help with introducing new pee pad tray Happy new year everyone, I posted this in the training section but there's more traffic here and hoping for some help.... Duke likes to lift his leg when he pees so I have had to use cardboard/boxes to make a box around this pad so that the actual wall/floor doesn't get wet. However, I found this recently and thought it would be a great idea. Wee Wee On Target Trainer I bought it, put one of his pads (with a bit of his pee on it already) on the tray and he won't go near it. This morning, he had to go really bad, but just stepped on it, sniffed and stepped off. I praised him everytime he goes near it and on it but not sure what else to do. I'm at work now so will see how he does when I get home and more training tonite. Any ideas/suggestions are appreciated. Thanks, |
Pistol is a lifter also. I use a gator aide bottle filled with water. I wrap a piece of pee pad around the bottle and tape it on, I sit it on his pee pad in the center, but more towards the back. This works for us. It may not work for everyone, but Pistol took to it right away. |
thanks for the response, i might have to try that if this tray doesn't work. |
I could not open the link so not sure what you pad tray is like but can tell you my experience with a regular pee pad tray. None of mine would use it. Craziest thing I ever saw. They would look at it and whine! I would cave and give them a plain pad, and they would go right away. They would also go right next to the pad tray :( I have finally given up. I get the disposable pads from RDB911 and they do not leak like the ones I was getting at Walmart. Good luck! I am going to follow your thread to see if you win the battle and if I can get some pointers. :) |
We use the disposable ones from Petco or wherever they are cheap. When we started I would take Mia (sorry I know girls are different) in the potty with me, close the door and put her on the pad as I went and before I realized it she was trained to go. We use them in the ladies restroom here at the office. SO when one of us ladies we go we took her with and she became familiar with them. We see her go into the potty alone and go now. I didn't like the scent they say to spray. It was worse than a dirty litter box. Mia also likes the puppy litter trays. |
Here's the update so far... Duke has been trained on the pad, I just added the tray with 3 panels for the sides which requires him to step onto the tray and uses the pad like he usually does. He went on it once last night while I sat next to the pad and once again this morning, otherwise he chose to go only if the pad is on the floor like how it has always been. He stepped onto the tray ok if I have a treat and lead him to it. I think he'll need more time to get use to the idea of going on there. Day 2 of the training here we go... |
Jamie never got used to the pee pad tray. She had been trained on the one that is like a frame and she never adjusted to the tray one so I went back to the frame one. |
After 5 days, Duke has been doing very well on this new tray w/ walls. Thanks everyone for your advice. Our babies are definitely smart, they learn very quickly :) |
