Is he too big? Hello fellow Yorkie owners! Yesterday a co-worker of mine came to work in an ill mood and once asked what was bothering her she said that someone left this little dog on her porch step. Well me looking for cute little pup for my family decided I would take him. We've taken him to the vet and the vet continues to say that he is a Yorkie. But I'm not sure if I should believe him or not. Harley (as we have decided to name him says my two-year old daughter) looks to be around 1 1/2- 2 years old. Here's where it gets confusing. Harley is close to 17 pounds. I've never owned a Yorkie before. I know he has some Yorkie in him jsut by the way he looks, but he's way bigger than any yorkie I have ever seen in my lifetime. And he has a much larger tail than I've ever seen. Is this perhaps a different breed of Yorkie than I've seen or could he be mixed? Please help... |
Can you post a picture? Some yorkies are a lot bigger than others (more to love); but it's hard to say without seeing him. Either way, I'm sure he's adorable. My first dog was a maltese and he was about 12/13 lbs - which is waay bigger than most maltese; I later learned. Still, he was a great size - not too big and still, anything under 20 lbs, is pretty darn small. |

I have one that is 15 lbs. He's tall, really long, and slender. It's possible he could be pure yorkie or a mix, but do you have a picture to post? |
1 Attachment(s) Currently this is the only picture I have of him. He's really hard to get to sit still as he is still getting used to us. He looks like a yorkie except for his size and his tail is probably proportionate with his weight and height even tho it is quite long. Whether he pure yorkie or not it doesn't matter. He decided to sleep with my husband and I last night right between us so he stayed pretty warm. Whoever had him before dropping him off took good care of him. Besides needing a bath when we first got him and some dry skin issues, he is in perfect health. Right now his ears need a little trim and I'm trying to find the perfect groom to take him to. He's already house trained and obey's basic commands. We got really lucky with this one. He doesn't even get on the furniture unless you ask him to. |
Does he just have an undocked tail? Very common for them (out of standard pups) to have full tail, both my standard yorkie Rizzo and the rescue Cooper, who is far from the standard, have their full tails. Though I live in Europe and it's less common to have a dog with an undocked tail unless you are in the show ring. Cooper the bigger guy has a pretty meaty tail where Rizzo's is small, but then again Rizzo averages between 5 and 6 pounds where Cooper is about 16lbs. |

I'm assuming that could be the deal. His tail isn't ungodly long and as I've said I'm sure its proportionate to his body length and weight. Is Cooper the shaved one? If so he's adorable. Harley needs a trim around his ears and tail. |
Cooper is the shaved one, picked him up about 3 weeks ago and did the shave myself, his ears were horribly matted and so was his tail. He hates the whole brushing process but I'm getting him used to it so he can have at least a puppy cut. Harley is adorable btw :) |
Harley is the same way. He HATES being brushed. He's just got these few strands that hang down from his ears and tail. I'm afraid to do it myself, one being as our clippers scare the crap out of the horses and I don't want to freak Harley out. Our local vet doesn't do small animals. One giant half horse dogs, horses and cows.. Of course, I do live in the middle of no where. |
There are so many nice clippers these days. Some are cordless and make little noise. |
He definitely looks like he is mixed. As for the clipping. Get a quiet one. Then introduce it to him gradually. first just lay it down and let him smell it, pick it up and slowly move it over his body, touching all areas with it. Repeat this from time to time until he is comfortable with it. Then later just turn it on and let him listen to it. Turn it on away from him and gradually move closer. When he is comfortable with that, gently touch his body with the opposite end from the clippers getting him used to the vibration. Rebeat this several times. when you think he is ready clip small areas at a time. This could take up to a week or more so just be patient. |
