Ear Infections question So maybe this should be in the health section, but anyway... Harley just got over an ear infection, most likely I got some water in his ear when bathing... so I've recently learned about dog ears... well my aunt (the owner of a rescue boarder collie) tells me that her dog constantly gets them... and well I was just introduced to that ear cleaning solution that you get at the vets that has a drying agent in it, and was told from now on when I bathe him to just dump some of this cleaner in his ears to assure it properly dries out. She tells me that Blackie hates the cleaner and that she washes his ears with a cloth and soap and water.... I'm sorry maybe I'm not educated enough, but doesn't water cause ear infections... I'm trying to convince her to use the darn cleaner whether her dog likes it or not... to me something designed for dogs would be a better prevention for ear infections than a cloth soap and water... what about the stuff that drips down the ear? Thoughts? |
I think it all depends on what kind of ear infection her pup is getting. I never put water into my pups ears. Here is a link that might help: Treating Ear Problems in Dogs, Cats, and Other Pets |
My understanding is that water should be kept away from the ear canal. Moisture creates a breeding ground for yeast and other infectious growths. However, lately I have been wondering about dogs who swim. Doesn't water get in their ears? |

After bathing my dogs, I always use a good drying agent. |

Moisture does create a breding ground for yeast/bacteria, etc. However, adding to the equation is hair in the ear canal, retaining the moisture. |

But yeah, it seems to me that proper ear cleaning with the solution would be a good place to start. |
Bailey has floppy ears and used to get ear infections often. I started out using the solution the vet gave with each bath he got but as the ear infections decreased I stopped using it as often. Now I use it about once every 3 baths or when his ears start to itch... |

Lexie got a mild yeast infection in her ears when some water got in them. The vet gave me some drops "Surolan" to put in her ears for 2 weeks. Its so hard to get them in she wont stay still at all and puts up the biggest fight:( , i cant wait until it clears up it's such a battle |

As for her, perhaps you can show her that website? Maybe seeing it in black and white might help. |

Of course with some age came some wisdom and I learned why it worked.:p |
I had a foster once that had ear infections constantly and the Vet. said it was a food allergy. Don't know about that, but it's a good idea to keep the hair plucked out of the inside of the ear canal so moisture doesn't linger there. Yeast infection is common from not keeping the inside ear dry. |
