Don't forget that the site is trying to sell you something (their book). Researching a topic is always good, but I'm put off by anything claims they are the ONLY way of doing something.

Good point - but it's also true information!

There's a handful of companies out there who make pet food who do not follow these disgusting practices at ALL. I don't think it's fair to claim you cannot feed ANY dog food because a few companies choose to use nasty things in their food. Human food can also be prepared in disgusting ways too. I feel very confident in the kibble I feed Jackson and I do not believe I am poisoning him in any way.

You are very right Brit. I am so put off by the thought of by-products and pesticides and foreign objects that I feel more comfortable seeing exactly what is in her food!

I also tend to eat one ingredient foods for myself (or combine them in my own home so I know what I am eating as best possible!)

I don't feel comfortable with kibble any longer. The companies have lost my trust. Sugar only eats 1/4 cup of food a day.....it isn't that much of a hardship for me to homecook and I feel good about that decision for me. I'm not telling everyone else not to use it if you are comfortable. I am not!

There are no dead dogs and cats in dog food in the US. There are extremely questionable meat products used though. The same goes for human food.

If a company says they make human grade food, that means nothing at all. They need to use specific terminology that is actually defined by law. They ened to be willing to tell you that it is "fit for human consumption." If they won't say that, then I'd question it. Humans still can't eat it though b/c it isn't processed in human food factories.

While I do agree that homecooked food is a great choice if done correctly, my next dog will eat 90% dog food. I'm tired of it after only a few years. It can be time consuming and it's harder to travel. It's more work for people watching your pup and it can get expensive. It isn't easy to get just right and health problems can occur. I'm happy I can do it for Ellie, but after this, that's it unless a medical problem requires it.

And IMO the new holistic companies have some work to do in proving that their products are actually better than older ones. There is a lot hidden there too...

ETA: Most of the food out of the grocery store isn't all that "safe" either. :(

That's the problem with research ;) Now, I can't feel comfortable feeding my girls any kind of dog-prepared item after reading about exactly what the terms on the bag could mean versus what you think they mean. Terrible.

My girls are on Honest Kitchen and Raw mixture diet for the last few months or so.

I have seen an interview done with some of the big wigs from dog food companies admitting that they use meat from dead, diseased, or dying animals in pet food, including foods sold in the US.

Do you remember where you saw that interview?

I don't but I really wish I did. Let me look around a little bit and see if I maybe saved it.

Ammonia is injected in a lot of meat for humans to kill e. coli. Animals are processed so fast that it is almost impossible to inspect them. Diseased animals get into the human food supply all the time. A ton of our food is genetically modified. The only way around it is to buy local and hope the farmers are trustworthy.

I would never feed my dogs any kind of commercial kibble. I agree that these companies have just lost consumer trust. Also, my way of thinking is that dogs have been eating "human scraps" for years - that's how we ended up with dogs! So clearly they have evolved to eat basically what we do. The only "dog food" I will feed my guys is the raw medallions by companies like Stella & Chewy's, Primal, and Nature's Variety. I also cook a lot for them at home with tons of success.
