard and clipped her in the eye. Never take those chances! |
I am glad you posted this. I had a scare with a rope toy as well- it was shredded by Armani and swallowed- it did eventually pass on its own but it was terrible- I never allow rope toys in my home anymore. |
I think ours have about 2 or 3 of these toys in their toy box. They are going in the trash right now!!!!!!! |
I also caution people about hide type toys... like ones that you put several little toys in... I bought Harley a toy for christmas that is a burrow and it has three holes, and the dog is supposed to pull three chipmunks out of it. Well I gave it to Harley and all of a sudden I see him running around with the burrow on his head. (which I admit was kinda funny), but I learned that this toy is also for supervision only. I'm thankful he got stuck in it while I was around... |
How scarey. Rope toys are Bullet's favorite, but now they're all going in the trash. |
Seriously, I was just playing fetch with 1 while reading YT. As soon as I finish this post I will throw all of them away. I always liked them because we would play tug-o-war and then she would get 10 minutes of exercise running back and forth while I was on here. Thankyou for this wake up call! Ivy |

I threw Teegy's away because he shredded the rope and passed it and it was very hard for him to get it out. I had to help very gently and carefully |
How scary! We will be throwing out our rope toy tonight... |
I threw mine away also! Good thing it wasn't a favorite around here. Sad thing is, these are very popular and cheap(usually $1-$3). I hope everyone stays safe playing with these toys! |
